Derrick Jones, the 6-foot-7, 190-pound wing from Archbishop Carroll (Pa.), will fly to UConn Sunday after playing in the Adidas Nations event in Miami this weekend, his father told SNY.tv.
Jones will then take several other visits this spring and summer leading up to the fall when he will cut his list.
Jones is the No. 25 prospect in the Class of 2015 according to Rivals and may be the most athletic player in the class. He needs to continue developing his shot and his ability to create off the bounce, but has the tools to be special if his skills can catch up.
UConn is coming off winning the national championship and head coach Kevin Ollie has the magic touch right now when it comes to recruiting.
“They like him and everything,” Derrick Sr. told SNY.tv. “I’ll know more once I get there. I haven’t really sat down and had a good talk in a while.”
He added: “[Winning the NCAA title] is very impressive. They were the underdogs walking in there. For me, that’s a good fit. Just looking at their roster and who stays and who goes, it’s a good fit. But you see what’s a good fit for him.”
Syracuse assistant Gerry McNamara is recruiting Jones and has recently been in touch.
Derrick Sr. said they are “definitely going to Syracuse” on a visit.
“I just haven’t picked the dates yet,” he said. “It’s hard when I have to get time off work. But we’re definitely going to visit Syracuse.”
Derrick Sr. said he would also like his son “to get to Kentucky, Indiana and Iowa State” this spring and summer.
“We’re trying to get all this done this summer,” he said.
They plan to cut the list in a few months.
“We’re trying to get it down to at least five before the end of the summer,” Derrick Sr. said.
