ZAGSBLOG first reported Kone’s intentions to commit to Rutgers Aug. 16.
The 6-foot-6, 194-pound Kone was born in Guinea in West Africa and has only been in the United States for 19 months.
He will be a senior at St. George (Va.) Blue Ridge and plays for DC Assault.
“I committed to Rutgers because [associate head] Coach [David] Cox was recruiting me to Georgetown and he never gave up on me until today,” Kone said by text. “He trusted in my game. It’s a good program with a good education. Rutgers is a good place for me to show people that I’m good and bring my team to the top of the Big East as a leader.
“It’s not going to be easy but I like hard work and the coaches are good and passionate.”
Kone also had interest from Virginia, East Carolina, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Jacksonville and Marshall.
“He’s a jump shooter who can defend multiple positions and a very good rebounder,” DC Assault director Damon Handon said. “He’s a great kid.”
Kone joins 6-9 forward Derrick Randall of South Kent (Conn.) in Rutgers’ 2011 recruiting class.
Rutgers has five scholarships to give for 2011.
