  • Malik Newman Says He & Kentucky-Bound Briscoe Would Make Top Backcourt

After committing to Kentucky earlier this month on ESPNU, Isaiah Briscoe reached out to both Antonio Blakeney and Malik Newman, urging them to join him next year in Lexington.

Both players are still considering the Wildcats, and Newman apparently thinks he and Briscoe could form a dangerous backcourt.

“I think Isaiah and I could definitely make a good backcourt,” Newman told Hoopseen.com. “He’s a good player.”

Kentucky figures to have Briscoe and fellow 2015 signee Charles Matthews in the backcourt next season with Tyler Ulis –who excelled in Sunday’s 58-38 win over Providence — and Devin Booker.

Despite that group, Newman said he’s still in touch with Kentucky.

“I still talk to Kentucky the same before they had a commitment,” Newman told HoopSeen. “So, we will see. If that’s where I fit the best, that’s where I will go.”

The 6-foot-3 Briscoe wants to play with as many top players he can in order to succeed, and Roselle Catholic coach Dave Boff believes he won’t have a problem fitting in with a slew of other McDonald’s All-Americans.

“I think Isaiah will be a great fit with any type of guard he plays with at Kentucky,” Boff told SNY.tv. “He has a great understanding of how to play which I think let’s him mesh well with other high level players.”

As for Newman, he visited Kentucky for its Midnight Madness and called the chance to see Drake perform there “crazy.”

He is also considering Kansas, N.C. State and Mississippi State, among others, but won’t announce until after the NCAA deadline for entry into the NBA on April 15.
