Andrew Wiggins Dunks on Cole Aldrich, Puts on a Show

This dunk on Wednesday is why Andrew Wiggins will be the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, and why Cole Aldrich went No. 11 in 2010.

“He’s the best athlete that we have ever been around,” one person close to the Kansas staff told SNY.tv after Wiggins made his debut at Kansas practice Monday.

After choosing Kansas in May over Kentucky, Florida State and North Carolina, the 6-foot-7 Wiggins arrived at Kansas Saturday. He played in his first practice Monday and obviously helped attracted a crowd to Wednesday’s Blue/Red scrimmage.

“It’s been a great vibe since I’ve been here,” Wiggins told reporters, according to RockChalkBlog.com. “All the people of Lawrence have shown me nothing but love. I’ve been following the other players, seeing where to go, seeing how Lawrence is. It’s been great so far. Everyone is loving, friendly. It’s great getting to know people. I’ve been pretty comfortable here.”

Wiggins opted to come to Kansas in June as opposed to playing with the Canadian U19 team at the FIBA World Championship, which begins next week in Prague.

““I know college is a big step from high school, so I just wanted to make sure I was ready for it,” he said. “Coming here early would (make) higher my chances of being ready for college.”

Good job--as usual-- Bent.

I was at game and was , again, disappointed in the lack of physicality by the Jets to start the Game-- this is one BIG Team and they did "pick it up" ( particularly after the safety) on both sides of the ball.

Good assessment on B.Winters--he is a teaser.BTW Falcon fans are going to have one very long year.

Bent, overall what did you think of Fitz's ball placement? I thought it was decent when it went getting knocked down.

@williamg1

Well, there were so many short passes.  The timing on those hitch patterns was good, I guess.

@williamg1 I foresee a lot of interceptions, he's predictable, he won't go deep often and a lot of his passes will be dump offs or throws underneath, and there isn't a lot of velocity on his throws, we will see Petty start late in the season, probably week 11. Matt Flynn will get cut as soon as Geno gets healthy and Geno will assume the backup role as he is done, will be waived after this season.

@Pablo Bruno I think the amount of INTs Fitz throws will depend a lot upon how often the team is playing from behind.

This offense has enough weapons that it could be pretty good as long as they aren't forced into being 1 dimensional in order to score a lot of points in a short amount of time.

I know we haven't gotten Bents' take yet but I was really disappointed with Dexter McDougle last night.

He got burned pretty consistently by ATlantas' 2nd and third stringers...

Meh, it's pre-season. Hard to get too excited. Glad to see Leonard Williams is feeling more comfortable--I expect big things from him. Glad to see Bryce Petty getting his feet wet in a good way--he may just have a future.

Is it possible Enunwa is getting so many reps because he's essentially playing the role Amaro would have if he wasn't injured? It is preseason after all and they're installing a new system with a new OC, etc. Enunwa could actually be filling in as the starting H back and not really competing with Kerley as a slot receiver. Once Smith and Amaro are back and healthy, the pecking order and roles might look different. Maybe they're just getting the QB confortable with certain types of plays and formations in the new offence.

@jvsvn

I'd rather see Wes Saxton getting some reps doing that...

Haven't we been told they prefer a bigger player in the slot? Whether that's Enunwa, Amaro or somebody else, I don't know. But I'm not so sure I'd just assume that Kerley will resume that role week one.

@jvsvn

Good theory but I would say no.

He's not an H-Back based on personnel groupings, he's occasionally (but not the majority of the time) being motioned into that role, but primarily playing in the slot.

Gailey often does that with his bigger receivers.

Now, does this make Amaro potentially less important to the offense?  Yes, it could do.

@juunit I'm not assuming anything. I'm just saying that the narrative of "Eunwa vs. Kerley for the 3rd WR spot" might not be an accurate depiction of what's really going on.

juunit
juunit

Like Bent said below, I think the more accurate narrative would be Enunwa vs. Amaro as opposed to vs. Kerley.

Although Amaro has a good 40 pounds on Enunwa, so he should be able to win that pretty handily...

jvsvn
jvsvn

@Bent @jvsvn My basic point was that maybe when Amaro comes back he makes Enunwa less important to the offense and Kerley's status really has nothing to do with it.

hitchhiker
hitchhiker

@jvsn considering Amaro has been practicing with the 3rd stringers for all of TC & played with them last week, maybe Enunwa is making Amaro less important to the offense.

jvsvn
jvsvn

@hitchhiker I basically agree with that but we've got to talk about something on this board. I'm just throwing spaghetti at the wall. I also don't know if everything the we "see" in training camp is so literal. The Aboushi demotion had elements that we weren't discussing. The same might be true with the Amaro situation. Maybe they don't want anyone to see the formations that Amaro will be lined up in. I'm just saying ...

