Charlotte Hornets draft pick P.J. Hairston allegedly punched a high schooler during a pickup basketball game at the Durham YMCA, according to the Associated Press.
“I want to apologize to the Hornets organization and our fans for creating this distraction,” Hairston said in a statement.
The Hornets issued a statement Sunday night saying they’re aware of the incident and “are in the process of gathering additional information.”
Hairston spent last season in the NBA Development League after being declared ineligible to play in the NCAA. He worked out for the Knicks, among other teams.
Hairston was charged with assault and battery on Monday, according to WTVD, and reportedly faces an August court date.
