SWaniganIt’s been quite a July for Caleb Swanigan.

He was named to the ZAGSBLOG All-Peach Jam First Team after leading the event in rebounding.

He picked up a Kentucky offer.

And now the 6-foot-8 forward from Fort Wayne (IN) Homestead has made the first cut for the USA U17 team.

If he makes the final cut to 12 this week, Swanigan will trave to Dubai to compete in the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship for Men on Aug. 8-16.

“This experience has been so much fun; it’s highly competitive,” Swanigan told USA Basketball. “You have to get out every day and get on every play; there are no days off. You’re not the main guy here, everyone is fighting for the same position; you just have to fight.

“The top guys in the country are here; everyone is in your age group and you’re all competing.”

As far as recruiting goes, Swanigan said it was an honor to get the Kentucky offer. The Wildcats now have offers out to more than 20 players in the Classes of 2015 and ’16.

“It’s definitely exciting just knowing the traditon they have of great players that are able to develop and go to the next level so it’s exciting,” he told SNY.tv of Kentucky.

Michigan State, Louisville, Arizona and Kansas are among those also involved, but Swanigan has no visits planned yet.

“I don’t know where I’m taking visits yet,” he said.

Wherever he lands, he says, “I’ll be the best player I can be. I’ll be a rebounder, and just play hard every night.”
