Jerron Wilbut to Seton Hall (UPDATED)

Jerron Wilbut, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound off guard from St. John’s Northwest Military (WI), verbally pledged to Seton Hall Thursday night after watching the team play at Marquette Wednesday.

Wilbut, 19, joins 5-6 point guard Aquille Carr in Seton Hall’s 2013 recruiting class.

“They’ve been recruiting me for a long time and from what I’ve seen they’re in need of a scorer,” he told SNY.tv.

“I can be coming in and that’s a good spot for me.”

A Chicago native who is spending a postgrad year at St. John’s, Wilbut said he also had offers from Alabama, UTEP and Green Bay.

St. John’s Military assistant Bryan Clayton, who also coached Seton Hall sophomore forward Brandon Mobley, told SNY.tv:

“He went to the game last night at Marquette [won by the Golden Eagles]. He saw an opportunity to play right away. They struggled to score. He felt a strong connection with [associate head coach] Shaheen [Holloway] and [assistant] Chris Pompey. He already visited. He’s been thinking about it. It just felt right.”

Asked what Seton Hall was getting, Clayton said Wilbut has scored 30+ points five or six times this year, including 35 against Hargrave Military.

“He’s a high-major two guard,” Clayton said. “There’s no question about it. He can get buckets anyway you want it, from deep, at the bucket, mid-range, jumper. He’s athletic.

“He’s wired to score, that’s what he does. He scores.”

Wilbut visited Seton Hall in October with teammate Jevon Thomas, who has since committed to Kansas State.

“It was fun,” Wilbut said.

Asked what Coach Kevin Willard told him, he added:

“He basically broke it down, they need somebody to create off the dribble, get to the lane, knock down shots.

“They were lacking that this year and that was one of the pieces they were missing in the puzzle.”

As for playing in the Big East (until the Catholic 7 leaves), he said: “I’m looking real forward to it.”
