A Myles Turner/Emmanuel Mudiay package to SMU remains possible, but not necessarily likely.
After the 6-foot-5 Mudiay committed to SMU Saturday night at the Elite 24 game, the 6-11 Turner opted to reconsider the Texas school, according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN.com.
The two Texas players previously visited SMU together unofficially, but Turner then trimmed his list to eight schools — Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio State, Oklahoma State and Texas.
Prior to his announcement, Mudiay told SNY.tv last Thursday that the possible package was “not that serious but we’re just talking about it. We brought it up. It got bigger than what it was, people thinking we’re going to go together. But no, I’m going to let him make his own decision, and I’m going to make mine.”
In discussing the potential Tyus Jones/Jahlil Okafor package, Mudiay acknowledged that it’s difficult for two players to successfully pull off a package.
“I mean, it’s pretty tough for them to pick the same school,” Mudiay said. “But honestly you just gotta do what’s best for you sometimes. You gotta be selfish, you gotta do what you gotta do to be successful. But if that’s what they want to do, that’s what they want to do. I’m not worried about other people’s decisions. I’m just focused on myself.”
David Turner, Myles’ father, made similar comments to SNY.tv last month, indicating that Baylor, Kentucky and SMU were then possible landing spots for both Turner and Mudiay. Myles later cut SMU and Baylor.
“Myles and Emmanuel have talked about it,” David told SNY.tv.
“It’d be nice, those are two great players. It’s been talked about between the two of them. It’s something that they’re looking at it.
“But the bottom line is Myles is going to make the best decision for him academically and as far as his basketball is concerned. If that includes Emmanuel, that’s great. If not, we’ll keep moving on.”
