  • Seton Hall Counting on Kevin Johnson

Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard secured a major recruiting coup in April when he landed 6-foot-10 Kevin Johnson out of Woodland Hills (Calif.) Taft.

The California big man had been leaning toward San Diego State, but seemingly out of nowhere picked the Pirates without having made a visit.

Now Seton Hall is hoping Johnson will be academically qualified and able to help anchor a front line that will also feature returning senior big man Herb Pope and incoming forward Brandon Mobley.

“He’s finishing up summer school and he’s very excited about the upcoming school year and season, so everything’s going according to plan,” Christopher Spann, Johnson’s legal guardian, told SNY.tv by phone.

“So he’s excited and ready to go.”

Longtime New York recruiting expert Tom Konchalski believes Johnson can definitely help the Pirates if he can get on the court.

“I think he can,” Konchalski said. “First of all, he’s big. He’s not only tall but he’s wide. He has a level of skill and can score and has good hands and he can be a factor.

“He’s a big guy. He can be a factor for them. [But it] depends on what sort of physical condition he’s in. He has to improve his ability to change ends of the floor. But that’s a very good get.”
