NEWARK, N.J. —  In the highly anticipated match-up of the Newark Invitational, a crowd including Rutgers head coach Eddie Jordan was treated to a thrilling St. Benedict’s Prep 64-58 win over Roselle Catholic.

Jordan was on hand to see  Isaiah Briscoe take on a very talented Gray Bees squad with several Division 1 recruits.

The 6-foot-3 2015 guard is considering several schools, including Syracuse, Arizona, Louisville, Providence, Gonzaga, Seton Hall and St. John’s, but some believe Rutgers has the inside track at this point. Briscoe has attended several games at Rutgers this year and last year, and could be the face of the program after they join the Big Ten next year.

Briscoe led the way for Roselle Catholic with 22 points with 12 of them coming in the second half. His points did not come easy as he made several difficult shots in traffic due to the length of St. Benedict’s Prep. Late in the game with all the defensive focus on him and sophomore guard Asante Gist, Briscoe was able to drive and dish for big baskets by sophomore guard Matt Bullock and junior forward Chris Silva.

The scoring effort for St. Benedict’s Prep was a well-balanced effort with five players in double figures. Jon Williams was the MVP for the Gray Bees with 10 points. He was constantly initiating the offense and probing into the lane for easy assists to his teammates Eli Cain, Kamar McKnight, Arnaldo Toro and Trevor Duval.

While Roselle Catholic finished with a loss, they must be happy with how they bounced back after a rough performance against St. Anthony’s on Wednesday.
