Seton Hall junior guard Sterling Gibbs, a second-team All-Big East selection, will transfer and be immediately eligible.
The 6-foot-2 Gibbs will be a hugely attractive graduate transfer as he is a seasoned guard with experience at Texas and Seton Hall.
As of Thursday morning, around 50 schools had expressed interest in Gibbs, a source told SNY.tv.
“We appreciate everything Sterling has done for our program over the last three years and wish him all the best as he pursues a Master’s degree at another university,” head coach Kevin Willard said.
He dropped 40 points in one game last season and averaged 16.3 points and 3.8 assists. Gibbs was also suspended two games for hitting Villanova’s Ryan Arcidiacono in the head.
That incident was part of a tough season for Willard and the Pirates that also saw guard Jaren Sina leave late in the season amid a locker room split. Sina, Gibbs’ close friend, later transferred to George Washington.
After the Big East Tournament, Gibbs told SNY.tv he was “definitely coming back.”
“I’m at Seton Hall and that’s where I’m going to be,” he said. “That’s where I’m going to finish it out.”
Asked if it was something he might reconsider or if he’s already made that decision, he said, “That’s already made.”
The Pirates lose seniors Stephane Manga, Brandon Mobley and Haralds Karlis to graduation. At this point have wing Veer Singh, shooting guard Dalton Soffer and transferring forward Braedon Anderson coming in for 2015.
Seton Hall returns Big East Co-Rookie of the Year Angel Delgado, along with Isaiah Whitehead, Khadeen Carrington and Desi Rodriguez.