@jvsvn @hitchhiker

Occam's Razor would suggest that Amaro and Aboushi just aren't as good as we have thought they were.

a57se

@hitchhiker

I think Amaro has made himself less important to the offense.

jvsvn

@a57se @jvsvn @hitchhiker Occam's razor involves situations where you attempt to come to a logical conclusion about something by reducing the number of variables that have to be accounted for. Designing schemes for offense or defense in the NFL often involves subverting the logical conclusions that might be drawn by adding to the number of variables that need to be accounted for.

hitchhiker

@a57se I've never been overly impressed with either Amaro or Aboushi.

Amaro is a big guy that hasn't put the time & effort into the weight room to stay healthy, never mind become a decent blocker (which shouldn't be a problem for a guy 6'5" 270 lbs). So he's a receiving TE that drops a lot of passes. To make matters worse, he runs his mouth even though he has no notable NFL accomplishments to speak of.

Aboushi just isn't big enough, strong enough, or athletic enough to be a legit NFL OG.

@hitchhiker

Yeah, I think bith have been over rated here by some...

Pretty interesting how they used Enunwa, almost like an H-back. And obviously as first string. Although again I didn't see the QBs actually look his way too many times and there were cases when he was open.

That throw to him in the endzone was really frustrating. He was open while running the entirety of his route and then Petty threw it to him late, right as he got near a bunch of defenders.

Oh well, it at least looks like he's making the team so he should get his chances to prove himself at some point.

a57se

@juunit

You should be used to late passes after watching Geno the last couple years!

juunit
juunit

And Sanchez and just about all our QBs. It was just annoying cause I saw him right away and that whole side of the field had been successfully cleared out so I was like "ooh ooh he's open... Aaaaaand now it's a pass defensed."

a57se

@juunit

Bright spot? It was Petty's first time doing it and maybe he learned something?

I guess we'll find out eventually.

@juunit

What did yu think overall of his performance?

Tooned In

@juunit I liked what I saw from Petty. He almost threw a few picks but it looked like he read through some progressions and is generating an idea on how to play his position in the NFL. Way too early to canonize him  but it is definitely a good step in the right direction.

juunit
juunit

He looked like he did in college. He made some good looking throws, but his accuracy was inconsistent. And success in the NFL is about consistency, not the occasional pretty throw.

 NO MORE POLITICS IN MY BGA THREAD PLEASE.

You have been warned.

PS - Bradysucks don't do what you always do in this situation and make some inflammatory parting shot about politics which is obviously going to lead to more political discussion.

Thanks everyone.

How about we keep Kerley and trade Geno for IK

IK made it possible for Bryce Petty to shine. Bring back IK & ditch Geno

hanknaples

@bradysucks

Nahh....the Jets will wait to see if he makes the Pro Bowl then give away the store for him !!

bradysucks

Ha ha

IK could be to the Jets what Mo Lewis was to the Patriots

We all know Mo Lewis knocked out Drew Bledsoe clearing the way for Tom Brady.

IK could yet become a hero to Jets fans if Petty develops into a star

hitchhiker

I'm not sure I like the idea of trading Kerley, but the team has a serious need for starter quality players at TE & S.

Tooned In

@hitchhiker  Kerley and Pryor for Chancellor. Kam is holding out and states he may sit out the season unless he gets a new contract.

jaym

Thank you Bent seems the media only cares if the Jets won the game or not. I was very disappointed with the defense against the starters, and the offense did not look any better. We will see if the defense gets better when Mo comes back but they have been getting shredded by the first team QB's so far.

I think the NFL is force feeding this woman ref to make themselves look good, she is not ready to officiate an NFL game a lot of very bad calls by her concerning the CB play, putting your hand on a receiver does not warrant a flag. I do hope she will get better because I didn't like what I saw yesterday.

@Bent There was about 90 seconds of joy, otherwise it was awful. Without Eriksen the team can't do much of anything.

Dele Alli looked pretty good though, he should be a top reserve going forward.
