DePaul has landed a walk-on in the Class of 2012 by the name of Cory Dolins.

Ordinarily, the words “DePaul” and “walk-on” might not constitute major news but what if I told you that the 6-foot Dolins is best friends with 2013 wing Jabari Parker, arguably the top player in that class and a future pro?

“I haven’t really talked to him about colleges too much but I know DePaul’s on his list and I’m his best friend, so it might help a little bit,” Dolins told SNY.tv by phone. “But I’m not going to influence him. I don’t want to push him to make a decision either way, but if he goes to DePaul I’ll be extremely happy.

“I hope he goes to DePaul but I’m not going to push it on him.”

Dolins, a senior at Niles West High, also had an opportunity to walk-on for Tom Izzo at Michigan State or to attend a number of Division III schools.

He chose DePaul because of its Honors Accounting Program and because he hopes to contribute on the court.

“I’m a walk-on so I have to play hard and earn my playing time,” Dolins said of head coach Oliver Purnell. “If I work hard enough and become a better shooter and stronger, I’ll be able to play some minutes. He doesn’t know when but he says the best players play, so I just have to continue to work hard and lead by example.”

He added: “The chance to play Division I basketball, it would be a dream of mine. I know I can play Division III but I would rather challenge myself and see what I can do on the Division I level.”

As for his friendship with Parker, the two have known one another since fourth or fifth grade and remain tight.

A Chicago Sun-Times article from January profiled their unique friendship:

Cory is white, Jewish and from north suburban Lincolnwood. Jabari is black, Tongan, Mormon and from the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago.

‘‘We have a lot in common,’’ Jabari said. ‘‘We don’t see color. We’re always helpful to others. We just bond together. There was just a real click when we first played with each other.’’

Who knows if DePaul or Michigan State would be involved with Dolins if he weren’t friends with the 6-7 Parker.

But Dolins is a Division II or III-type player so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that those schools might be involved.

As for Parker, Dolins said his friend is considering, “Duke, Kansas, Michigan State, Washington, I mean wherever he wants to go.”

DePaul is the local school for the Chicago Simeon star and Dolins hopes the team can continue to improve in the year before Parker heads to college.

“I think next year we’ll definitely be better than we were this year and I think we’ll be able to improve,” he said. “We have a pretty young team and Billy [Garrett's] going to come next year [2013] who’s also good friends with Jabari and he’s a great player so we have some pieces there.”

DePaul was once a national basketball factor but has been a Big East bottom=-feeder for some time now.

But if the Blue Demons were to somehow land Parker, the hope for the locals is that they could once again return to national prominence.

“I haven’t been alive when they’ve been good,” Dolins said. “My dad said that back in the day they were really good.

“Since I committed a bunch of DePaul fans have followed me on Twitter so I can see that they’re excited about the program and if we do well I think the whole town will be behind us.”

The 6-foot-9 Obekpa, averaging 12 points, 15 rebounds and 9.5 blocks for Our Savior New American (13-1), is considering 12 schools and no other officials have been mapped out, Our Savior assistant Eric Jaklitsch told SNY.tv.

“Everybody’s trying to get us back to campus,” Jaklitsch said. “It’s tough when we’re playing and everything.”

Obekpa’s list currently includes DePaul, St. John’s, Seton Hall, UConn, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Providence, UCLA, Texas, Oregon, Florida and Kentucky. Everyone but Kentucky has offered, Jaklitsch said.

Obekpa may take a visit to West Virginia at some point and is considering whether to attend Saturday’s Louisville-Seton Hall game.

He also plans to visit St. John’s again, although that could be an unofficial. St. John’s coach Steve Lavin has targeted Obekpa along with JaKarr Sampson, Ricardo Gathers and Orlando Sanchez.

As for the DePaul visit, Obekpa traveled there after playing in Memphis last weekend.

“He flew from Memphis to Chicago,” Jaklitsch said. “He doesn’t say much. He enjoyed it. He got a chance to see Chicago. He watched their game against South Florida [a 75-59 loss]. He took a tour of the campus. He met [2013 commit] Billy Garrett.”

