Rodney Purvis Remains Wide Open

Rodney Purvis remains wide open after decommitting from Louisville, according to his AAU coach, Tony Edwards of the CP3 All-Stars.

“I don’t think anyone has an advantage right now,” Edwards said Thursday by phone. “They [the family] just want to see what can be established with someone.”

Louisville, Duke, N.C. State, Kentucky and Missouri all remain options, Edwards said.

“Right now no visits are scheduled,” he said. “He probably won’t do any visits for a while. He and his family are just focused on getting better. He has a few more weeks of school left and finals and everything coming up.

“He has a couple of courses this summer which is part of the reclassification into 2012. He has to take those. The basketball recruiting is the last thing on their list of things that are important as far as Rodney and his family.”

Purvis will attend the LeBron James Skills Academy in early July in Akron, Ohio.

Purvis and his family had established a strong relationship with former Louisville assistant Tim Fuller, but Fuller departed to join Frank Haith’s staff at Missouri.

More than anything, Edwards said, a staff must come in and build a relationship with Purvis and his close-knit family.

“They come from a small town, Roper, N.C.,” Edwards said. “There are no stop lights. It’s a very big family. They’re very touchy-feely, very close. They attend each other’s birthdays. In the recruiting process they were looking for someone they could relate to and trust. Tim Fuller did a great job establishing a relationship over a six-month period that led into the recruitment. The Louisville staff also developed a relationship with his mother.

“Once all of those guys left, to be fair to Louisville and themselves, they reopened the recruiting to allow Louisville’s new staff to see if they can establish this relationship.” Purvis and his family also have the opportunity to evaluate other options.

One of those options could be Missouri, where Fuller landed.

“I would say so because of the prior relationship,” Edwards said. “But once you get past the relationship and establishing that, there are other areas of interest to his family, the right fit for Rodney, playing style, the school, distance. They don’t mind him being far from home but it’s not going to be excessively far.”

That, of course, could help local schools Duke and N.C. State. Edwards said North Carolina never offered.

Duke commit Rasheed Sulaimon, a 6-3 shooting guard, has been busy recruiting Purvis to Duke.

Purvis played with John Wall on the D-One AAU team when he was in the 7th and 8th grade. Edwards said Purvis has the potential to be a similar kind of talent.

“I think he’s just scratching the surface of his basketball ability,” Edwards said. “I don’t like to compare him to anyone. He can be as good as Rodney Purvis wants to be.”

Wow.. The celtics are really tanking. Watching the encore now. Rondo is limping on the court, i think shouldn't be out there yet.

Just a word on all this Melo silly talk about Chicago and LA. When Melo was on the trading block last time, the Clippers turned down Melo for Blake and the Bulls refused to include Noah in any deal for him. The Nets would not include Brook Lopez either. If you think that these teams will now take Melo when his salary will be much higher are not learning from the past. Melo is staying in NY and Dolan will pay him.

Here is a 2011 article on Melo for Blake.

Funniest part of ‘Melo trade: Nuggets asked about Blake Griffin

Kurt Helin

Jan 11, 2011, 11:16 AM EST

Can’t blame a guy for trying, I guess.

Of all the crazy rumors flying around the Carmelo Anthony trade scenarios this one (from Marc Stein of ESPN) made me laugh out loud.

The Clippers’ Blake Griffin is one of Denver’s dream targets in an Anthony trade, but sources told ESPN.com that those overtures have been consistently rejected.

The Nuggets should call the Thunder and see if Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are available, too. Maybe the Bulls will part with Derrick Rose.

Even the Clippers are not going to trade Blake Griffin. He may well leave Los Angeles as a free agent in a few years after Donald Sterling finds a way to screw this one up, too, but the Clippers are not going to trade a franchise cornerstone and huge gate draw. There are only so many of those to go around, when you get one you hold on.

But it’s pretty funny. And I guess it never hurts to ask.

I hope Melo stays.  But I don't think it's a given.

Imagine Derrick Rose comes back and is as good as before.

