Despite being down by 20 points, Kentucky-bound point guard Isaiah Briscoe and his Roselle Catholic teammates are headed to the Union County (N.J.) championship game on Saturday night.
Briscoe scored a season-high 34 points before fouling out of a 78-74 win over St. Mary’s of Elizabeth in the Union County semifinals on Wednesday night at Kean University. He remains 3 points shy of 2,000 for his career but can easily pass that threshold during Senior Night at Roselle on Thursday when RC hosts Union Catholic.
“Isaiah along with the rest of our guys really stepped up and made plays in the second half,” RC coach Dave Boff told SNY.tv. “He went and got us big buckets when we needed them. Every time it looked like they were going to put us away he was able to get a score and keep us within striking distance.”
Naz Reid, a 6-10 freshman who recently added an offer from Villanova and interest from Kentucky, added 15 points for Roselle Catholic.
On Saturday at 7:30, RC will face Linden in the Union County championship game. Linden knocked off reigning champion The Patrick School, 65-54, in the first semifinal.
Linden senior Joshua Carter scored 19 points and senior Otis Livingston added 18, according to Jerry Carino of The Asbury Park Press.
Roselle most recently lost in the Union County Tournament final to Plainfield in 2012.
“Saturday will only be the school’s third trip to the UCT Final so I expect us to come out with great energy as we try to secure the first county title in school history,” Boff said.
Briscoe is a McDonald’s All-American who is projected as the No. 14 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft by DraftExpress.com.
