Juwan Durham, a 6-foot-10, 200-pound power forward from Tampa (FL) Prep who is recovering from a right ACL tear, has committed to UConn for the Class of 2016.
Durham took an official visit to UConn this past weekend.
“This was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made but I’d like to announce that I will be committing to the University of Connecticut,” he said on Twitter.
Tampa Prep coach Joe Fenlon said Durham also held offers from Miami, Notre Dame, Maryland, Kansas, Villanova and Florida, and had a visit scheduled to Miami in two weeks. He took unofficials to Miami, Florida, Florida State, South Florida and Louisville.
Ranked No. 38 in the ESPN 100 for 2016, Durham averaged about 24 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocks last season.
“I think he’s going to be a stretch four,” Fenlon said. “He’s got a very diverse skill set. He’s a kid who can handle the ball, pass the ball, shoot the ball. He’s not going to be a back-to-the-basket guy, however he can score down there.
“He’s very athletic. He’s got incredible timing for a kid that size. In three years, I don’t think he’s fouled out of a game yet. He’s got uncanny timing to alter shots. The ones he doesn’t block, he alters.”
Durham tore his ACL at the end of February and continues to rehab now. He’s expected to play this season.
“He’s doing well,” Fenlon said. “He’s working hard. He’s in the gym every day, get 200-300 shots up every day. He has not been cleared to do any cutting or any of that stuff yet. He’s doing everything he’s allowed to do.”
Durham joins Lithonia (GA) point guard Alterique Gilbert and Woodstock Academy center Mamadou Diarra in UConn’s 2016 class.
Terry Larrier, a transfer from VCU, will sit out this season and have three years of eligibility beginning in 2016.