Still, the Nigerian native remains wide open and will wait until after the season to finalize his plans.

“He’s still considering a dozen schools,” Jaklitsch said. “he wants to explore his options and look at everything and weigh the pros and cons like everybody else. He’s only been in the U.S. a year and a half.”

“Yes, sometime within the next two weeks,” Mobley said Tuesday by phone. ”I’m actually going to visit DePaul as soon as I get off spring break.” He said the DePaul visit was set for April 8-9.

The 6-foot-9, 215-pound power forward from St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield, Wisc., has already taken visits to Auburn and Seton Hall.

As for Auburn, he said, “I like the facility, the campus. It’s a brand new arena. I like the team and it being closer to my home.”

Mobley is originally from Savannah, Ga.

As for Seton Hall, Mobley said, “I’ve never been to New York City so it being so close to New York City, there are places where you can go out.”

He also likes the idea of potentially playing in the Big East Conference, which sent 11 teams to the NCAAs.

“That says it all right there,” he said.

Wherever he lands, Mobley intends to be a factor.

“I’m going to be a three, face-up four man,” he said. “Being able to come back and step out to the three, rebound and run-and-gun and push the ball.”

FREE THROWS

Sources close to the Seton Hall program confirmed an earlier ZAGSBLOG report that junior forward Herb Pope would return for his senior season. Pope averaged 9.8 points and 7.9 rebounds this season.

“Cal is the favorite, I would say,” the 6-foot-8 forward told Alex Kline of TheRecruitScoop.com. “I have a good friend on the team, my fellow Canadian, Emerson Murray. They have really nice facilities, great academics and it wouldn’t hurt living in California.”

Anderson, a native of Calgary, Alberta, said Virginia was in the mix, too.

“California and Virginia are the main schools after me,” he told Kline. “They have contacted my high school coach and other people who handle my recruitment. They have also heard from Oregon, Kentucky and a few others.”

Anderson signed his Letter of Intent to DePaul in November, but opted to change his plans in the wake of DePaul adding 6-9 Miami transfer Donnavan Kirk.

LEDO LEAVES SOUTH KENT

Ricardo Ledo, the 6-5 2012 wing who recently verbally committed to Providence, has left South Kent and will likely land at Notre Dame Prep.

“Ricky has decided to withdraw from South Kent,” South Kent coach Kelvin Jefferson said by text.

Sources said he would land at Notre Dame Prep, but Notre Dame coach Ryan Hurd declined comment.

Ledo is the second Big East commit to leave South Kent this season, following 6-10 Kadeem Jack, who’s now redshirting at Rutgers.

South Kent was without Ledo Saturday when they lost to Notre Dame Prep at the Big Apple Invitational, and again Monday when they lost, 72-57, to NIA Prep in the Freedom Fighters’ event at Paterson (NJ) Eastside.

Cincinnati signee Shaquille Thomas was named MVP after leading NIA with 26 points. Uncommitted wing Kelvin Amayo added 20 points for NIA.

St. John’s signee Maurice Harkless had 16 for South Kent.

FREE THROWS

2012 prospects Alex Murphy and Kaleb Tarczewski of St. Mark’s will attend the Virginia-Boston College Wednesday night, per Jay Murphy…Among recruits expected tonight at the Georgetown-Seton Hall game are Kyle Anderson, Austin Colbert, Dakari Johnson, Kelvin Amayo, Ryan Rhoomes and Eugene McCrory…West Virginia coach Bob Huggins will check out 6-5 guard Maurice Aniefiok of Huntington (WV) Prep this weekend, per Huntington coach Rob Fulford. Miami and Indiana are also involved…Brewster Academy guard Eli Carter lists Iowa, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, Wake Forest and South Florida. “I am still open in my recruitment,” he wrote on Twitter. “That is just the schools I have now.”

Next Thursday will mark the one-year anniversary of DePaul’s last Big East win.

Since a victory over Marquette on Jan. 20, 2010, the Blue Demons have lost 17 straight Big East games, including Wednesday’s 78-67 home loss to Seton Hall.

