Alabama, Rutgers Among Those Targeting Jon Severe

The recruiting process is heating up for Christ the King senior shooting guard Jon Severe.

Alabama, Rutgers, Duquesne and St. Bonaventure are working the hardest for the 6-foot-1 Severe, who is averaging 22.7 points and was recently nominated for the McDonald’s All-American Game, head coach Joe Arbitello told SNY.tv.

Alabama head coach Anthony Grant and assistant John Brannen saw Severe go for 14 points and seven assists Sunday in a 71-51 win over Xaverian.

“They like him,” Arbitello said. “Jon didn’t have his best scoring game, but he did a lot of other things. They said that he’s somebody that they need, a guy that can get his shots a bunch of different ways.

“They said, ‘We love him and we want him. We want him to come visit right after the season, and take his last visit to Alabama.'”

Rutgers head coach Mike Rice saw the epic Christ the King-Bishop Loughlin game Friday night in which Severe had 18 points in a 73-72 win. (Video highlights here.)

“Mike Rice spoke to me after the game and said they want him in the worst way,” Arbitello said. “They would do whatever it takes to get him.”

Rutgers just landed former St. Raymond’s of The Bronx point guard Shane Rector of South Kent (Conn.) and is now looking to add a second New York City guard in the Class of 2013 to back up guards Myles Mack, Eli Carter and Jerome Seagears.

Duquesne coach Jim Ferry, the former LIU coach, and a George Washington assistant were also on hand Sunday.

They have offered, as has St. Bonaventure, Arbitello said.

Fordham coach Tom Pecora was there Sunday, but Arbitello said he wasn’t sure if it was for Severe.

On top of all that, Florida State assistant Dennis Gates saw the Loughlin game, which also featured 6-3 Khadeen Carrington, being recruited by St. John’s, UConn and others.

“I think he can step in to Duquesne and GW and help them immediately,” Arbitello said of Severe. “They told me he could step in right away and play, probably start as a freshman.

“I think at Alabama it may take a year or two.”

As for a timetable, on a decision, Arbitello said, “I think he’s going to decide after the season.”

Time for Idzik to pick up some CB's.  I hope he doesn't wait for these guys to get healthy.  I was really looking forward to watching McDougle blossom.  I'll have to wait a year.

So our QB's are getting picked off by our secondary that is decimated by injury...

That is a scary thought.

How come our Defense looks so good against our offense but not so good against other passing attacks?

And other team's defense wasn't able to pick off our QBs on Thursday.

Can we stop extrapolating practice plays?

@a57se And thank you for turning this into a big negative. Can always count on you.

@harold Obligatory "it was on Hill, though" comment.

Obligatory "it was underthrown" comment.

@Brendan If Allen were to actually become a decent CB...WOW!  He's real big and rangy and hits like a freight train.

@Mike Milea @a57se

Well Indy moved the ball pretty effectively in the first half last Thursday.

Last year, the secondary was constantly torched and was the weak part of the defense.

Did you miss all that?

@Brendan @a57se

Yeah, lets' stick our heads in the sand and act like our Defense is the best in the league and our offense is a top 15 unit. That is so much more fun.

@Brendan

No acknowledgement that almost all pick are on average or below average plays.

As they always say there is no defense for the perfect pass.

(I'm going to be so, so sad when this doesn't happen)

@a57se I love that you, someone who laughs at the idea that preseason means anything, suddenly thinks the defense bending (not breaking) in the first preseason game is a damning omen for the season. Good stuff outta you.

@a57se @Mike Milea I saw Dmitri Patterson get beat on a deep ball, one on one with Hakeem Nicks. That happens just about every single game since Rex has been here. Its the downside of Rex's D, sometimes you leave your guys one on one, they're going to get beat. Did you miss that at all?

And don't start talking about last year man, it has no relevance to the present. If you're going to start worrying about how we played last year we should start bringing up everyone's faults from all the years before that too.

@a57se " Defense is the best in the league and our offense is a top 15 unit."

Show me where I said this.

@harold I was just kidding. I was doing it before someone like BS did it, that's all.

I'm very intrigued by this "AA at CB" experiment they're trying.

Brendan
Brendan

@Disgruntled Jets Fan This is true, but Allen's best skill in coverage is his press coverage. Maybe Rex is really just testing him out to see if he can beat up safeties on the outside and use his size to dictate the play out there.

It's an interesting idea, and TC is the time to work on it if you're forced to go with Plans B and beyond.

@a57se And tell me, 57, how well is the Twitter tab equipped to host discussion?

Oh, right, it sucks for discussing live tweets, so we post them here so they don't get flushed down the twitter feed and get lost in minutes.

The fact that posting them annoys you will probably only spur more people to do it.

@Brendan @harold AA at corner means that we've got a spot open for another safety.

@a57se No, please note the use of the word "relevant" in my first response.

Posting every negative article you can get your hands on and posting Cimini garbage isn't really relevant.

@Brendan @a57se

Joey posts stuff about Football and the Jets...this is a Jets Blog.

That makes it relevant. you just don't like when he posts Cimini quotes...

You are full of it as usual.