And the Bulls make Carmelo a max offer this offseason (it's possible; for example they can dump boozer who will be on an expiring contract and easier to move).  Who thinks he would stay?

KnickelusKnickleby
KnickelusKnickleby

Melo will not turn down what the Knicks can offer him

he has to become a Free Agent to get that. then he can negotiate a lower price in order to pull in some firepower

if not he'll just retire a Knick with a big pay day

while Lala will bask in the glory of TV/Fashion

best believe Lala will have a show on MSG network sometime soon

Dolan owns "Cablevision" so Lala is set TV wise

it's definitely about Lala and Family + Money for Melo

Trophy sweetens the pot.

No news about shump yet?

i personally think Melo has something up his sleeve with another all-star coming to New York, his Poker face is showing he knows something that will make his decision to stay in NY much more lucrative

i think Lebron coming to NY while Miami destroy and rebuild

Wade will retire, Bosh will leave to Dallas

Lebron will definitely secure a Ring in NY with Melo

throw in Jameer Nelson and a solid Big and we may finally swim in orange and blue ticker tape.

New York Knick Pipe-Dreams!!

@lobcity I was at the game last night.  Couldn't really even figure out what Stevens was doing.  Green missed a couple of shots, so he was pulled after 5 minutes.  Bass played decently in the first qtr, didn't play a minute in the 2nd qtr. I guess tanking means losing by 50 if possible. I was watching Hump.  He is in the perfect situation.  No pressure, losing team, hes out there smiling having a good time.  Ultimate losing team player.

Lopez is injured prone (overrated) and NJ is playing better without him. I bet they would had made that trade if they knew.

VerySilentJay

@Knicks_Fanatic I find it hilarious that the idiot who wrote the articled had the testicular fortitude to place Griffin in the same sentence as Rose, Westbrook, and Durant.

Even back then Griffin was all about the hype.

Funniest thing though? Now the Clips are more than willing to pull the trigger on that trade.

@Knicks_Fanatic Great post.  However, times change. Back then, Blake was all they had.  Now though, they have a much better team and if they think they need offense, Melo would be in "play" for them.

Knicks_Fanatic

@orlando_knickfan

Gordon has been as injured plagued as Bargnani over the last few seasons. Keep the guy with shorter contract and hope to deal Bargnani as an expiring next year.

@johneco

Imagine Melo and Stat. exactly, Bulls situation is no different then the Knicks. We both have a max contract sitting on the bench. Why would Melo want to go in that situation after this situation. Rose came back and his shot was off. I'm not sure or wouldn't take the bet that Rose would be back 100% after missing most of two seasons. A healthy Rose shot 32% in the playoffs. I think Melo would be a fool going over there. He will be left carrying the Bulls offense by himself while Rose sit because of swelling and soreness. See Amare.

rgm891

@johneco I do also. If Melo is all about winning a chip like he stated, will he take less money to sign with us. I highly doubt that will be the case, but who knows man.

SuperDuper

@KnickelusKnickleby

Lala would had been given a show on MSG so no I best not believe it.

It is always about family. Why is media acting like Lala is the only wife with influence? Media is what would drive me away from playing for the Knicks.

thatsagoodpoint

@KnickelusKnickleby I'll believe it when I see it. As of right now Melo's poker face is just to slow down the nonstop rumor and speculation of his future.

hashburry

@KnickelusKnickleby Yeah, like CP3.  So Melo takes the max to stay in NY and some other superstar leaves money on the table to come to the mecca of losing and insanity.  Not even close to reality.

And reading between the lines would tell you her statement is totally self serving and Melo continues to NOT say he is committed to the Knicks.  And he is never going to take one dime less than the max, as he showed when he forced how way out of Denver.

@orlando_knickfan@Knicks_Fanatic

You have to look at two factors. Blake is 5 years younger and entering the prime of his career, ages 25-28. Melo will be paid about $5 million more per season and will turn 30 in May.