DePaul is 1-39 in its last 40 Big East games.

“There are moments of frustration for me and really I felt like a game like last night could’ve been a turning point for us because we had been playing progressively better in the Big East,” first-year head coach Oliver Purnell said on Thursday’s conference call.

“I felt like, ‘Boy, if we can get one right here we can really build some confidence and get something started.’ Well, we didn’t get it and that’s frustrating.”

The Blue Demons (6-10, 0-4 Big East) ran into the return of Pirates guard Jeremy Hazell, who scored 23 points in his first game in nearly two months after suffering a broken left wrist and a gunshot wound.

“He looked great,” Purnell said. “He just looked very at home and he was a settling influence for them, I thought.”

Longtime former coach Jerry Wainwright was fired a year ago Tuesday with the school mired in a 22-game regular-season losing streak in the Big East. Assistant Tracy Webster took over for the rest of the season on an interim basis, and the team finished 8-23 overall, 1-17 in the Big East.

Purnell made the surprising decision to leave Clemson for a seven-year deal at DePaul even after taking the Tigers to three straight NCAA tournament appearances, including a 21-11 season last year. He had signed a two-year extension in June and was reportedly making $1.6 million annually.

Before Clemson, Purnell turned around the program at Dayton, taking them to two NCAA tournaments. He also coached at Old Dominion and Radford for three years apiece, taking ODU to the tournament once. He has never won an NCAA tournament game.

At the time he left Clemson for DePaul, Clemson athletic director Dr. Terry Don Phillips said he was “shocked” at Purnell’s decision.

“I’m not sure I know what to say,” Phillips said. “I’m in a little bit of shock. … I’m as surprised as anyone.”

Now Purnell is coaching a DePaul team that lost its two top scorers from a year ago, center Mac Koshwal and guard Will Walker.

Purnell’s main challenge is to overcome the losing culture at the Chicago school. Two years ago, the program went 0-18 in the Big East.

“You go through a process of changing the culture,” he said. “You start with the things you talk to your team about, the things that you’re uncompromising on. You go out and recruit some better players as well to upgrade the talent level. And at the same time, teaching those guys those same principles, and the things you need to do in order to win. Things like being on time to execution to playing hard to the way you conduct yourself on and off the floor.”

One bright spot for DePaul has been freshman forward Cleveland Melvin of Baltimore, who had 21 against Seton Hall, leads the Demons in scoring (13.5 ppg) and has won two Rookie of the Week awards.

“He’s a talented young man, he’s really athletic,” Purnell said. “Now he’s starting to really get comfortable with what we’re doing offensively.”

The bad news for Purnell is that junior forward Devin Hill of Stamford, Conn., remains out with an injury.

“It’s still going to be a couple of weeks before he gets back,” Purnell said. “Obviously, we’re a little slim in the post there and we need a body back in there.”

The Big East is a brutal conference, with half the league currently ranked in the Top 25.

No one will take pity on Purnell and his troops.

Least of all Kemba Walker and No. 10 UConn, which is next up for the winless Demons.

This week’s ranking lists eight Big East teams among the top 18, with Georgetown at No. 1, Syracuse at No. 3, UConn at No. 5, St. John’s at No. 7, Pittsburgh at No. 10, West Virginia at No. 12, Notre Dame at No. 14 and Villanova at No. 18.

No other league has as many as three teams in the top 20.

JOHNNIES IN FIRST PLACE

In the first two years of the Big East’s current 18-game scheduling format, home teams won exactly 60 percent of league games. So when St. John’s faced back-to-back road dates to start Big East play, it might have been unrealistic to expect a 2-0 start for the Red Storm.

But new head coach Steve Lavin and his senior-laden team scored wins at West Virginia and Providence to open league play before beating 13th-ranked Georgetown Monday at MSG.

St. John’s won two Big East road games before any other team won one and, at 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the Big East, is off to its best start since the 1999-2000 season.

“We had a good stretch over the past five games, just playing more efficiently on the offensive end of the floor,” Lavin said on Monday’s con call. “I think from the Fordham game forward, our team has done a better job in terms of shot selection and playing through the post. And as a result we’ve had some degree of success.”

