Battle told ESPN he also considered Michigan, Louisville, Virginia, Kentucky and UConn.
“I wanted to be closer to home,” Battle said of his decision to pick Syracuse. “They told me I could be a versatile guard who could have the ball in my hands a lot.”
Syracuse assistant Adrian “Red” Autry watched Battle this weekend when he played with New Heights on the Under Armour circuit.
Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim is expected to coach three more years before turning things over to head coach-designate Mike Hopkins, meaning Hopkins would coach Battle for at least two years.
“It mattered,” Battle told ESPN. “He’s a great guy who will be a terrific head coach. He’s high-energy, and I’m very comfortable and confident in Coach Hop.”
It remains unclear where Battle will finish up his high school career, with Roselle Catholic and St. Joe’s-Metuchen among those in the mix.
Tyus Battle is headed to Syracuse.
After recently decommitting from Michigan and then visiting Syracuse, the 6-foot-6 New Jersey wing guard announced on Twitter Monday that he is headed to the Orange.
