St. John’s Target Marcus LoVett to Decide Soon; Johnnies Also Involved With Trey Dickerson
Ever since Isaiah Briscoe chose Kentucky over St. John’s in November, the Red Storm has been trying to regroup to find their point guard of the future.
Now things may be coming to a head.
Marcus LoVett, a 6-foot point guard from Chicago (IL) Morgan Park, Tweeted Monday morning, “In a week I’ll be making my decision.”
LoVett didn’t specify when and where he will announce his college choice, but he and his father have both given reason to believe the player could land at St. John’s.
“NY seems like a nice place to go,” LoVett Tweeted recently.
Lovett’s father, Marcus LoVett Sr., also told SNY.tv the Johnnies are working the hardest for his son.
“Basically it’s St. John’s, there’s nobody else,” LoVett Sr. said.
St. John’s loses a core of players next year including guards D’Angelo Harrison, Phil Greene IV and Jamal Branch and wing Sir’Dominic Pointer. Junior forward Chris Obekpa and sophomore guard Rysheed Jordan could also opt to turn pro.
“I mean, they need guards, they’re losing like five players, right?” LoVett Sr. said. “That’s what Steve [Lavin] told me.”
He added: “I really like St. John’s, I think it’s a good spot.”
St. John’s visits Marquette Wednesday, and St. John’s assistants Tony Chiles and Rico Hines will see LoVett Tuesday in Chicago, sources confirmed.
Meantime, St. John’s is among the schools involved for Iowa transfer Trey Dickerson, a Queens, N.Y. native.
“I just spoke to Coach Chiles,” Dickerson told SNY.tv. “They [are] highly interested. They wanna finish the conference strong [and] then focus on me.”
The 6-foot Dickerson told SNY.tv that Clemson, Tennessee, Montana, North Dakota State, South Dakota, Iona, Houston, Missouri State, and Miami had also reached out.
“I haven’t planned any visits yet,” he said.