Things don’t get any easier, beginning with Saturday’s game at No. 14 Notre Dame and Wednesday’s home game with No. 4 Syracuse.

“They’ll be the most efficient offensive team we’ve played all year,” Lavin said of Notre Dame. “Coach [Mike] Brey has really organized them and you can tell they’ve bought into playing a cohesive brand of basketball. You can see it in the velocity of their cuts and their excellent spacing.

“They’re able to get into the lane and jump stop and pitch the ball out for 3-point shooters. They play well in two gears, in terms of taking the transition opportunities when they present themselves but the team is also willing to get deep into the shot clock and break defenses down. We know we have our hands full playing on the road.”

SNY HOSTS DOUBLEHEADER

The Big East Network Game of the Week series begins this Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon Eastern.

Syracuse faces Seton Hall at noon and Marquette is at Pittsburgh at 2 p.m.

Both games are on SNY.

FRESHMEN PUSHING THE PACE AT DEPAUL

DePaul finished last in the Big East in scoring by a wide margin last season as the Blue Demons averaged just 61 points per game.

New coach Oliver Purnell has implemented his trademark fast-paced style to the Blue Demons in his first year, however, and a pair of freshmen have helped DePaul average 71.5 points through 15 games.

Forward Cleveland Melvin has been named Big East Rookie of the Week in back-to-back weeks and is averaging 23.3 points in three league games. Overall, Melvin has averaged 12.7 points per game, while rookie Brandon Young has averaged 12.6 ppg to rank as the top two freshman scorers in the conference.

SELECTED QUOTES FROM THURSDAY’S CON CALL

Buzz Williams, Marquette

On the upcoming game with Pittsburgh

“I think it’s probably one of the more underappreciated, under-recognized jobs in the country relative to what coach (Jamie) Dixon has done. He’s the BIG EAST active winningest coach. At home they’re almost unbeatable. I think they’ve lost 11 games since the building opened and won 47 of their last 48. I think their personnel and the leadership on their team is as good as anyone in the country. And we’ll have our hands full from start to finish.”

On Jae Crowder

“It’s been the quickest transition of any junior college transfer I’ve ever seen. I’m a former junior college manager so I’m partial to junior college players. When you go through the transition that any junior college transfer has to go through and to do it at this level, I think there’s a lot of stuff you have to work through before you have any success on the court, much less the success Jae has had. We’re really happy to have him. He’s an unbelievable person and I think that’s translated to his success on the floor. He has great instincts. Even though he’s only played 15 games with our program, we rely on him on both ends of the floor on every possession.”

Bob Huggins, West Virginia

On Georgetown

“It’s a little bit scary going to Georgetown after they’ve lost. I’ve got great respect for John and great respect for what their guys do. We’ve just got to figure something out. We’ve had a hard time guarding anybody, but guarding those guys will be very difficult. They execute their offense so well. They all can make shots, they all can play post they all can beat you off the bounce. They just do such a great job.”

Keno Davis, Providence

On the season in general

“I’ve been very encouraged with our team’s play this season. We have arguably the youngest team, not just in the BIG EAST, but in the country, and we’ve been able to have some success. I think in our first three BIG EAST games we’ve had our opportunities, definitely in our last couple against St. John’s and Pittsburgh, but weren’t able to finish things off. I’ve been very encouraged with our team’s effort. I think, being so young, that we have the ability to improve the most, a lot more than teams with more veterans. We start a three game road trip that starts with Rutgers on Saturday night and our guys are looking forward to it and the challenges the BIG EAST poses this year.”

Jim Calhoun, Connecticut

On the season:

“Obviously we started the season off wonderfully. I think we had incredible freshman energy and team energy, and of course a phenomenal performance by Kemba Walker. I think, like any other team, once you get back to league play, whether it be against Pittsburgh or USF, who gave us a great game, we have to fix some of the small problems that we have. We’ve got to grow older as the season progresses and I think we will. I think we will be a better team four weeks from now. We haven’t played bad but we’ve made enough mistakes that I think cost us the game at Notre Dame. We have just got to get better.”

