Source On Shabazz Muhammad: ‘Odds Aren’t Great For Him Being on the Court Soon’

UCLA freshman Shabazz Muhammad was not cleared by the NCAA to play in Friday night’s season opener against Indiana State due to a violation of amateurism rules and there’s no telling when he will make his debut on the court.

“At this point, the odds aren’t great for him being on the court soon,” a source with knowledge of the case told SNY.tv Saturday.

The source pointed out that Muhammad’s is an enforcement case, as opposed to a waiver situation.

“It could be two days or two months and we wouldn’t know either way until the very last second,” the source added. “Until they wrap up the investigation, it’s impossible to know how close they are to a completed case.”

The NCAA has been investigating Muhammad’s relationship with the financial advisers who paid for several of his recruiting trips.

Muhammad is projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft by DraftExpress.com.

The NCAA and UCLA both issued statements on the case.

Here’s the NCAA’s:

“UCLA student-athlete Shabazz Muhammad is not eligible to compete in tonight’s game due to violations of NCAA amateurism rules. In addition to other pending issues, Muhammad accepted travel and lodging during three unofficial visits to two NCAA member schools.

“The university and the NCAA enforcement staff agreed on the set of facts in the case, which led to the determination that a violation occurred. NCAA member schools have established standards to determine when an individual may provide financial assistance to student-athletes. These criteria, which were not met in this case, are in place to identify when benefits are provided based on a student-athlete’s athletic ability.

“The NCAA is committed to providing thorough, yet timely decisions regarding student-athlete eligibility. The expediency of these decisions can hinge on the level of timely cooperation of all involved parties.

“In the case of Muhammad, the NCAA staff requested specific documents on July 31 to assist in the evaluation of Muhammad’s eligibility. However, the NCAA enforcement staff did not receive the majority of the requested documents for review until September 25, followed by more information on October 10, and the staff was granted access to additional critical information on November 1.

“After reviewing thousands of pages of information, the NCAA interviewed Muhammad’s parents last week. The staff and the university then submitted the agreed-upon facts the afternoon of November 9. The NCAA then rendered a decision within a matter of hours. As demonstrated by the facts, we are committed to resolving the remaining matters as quickly as possible.

UCLA issued the following statement Friday night.

“The NCAA has finally determined that a violation of the NCAA amateurism rules has occurred involving UCLA freshman guard Shabazz Muhammad and his family. As a result, he is ineligible for competition at this time. We are extremely disappointed that the NCAA has made this determination.”

“The University and our compliance staff have fully cooperated with the NCAA throughout this entire period, and we believe the decision is incorrect and unjust to Shabazz. UCLA will expeditiously pursue its options to challenge this determination. When a final resolution has been reached by the NCAA, we will swiftly communicate the news to the entire Bruin family.”

Muhammad’s teammate, former St. Anthony point guard Kyle Anderson, was previously cleared to play after being investigated for potential recruiting violations.

UCLA is due to play in the Legends Classic in Brooklyn Nov. 19-20 along with top-ranked Indiana, Georgetown and Georgia.

Agree, beginning to like Matthews even at 18. Compare specs and stats with Evans and they are not that different. Matthews ran faster in Indy than most expected. Played in SEC, set career records against great competition. Not for nothing, but also have to think he may grade out well on character/intangibles. Stayed in school longer, at Vandy, may have had to go to class sometimes, etc. Scared of Lee. Shorter. Has been dinged up. Didn't not set the turf on fire in 40. West coast guy, etc. Only guy I'd move up for into top 10 would be Mack. Should Barr slide to 18, or one of the top corners (Dennard more likely) that would be great, as well. As sure a thing as Watkins appears to be and as impressive as Evans or even Ebron might be, would not pay big to move up to grab them.

After seeing as much of the Combine as I could, this draft is going to have great value.  A good draft and the Jets could be set for a while at some key positions.  One thing for sure, if the Jets want to get faster on offense, this is a good draft to get some fast RBs and WRs.

Man,  I know this is off topic but I'm really starting to like Jordan Matthews as the #3 WR after Watkins and Evans.  I hadn't realized that he's 6'3.  I think we really need to trade back If Ebron and Evans are both off the board.  I feel like 18 is too early to grab either Lee, Beckham or Matthews- but they'll all be gone by our 2nd round pick.

I know it was sweet, but did we really need to beat the Dolphins?!

The draft is just a form of scouting. Bortles is going to be somebody's QB. If you have a chance to get a close look at a QB you're probably going to have to play against at some point, you take it. Every team should be doing due diligence on all the top QBs every year ... and I'm pretty sure they do.

Picking the best player on the board is what the Jets said their gonna do. So in the first round if Jake Bortles is the best player on the board then the Jets will have to move up cause they want the best player on the board. So I don't know how you guys get confused with dis one didn't Idzik and Rex say they gonna pic the best player available or is that something you guys don't understand..I just read this story over at the new Jets web site called "Bananas in the tail pipe".

Any chance the Gilbert kid from Ok St. will be around at 18?  Would anyone object to taking another CB if it were him or Dennard from MSU?

Jerry Jones is a damn lunatic. Pretty, pretty please let him release DeMarcus Ware. I'll stop fighting with 57 about dumb things, literally anything.

