Rashad Vaughn is staying in Las Vegas for college.
“Next year I’ll be attending UNLV,” Vaughn said on CBSSports Network.
“Me and Coach [Dave] Rice kicked off a relationship from the jump and I just liked everything he was talking about. And I liked the blueprint that he set out for me. And me and family, we just decided that this was the best for me.”
The 6-foot-5 Vaughn also listed Iowa State, North Carolina and Kentucky, but will stay in Las Vegas for college after transferring to prep power Findlay Prep from Robbinsdale (MN) Cooper for his senior season.
Vaughn, averaging 20 points and 4.3 rebounds since debuting in January, is ranked No. 7 by Rivals.com and joins Baltimore St. Frances small forward Dwayne Morgan and Wilbraham & Monson (Mass.) center Goodluck Okonoboh in UNLV’s 2014 class.
“It’s just the recruiting class they got coming in with me, I feel we can do something special next year for the team next year,” Vaughn said.
He added: “I know with the pieces we got next year and the team we will have next year, I feel we can win a national championship. That’s just what’s most important to me, so I’ll sacrifice anything to win with these guys.”
SNY.tv reported last week that Morgan and Vaughn are close the former was recruiting the latter to join him.
“He’s a big guard who can score,” New York recruiting expert Tom Konchalski said. “He’s been hurt most of the season, but he’s certainly one of the best big guards, scoring guards, in the class. UNLV has had a history of playing with big, athletic guards like that.
“He’s going to be a terrific player no matter where he goes.”
UNLV is beefing up its schedule next year and will host Arizona, visit Kansas and could also play Duke in the Coaches vs. Cancer at Barclays Center, meaning Vaughn could face off against other elite incoming wings like Stanley Johnson of Arizona, Kelly Oubre of Kansas and Justise Winslow of Duke.
ESPN also has a TV deal with the Mountain West that will help their exposure nationally.
