LAKELAND, Fla.– Before the week started, many knew the name Trent Frazier, but not many had seen what he was capable of.
The sophomore point guard from Wellington (Fla.) hit the game winning FT with .4 seconds left to win the 8A State Championship, 57-56 over Hagerty, giving the Wolverines their first state championship in school history. He finished with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. In the previous win over the favorite in 8A McArthur, Frazier had 19 points, 4 rebounds and 8 assists.
“That’s what we wanted,” Frazier told SNY.tv. “We wanted to have the ball in my hands for the last shot to get the win. Coach likes the ball in my hands because I make plays. I’m the quarterback on the floor, last shot, he wanted it in my hands to knock it down.”
Frazier said that he didn’t have any doubt that he could knock it down.
“I knew I could do it,” Frazier said. “That’s why coach put it in my hands.”
A 6-foot-2 lefty, Frazier plays the game with a poise that is rare among point guards his age. He is extremely versatile, knowing that he will do what it takes for his team to get a win. After the win over McArthur, Frazier said that he realized what it took to get a win over a big team.
“That was probably the best team we’ve faced all year,” Frazier said. “They’re really aggressive and very strong. I’m a sophomore, I had to play like a senior out here tonight. I knew that I couldn’t make any mistakes because everything had to be right to make it on to the next round.”
One of the top sophomores in the state of Florida, Frazier certainly has a bright future in the sport.