Not too many RBs but lots of WRs.

@SackDance99

I think if the Jets came away with Brandin Cooks, Dri Archer, CJ Federowicz and Devin Street they would seriously improve their offense.

Other guys I would hope they add include Devonta Freeman and Allen Robinson.  If the draft fell right, I think they could get all of them but I think by the 3rd round Rex will want some DB's and that would eliminate Federowicz and Freeman.

@jma020  Beating the Phins and ensuring they missed the playoffs was worth it. That's always worth it.

@jma020  That's not off topic at all. Who was Mathews' QB at Vandy?  Answer: Blake Bortles.  It could help explain the meeting with Bortles ie. trying to get further insight on Mathews,

@jma020  we should be drafting ahead of the Steelers and Ravens too, explain that to me, and Lee is considered almost a top ten pick so if he falls to us jump all over him, it would be nice to get a top WR and TE with the first two picks

@bob

How about Jake from State farm?

@bob  If Sheldon Richardson's clone is available at #1, the Jets should trade up and get him.

@t__k  I think this is an insane thing to think, but the Twitterverse is talking up the idea that the 4.37 could vault Gilbert over Dennard.

I'd take Dennard without hesitation, to answer your question.

@Brendan If the Cowgirls cut D WARE i would let everyone on this site kick me in the nuts at the first home game if we don't go after him now that my friend is a dream come true to get D WARE

Why am I even being mentioned here?

Are you fixated on me or something.....I think I need an internet restraining order.

@Brendan it's a shame that Jones is chasing a 20 year old superbowl memory the wrong way and cant admit that he may need to step back and keep his hands in his pocket

Would you want the Jets to spend around $12 mil per year on a guy who may only be a part time player at this point in his career?

Snead , he was 1 of 5 guys that were not afraid of the ball (during drills). Most of them blinked when the ball hit their hand or whatever. Might seem like nothing but its a bunch.

@Brendan @jma020  I know, it was awesome.  But I can't help but think that drafting from the 10 spot and being able to possibly grab Mack/Evans/Watkins with someone like Matthews in the 2nd round may have been worth the trade off.  Doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the win.

Brendan

@jvsvn Uhh....Bortles played at University of Central Florida, not Vandy.

@Brendan @t__k  I watched Dennard a little this year (parents both went to MSU) and he looked good to me.  I'm not too familiar with Dennard.

Overall though, what do you think about a CB at 18?  Not saying I'm in favor, but just wanted to get some opinion.

Lets assume Evans, Lee, Watkins, Ebron and Amaro are gone (and Mack,  I would kill for Mack), would you be in favor of another CB?

@jdb4 @Brendan  Part time?

Not yet. He's got some years left in those legs. He was a top-10 4-3 DE last year, despite his injury issues.

Frankly I was won over by Verret and Gaines.  I want to watch all the film I can on those two.

@jma020 @Brendan

Not trying to piss in your Cheerios or anything, just provide a different perspective.

When you have watched every game for 49 seasons (~750 games), winning two games to finish 8-8 isn't so awesome when you know 8 or 9 slots in the draft order are involved.

Brendan
Brendan

@jma020 Not worth thinking about, imo.

The way I look at it? The Jets beat the Phins, kept them from the playoffs AND get to pick ahead of them despite having the same record. Double Eff You to Flipper.

SackDance99
SackDance99

@Brendan @SackDance99They could always trade up....  Let's start talking up those 21 reps....he's a BUST!!!!  Maybe that will get him to 18.

Brendan
Brendan

@SackDance99 Well, Mack has a slim chance of lasting to the mid-1st, Clowney doesn't. I'd prefer Clowney, but I'd also prefer LT in his prime. I think the Jets have an equal chance at landing those two players at this stage.

SackDance99
SackDance99

@Brendan @t__kMine is Clowney.  Dunbar coaching his technique, Rex and DT working on him to get the most from him and the Sons and Coples pushing him to excel?  All Clowney needs is his buttons pushed because he's lightning coming off the LOS...on the Jets he'd have to face one-on-one, a TE or a RB...that won't cut it against him.

t__k
t__k

@Brendan @t__k  I know its only one game, but wow, that Ohio State film he has.  He abused that right tackle.

Brendan
Brendan

@t__k You must have missed me yesterday.

For the past five+ years I've made it a habit to relentlessly discuss edge rushers. It's all I wanted in the football universe for the Jets. Yesterday I just said screw it and went back to the well, with Mack as my man crush for this year.

I doubt they get him, but holy christ imagine if it happened? Coples and Mack crashing the edges with the BAWS and Wilkshake pushing the pocket?

t__k
t__k

@Brendan @t__k  I'd be doing flips if Mack was in the general area of 18.  He looks like a beast to me.

Brendan
Brendan

@t__k  If they took one, I'd be fine with it. It'd also stretch it to five years with a DL or CB taken in the 1st round, which would be fantastic for my defensive-loving self.

I am a big supporter of BPA, and if Dennard is there at 18, I am willing to bet he's the team's BPA.

@jdb4 And there were only seven 4-3 DE's who were clearly better than him.

He started off the year like the beast we've grown to know and love, but then he tweaked his thigh and struggled the rest of the year.

My only concern with him would be injury because of age.