You don't fix something that isn't broken. Blake is scoring 23 ppg. The Clips have the 3rd ranked offense in the NBA and a top 10 defense.

johneco
johneco

@Biggie@johneco Point taken.

I'm just trying to see who our real potential-championship-contender competition is, if anyone.

I'm hopeful that Melo stays for a 5x20MM contract - i.e. not the full Max.

Or that he doesn't opt out, and sees who he can attract next year.

johneco
johneco

@rgm891@johneco Wait, you really think his chances of winning a chip would be better with us than Chicago?

johneco
johneco

@Biggie@johneco Thanks.  But the cap might rise a couple mil.  20 mil would be the 8th highest salary in the NBA, i.e. pretty good.  The full max he's entitled to (just under 25 mil) would make him the highest paid player in the whole NBA I think.

lindro88
lindro88

@Sandro_Guedez Why would you be sad?  If Melo stays it gives you another 6 years to whine about him.  If he leaves, you really have nothing to talk about.

OLDKNICK
OLDKNICK

@Sandro_Guedez You are back with your name. Damn how many handles do you have? Anyway isnt it good that you have no actual say on whether Carmelo stays or not? It warms my heart. :)

KnickelusKnickleby
KnickelusKnickleby

@hashburry Melo may take a pay cut no matter what the Knicks still can offer him what other teams can't even if he shaved off 15mil no other team at the time can secure that.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@lindro88 @VerySilentJay @Knicks_Fanatic And he's light years from where he should be today.

Too much hype Kia O commercials, not enough focus on his game and development.

The kid's a monster and a freak, no doubt. But he is, quite literally, a modern day version of Amare back when he played with Nash.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@Knicks_Fanatic @VerySilentJay Not nearly enough of a sample size to say that he can carry a team.

Crawford can score with more ease than Griffin for that matter.

And people forget, Collison's a very solid serviceable PG who developed great chemistry and a mentor/student relationship with Paul back in NO.

Add that the master that Pop is and you won't miss a beat.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@lindro88 @VerySilentJay @Knicks_Fanatic I don't agree. He's just like Amare was in Phoenix, except that Amare actually worked on his game.

Blake hasn't improved his FT shooting, has made some improvements with is range, but not nearly enough a player of his supposed "stature" should have.

He should be way ahead of what he is now, which is a testament, imo, to his work ethic.

Too much hype, not enough ball.

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@VerySilentJay@Knicks_Fanatic

Now you might consider the following. The Clips are 32-15 and haven't missed a beat with CP3 out. Griffin is still scoring with Collison at the point. He is hitting 72% of his free throws. Not exactly a liability.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@Knicks_Fanatic Griffin is a product of good PG play. When you have the best PG in the business, good shooters and decent roll men and a HOF, you're bound to be great offensively and defensively.

Griffin's a high flying, low IQ, no defensive awareness type of player. He has no post moves, hasn't made any improvements on either end, and he's a liability from the line. He doesn't have the talent to carry a team by himself. That's not even close to a superstar.

rgm891
rgm891

@johneco @rgm891 Well Chicago is a huge risk.  Does Melo want to play along side an injury prone superstar in Drose and go thru that circus once again?

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@Sandro_Guedez

When Melo signs his extension after he opts out he will become the highest paid player in the league after Kobe's two deal is done. I would think that would mean something to Melo.

OLDKNICK
OLDKNICK

@MeloStat301 @OLDKNICK @Sandro_Guedez Wow!!! I sure liked it better when there was just one handle to talk to... Kinda confusing a bit... I was just getting used to heartcore

rgm891
rgm891

@Biggie @Sandro_Guedez Well Danny Ainge comments didn't help the situation one bit with that team.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@Sandro_Guedez He's 29, Hardly his last contract in the league.  At 34, with Melos game he will get another contract, obviously not a max contract, but he will get another.

He wants free agency because he has never been a free agent.  He can get more years by being a free agent as well, 3 compared to 5..what are you talking about?  Angola sun has you going crazy?