On Texas:

“Texas has got some terrific players. We have more than our work cut out for us. The bottom line is we’ve got some work to do. We just have to get older.”

On early season success

“Maui certainly wasn’t a fluke, but it was early season. Early season we had all kinds of energy and people didn’t know us. The tape is starting to catch up a little bit and now we have to catch back up with the tapes.”

Jamie Dixon, Pittsburgh

On the win against Providence

“We’re happy to get a road win against Providence, a very good team that’s lost some tough games. We found a way to win with some foul trouble, some sickness and some injuries. It was a good finish for us.”

On Travon Woodall

“He had a good freshman year and now he’s an improved sophomore. He was one of those kids that was sick before our last game and didn’t practice before the game. He was able to make some big plays down the stretch after getting off to a slow start. He brings good leadership and is still improving defensively. He makes good decisions and he’s a good guy to have on your team, especially coming off the bench and playing well.”

Kevin Willard, Seton Hall

On Syracuse

“We’re playing one of the best teams in the country in Syracuse. But we’re glad to be home and look forward to a great challenge on Saturday.”

On Jeremy Hazell

“Jeremy is doing terrific. Obviously he had a very serious incident on Christmas but he’s recovering very well from that physically, mentally he’s doing ok. He’s taking some time off just to relax a little bit. He’s still working out and shooting but has not been cleared and won’t get cleared until at least the 10th. But mentally and physically he’s doing much better. We haven’t made a decision on if we’re going to redshirt him. If his wrist has healed and he’s cleared on the 10th we’ll sit down with him and his family and decide what’s going to be best for him.”

John Thompson III, Georgetown

On team’s play

“This league is rough. We start off three games in and we’re 1-2. We had a tough stretch where we played Wednesday, Saturday and Monday with two of those games on the road and we lost the two road games. It’s a long season and you can’t get too down even though you’re down right now. You can’t get too down because it’s an unforgiving league. We just have to focus here. We have a game coming up against West Virginia and like any other team in the league, we have to play well to win.”

On Hollis Thompson

“He played well in stretches the other night. Hollis can put the ball in the basket. He’s a very good shooter and for as slight as he is, he’s a very good rebounder. He’s not afraid to stick his nose in there and get after the ball. He’s a confident kid who can put the ball in the basket but is not afraid to go in there and get rebounds and defend as well.”

Sort of.

His father, David, said Maryland and Miami are now being considered along with the original seven of Cal, Washington, Oregon, St. John’s, Georgia Tech, UConn and DePaul.

“He’s reconsidering Maryland at this point,” David Brown said Wednesday night by phone. “He’s also kind of looking at Miami a little bit. Jabari was originally not that interested in them. Now he’s a little more interested.”

The 6-foot-5 Brown of Oakland, Calif., is the No. 5 shooting guard in the Class of 2011.

At this point, the Browns have these home visits on the calendar:

Sept. 9 – Washington

Sept. 10 – Maryland

Sept. 14 – DePaul

Sept. 21 – Georgia Tech

Sept. 23 – Oregon

Sept. 28 – Cal

David said no home visits have yet been planned with St. John’s or UConn and that he’s been playing “phone tag” with Johnnies coach Steve Lavin.

As for UConn, he said head coach Jim Calhoun “seemed more interested in having the official visit.”

The only official visit set so far is with Washington the weekend of Sept. 17.

Asked if the Washington Huskies were the favorite here, David said:

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s pretty open. With Jabari, he’s non-committal. Lorenzo [Romar] has been the most aggressive from early on. He’s developing a rapport with Jabari. He’s calling us periodically. He’s been pretty aggressive. Jabari still says, ‘I’m wide open.’”

David added that Jabari wants to take his officials before doing anything.

“He said, ‘I don’t know UConn. I know the program. I don’t know the staff,’” David said. “He doesn’t want to do anything until he visits those campuses. He sounds like he wants to make a decision during the early signing period.

“He has to make it pretty quick if he wants to get it done by November.”

