Eli Cain, the 6-foot-6, 200-pound St. Benedict’s Prep guard, is planning upcoming visits to Iona and DePaul, he told SNY.tv.
Cain will visit DePaul March 3-4 and Iona March 13-14. Selection Sunday is March 15 and as of today Joe Lunardi has Iona in the field of 68 as an automatic qualifier out of the MAAC. Andrew Slater of 247Sports.com first reported the DePaul visit date.
Cain is also still considering Delaware along with Wagner.
DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell and assistant Billy Garrett recently saw Cain when St Benedict’s lost to LSU-bound Ben Simmons and Montverde (FL) Academy at the Metro Classic.
“DePaul was at the Montverde game and they pretty much offered,” St. Benedict’s coach Mark Taylor said. “They’re serious.”
Meantime, Iona associate head coach Jared Grasso saw Cain on Tuesday when St. Benedict’s won their game convincingly.
Taylor believes Cain has a huge upside going forward.
“The thing that’s so attractive about Eli is he has the ability to play four positions,” Taylor said. “He runs the point for us sometimes, he can run the two, he can run the three and he can run the floor as well, which gives him so much versatility. And especially in that kind of a league, the MAAC, and in some of these mid-majors who have to be more creative in how they approach games when they approach big-time teams. So he’s versatile, I think that’s the biggest thing about Eli. I think he’s long and he has some upside. So he can make an impact to the right program immediately and long term. He can become really special.”
