James Young will announce his college choice Thursday on ESPNU, according to a Tweet from ESPN’s Paul Biancardi.
The 6-foot-6 Young is considering Kentucky, Kansas, Michigan State and Syracuse but has made no secret of his admiration for Kentucky and head coach John Calipari.
SNY.tv recently reported that Andrew and Aaron Harrison had reached out to Young and Julius Randle about joining them at Kentucky. The twins committed last week to become Kentucky’s first 2013 recruits.
Young recently visited Kentucky unofficially and may visit again Oct. 12 for Big Blue Madness.
“It was a great visit,” his Godfather, Sean Mahone, told SNY.tv. “We had an opportunity to visually validate and witness firsthand the quality of their program, the facilities, the basketball facilities, the academic facilities, the entire campus. It was first-hand, top-notch. We were very impressed with it.
“It’s very clear why the University of Kentucky continues to have the level of success that they’ve had for a long time.”
Mahone also told SNY.tv that Young could peacefully coexist with the Harrisons and other stars on the same team.
“You play with [Andrew] Wiggins, you play with the Harrison twins, you play with Julius Randle, I would envision an up-and-down game and an opportunity for people who pose a threat from the outside to be able to given that opportunity,” he said. “Simultaneously, if you have an opportunity to get to the bucket and create some things, I think it just presents a very interesting scenario, I really do.”
When I asked Wiggins at the Peach Jam how special a class like that could be, he said:
“Great class, I don’t think we can be stopped. Honestly if we get that class together, I think we’ll be tough to beat.”
Young also said he’s looking to be a one-and-done.
“I’m just looking for my best college, the one that’s going to get me one-and-done and give me the best opportunity to get out there,” he said.
