Duke and Kentucky are now recruiting 6-foot-5 Canadian point guard Jamal Murray, who poured in 30 points on Saturday to help the World Team beat the U.S. in the Nike Hoop Summit championship.
“Duke and Kentucky are now recruiting [him],” Roger Murray, the player’s father, told SNY.tv by text.
We previously reported here that Kentucky was recruiting him, but Barry “Slice” Rohrssen, who visited Murray and teammate Thon Maker at Orangeville Prep in Ontario, has since moved on to St. John’s.
“Kentucky has been in contact before but has reached out more so after Saturday’s game.” Roger told ESPN’s Paul Biancardi.
Duke also reached out to Canadian head coach Roy Rana.
“The Duke staff left me a text message wanting to talk about Jamal,” Rana told Biancardi.
If Duke loses Tyus Jones to the NBA Draft, they will need a point guard for next year. The Blue Devils have already reached out to Derryck Thornton about declassing to 2015 and he is also considering Louisville if he does so.
Oregon, Michigan State, Illinois, Indiana and Missouri are among the schools also involved for Murray, who was recently inserted into the No. 18 spot in the 2016 NBA Draft by DraftExpress.com.
In order for that to happen, Murray would either need to stay in Canada and go directly to the NBA Draft from there in 2016 or to reclass to 2015, which he is considering doing and could still do later this summer after playing AAU ball with CIA Bounce.
Murray and Maker will play Tuesday night in the BioSteel all-Canadian Basketball Game at Ryerson University’s Mattamy Centre.