MACK PLANNING VISITS

St. Anthony senior point guard Myles Mack will take an unofficial to Seton Hall Thursday and to Rutgers Sept. 2 for the Norfolk State football game, per his mother.

She said he has also been offered by UConn, DePaul, Marquette, Boston College, West Virginia, Virginia and Miami but has yet to cut his list.

LEWIS TO DELAWARE

Khalid Lewis, a 6-3, 175-pound combo guard from Trenton (N.J.) Catholic and Team NJABC, verbally committed to Delaware Wednesday night.

He chose Delaware over Rice, Robert Morris, Manhattan, Wagner, Drexel, Fairfield and Rider.

“He helped lead Trenton Catholic to the TOC championship this year with other Team NJABC players Frantz Massenat (Drexel), Dondre Whitmore (Harcum), and Markese Tucker (St. Peters),” said Matt Pauls of Team NJABC. “His high school coach at TCA, Fred Falchi, has done a nice job helping in Khalid’s development.

“Khalid is a tremendous defender – probably the best defensive guard on the NY/NJ/Philly area, and is an excellent rebounder from the guard position. He can get to the rim against anyone off the bounce, and his one developmental gap is his jump shot. If he improves that, watch out. He is long, athletic, and a fierce competitor.”

FREE THROWS

Maurice Harkless of Queens and Naadir Tharpe of Brewster (N.H.) Academy were both on St. John’s campus Wednesday. Harkless still has an official set for Sept. 2…6-4 guard Dominique Pointer of Quality Education (N.C.) takes an official to St. John’s Sept. 17-19…Former Cardozo big man Ryan Rhoomes will attend St. Stanislaus Prep in Mississippi this fall, per his mother…Former St. John’s commit Davontay Grace of Brooklyn Thomas Jefferson committed to Manhattan.

Greene visited St. John’s unofficially this week and enjoyed his time in New York.

“The visit was fun,” Greene said. “They showed me the practice gym and around the school. They also took me to the Garden where they play their home games.”

Greene has set officials with St. John’s the weekend of Sept. 3/4 and West Virginia Sept. 10/11.

He is also considering Oklahoma State, UTEP, Oregon, Arizona State, TCU and Marquette.

“I’m a good scorer who can shoot, drive and dish,” he said. “I’m also a very good defender.”

“Washington, UConn, Georgia Tech, Oregon, DePaul, St. John’s and Cal,” Brown said by phone.

An Oakland, Calif. native who had a terrific summer with the Drew Gooden Soldiers, only has one official planned, to Washington Sept. 18.

“I’m going up to Washington,” he said. “That’s the only one I have but I’m working on a few more. I should have a few more set in the next few days.”

Brown will likely take an unofficial to Cal since it’s close and then perhaps take another unofficial as well.

“That’s what I’m trying to work out right now with my parents,” he said. “Where I take the other unofficial.”

Brown is one of several West Coast players actively considering St. John’s, along with Mesa (Az.) point guard Jahii Carson and Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep wing Amir Garrett.

“I still like St. John’s, still like [head coach Steve] Lavin,” Brown said.

“He’s a guy who’s coached at he top level before, at UCLA. He has a pretty open style and he has gotten a few guys to the league.”

Brown said he hopes to decide “before the early signing period” ends in November.

FREE THROWS

John Wall and Brandon Jennings will serve as coaches for the Boost Mobile Elite 24 Game Aug. 28 in Venice Beach…6-9 big man Desmond Hubert of New Egypt (N.J.) and the Playaz said he’s considering Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Wake Forest and Maryland but says he’ll add more to the list. “I didn’t set any [visits] up yet,” he said…Jahii Carson of Mesa (Az.) said he plans to visit Arizona, Washington and UNLV. St. John’s also in the mix but nothing set…DePaul has offered Hudson Catholic sophomore Reggie Cameron, per Alex Kline…Kline also reports that Ethan Telfair is transferring back to Lincoln High School…6-8 St. Anthony junior PG Kyle Anderson will take an unofficial to St. John’s on Thursday.
