Wherever Malik Newman goes to college, don’t expect him to stay long.
The 6-foot-4 Callaway (MS) guard says he wishes there were no one-and-done rule so he could jump straight to the NBA.
“I would like to skip college and go straight to the NBA,” Newman told Mississippi News Now in this video interview.
Newman is projected as the No. 5 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft by DraftExpress.com, but will have to spend at least a year on campus somewhere.
But where?
Newman recently cut Ohio State from his list and plans to take official visits to Kentucky, Kansas, Louisiana State and N.C. State.
“I haven’t decided where I’m going yet,” Newman said in the video.
Kentucky-bound point guard Isaiah Briscoe told SNY.tv on Friday that he is working on getting Newman to join him there.
“He’s coming to Kentucky,” Briscoe said. “It ain’t a done deal but I’m going to try to get him to come down to Kentucky with me.”
A source close to Briscoe previously told SNY.tv he believes Newman will ultimately land at Kentucky, which Mississippi News Now referred to as “a rumor on the Internet.”
“I don’t know where that came from,” Newman said.
Meantime, Ole Miss, where Newman’s high school coach David Sanders attended, appears to be in the mix, but Newman wouldn’t commit to staying local. His father, Horatio Webster, also played for Mississippi State.
“I would like to stay in state but if that’s not the best decision for me, then I wouldn’t do that,” he said.
Newman also said he could pull the trigger at the McDonald’s All-American Game set for April 1 in Chicago.
“I may do it at McDonald’s or I may not,” he said. “I haven’t set a date yet. As of right now I will be going into the McDonald’s Game undecided.”
