Canadian big man Chris Egi is headed to the Ivy League.
The 6-foot-8, 215-pound center from CIA Bounce and Montverde (FL) Academy committed to Harvard following his official visit this weekend.
Egi joins 6-5 Norcross (GA) shooting guard Andre Chatfield, who also committed to Harvard Sunday.
“I’m proud to say I will be attending Harvard University in the upcoming school year. God truly is good,” Egi Tweeted.
“It’s a great combination of basketball and school,” Egi told SNY.tv.
Egi also considered Vanderbilt, Cal, Washington and Stanford.
“Chris will bring Harvard an outstanding, hard-working skilled big man who is a true competitor and will do huge things at Harvard,” CIA Bounce coach Tony McIntyre told SNY.tv.
“He’s a tremendous shot-blocker and gritty competitor, not to mention a tremendous student. It’s possible he may be the top academic athlete there when it’s done.”
Egi will also reclassify to 2014 from 2015, just like fellow Canadian Andrew Wiggins and former Montverde big man Dakari Johnson did last season.
“Yes,” he said.
“I just want to be the hardest working guy in the gym everywhere go,” Egi previously told SNY.tv. “I’ll be a little bit versatile for a big man with my quickness and work really hard on defense and just wreak havoc on the defensive end.”
Chatfield also gives head coach Tommy Amaker another long shooter on the wing.
“Harvard gives me the best of both worlds,” Chatfield told Future150.com. “I feel like I will fit in with the team really well.”
He added: “The academic part is great. It’s a blessing just to have the opportunity to go to Harvard. I know that if basketball doesn’t work out, God forbid, I will graduate with a Harvard degree.”
