Iona College is less than 60 miles from Rutgers University, and the former now stands to benefit tremendously from what recently transpired at the latter.

With five Rutgers players transferring following the Mike Rice firing, Iona could end up landing two of them — or 40 percent.

Junior wing Mike Poole has already declared his intentions to play for Iona coach Tim Cluess, and sophomore big man Derrick Randall of The Bronx will visit the Iona campus Saturday.

As previously reported here, all of the Rutgers transfers could wind up getting waivers to play immediately next season.

“All of the players who transferred into Iona have countless opportunities to excel on and off the court,” Nate Blue, Poole’s mentor, told SNY.tv. “Poole hopes to follow in the path of Mike Glover, Lamont “Momo” Jones and Tavon Sledge.”

Thanks to a roster fueled by big-time transfers like those, Iona has made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. The Gaels won the MAAC Tournament championship this past March.

A Long Island native and Hofstra alum, Cluess was courted by Hofstra after Mo Cassara was fired, but opted to remain and re-up in New Rochelle.

With Jones graduating, Cluess is now moving forward with a roster that includes transfers Sledge (Iowa State), David Laury (Western Kentucky/ JUCO), Tre Bowman (Penn State) and former Marshall pledges Kelvin Amayo and Isaiah Williams.

The 6-5 Poole, and potentially, the 6-8 Randall — both New York City natives — could now join that mix.

“I kind of think kids deserves second chances and sometimes you get a kid who’s a little bit hungry because they’re looking for that second opportunity,” Cluess told SNY.tv.

“And I think when you find a kid with an edge, you usually get a kid that’s going to compete harder and work harder at his game. Sometimes it helps you fill a need during that period of time when maybe you don’t have anyone in that spot, rather than somebody who’s young and you have to wait a couple of years if he’s not ready yet. If you can find a kid who’s a good kid and is disciplined and works hard to fit in academically, athletically and socially with the team you have, it can be a good mix.”

Iona isn’t the only school benefitting from the Rutgers situation, to be sure.

Florida landed guard Eli Carter, the team’s leading scorer, and Auburn picked up guard Jerome Seagears.

“Florida just got a transfer from Rutgers and so did Auburn so I think everyone’s looking at an opportunity,” Cluess said. “Does that player fit your style and does that player fit your need because if you’re bringing in a transfer or junior college kid, they have fit your style and need right away in order to make it worth their while to have a productive player and a happy player.”

But Cluess’ philosophy lends itself to adding players who chose to leave Rutgers.

He said he learned the philosophy while playing at St. John’s for legendary coach Lou Carnesecca.

“I played for a coach at St. John’s who did that and saw how it worked for them way back then,” Cluess said. “He would bring in transfers every year. During the time I was there, we had three on our team, Curtis Redding, Reggie Carter and Bernard Rencher all came in. Those are the three that were high-level transfers.”

There is a downside to adding transfers, Cluess said.

“The downside is you’re re-teaching things very often to a larger group,” he said. “You’re not going to have those guys there for four years, so there is something special about a kid who can last in this program for four years. I think they know what you’re doing and it becomes very instinctual for them.

“But again it’s more about the kid than it is where he’s coming from because you can bring a freshman in and he be a great kid and you can bring a freshman in who could be a problem. And it’s same thing with transfers and junior college players, you have to pick each kid individually.”

From where Blue sits having watched other transfers succeed at Iona, the philosophy seems to be working.

“The coaching staff at Iona really loves basketball and you sense it when speaking to each one of them,” he said.

“They want to graduate you, make you a better player and let you have fun, all while making it to the NCAA Tournament.”

Mike Poole, a 6-foot-5 junior wing, pledged to Iona after visiting the campus Wednesday.

“Mike felt it was time to move on and get a fresh start after his experience at Rutgers,” his mentor, Nate Blue, told SNY.tv.

“It had been a long, trying three years and he is very excited about moving on to a successful winning program at Iona. The Iona staff has known Mike since high school and he is very comfortable with them on and off the court.”

Poole averaged 4.4 points and 3.0 rebounds in 18.6 minutes last season as a junior.

He scored a career-high 18 points against Iona when Rutgers played the Gaels Dec. 9 at Madison Square Garden, and Blue said he liked head coach Tim Cluess’ up-tempo style.

Poole is expected to apply for a waiver from the NCAA in order to become eligible for the 2013-14 season. Given the circumstances surrounding the Mike Rice firing at Rutgers, it is possible all the Rutgers transfers get waivers to play immediately.

The Iona coach has recommitted to coaching the Gaels for at least the next five years, the school announced.

Reports earlier Saturday had the Hofstra alum and Long Island native as a done deal to his alma mater. Hofstra pays about twice what Cluess makes at Iona, sources told SNY.tv.

Cluess, in three years at the helm, has led the Gaels to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2012 and 2013, along with a MAAC Tournament Championship this spring.

With a 20-14 record this year, the Gaels have under Cluess’ leadership notched a record of 70-34 in the last three seasons. He came to Iona in 2010 after successful stints at the Division II level at C.W. Post, the junior college level at Suffolk Community College and the high school level at Saint Mary’s in Manhasset, NY.

“I’m excited about the coming season and continuing to build on our success. I believe in the future of men’s basketball and the College itself,” Cluess said. “President Nyre and the entire Iona community have been so supportive of me and our program.”

“Iona is at heart a liberal arts college, but it has the commitment to doing Division I athletics the right way and making athletics an integral part of the college experience. We of course want to be successful, but we also want our student-athletes to be successful in both competition and the classroom.”

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — David Laury isn’t exactly B.A. Baracus or Royce White when it comes to airplanes, but he certainly isn’t a big fan.

“I just don’t like it, I feel like I’m not in control of what’s going on,” the 6-foot-8, 240-pound Laury, who has flown reluctantly many times, told SNY.tv Monday following practice at Iona.

On Wednesday afternoon, Laury and the No. 15 Gaels will board an airplane at Westchester County Airport for Dayton, Ohio in order to meet No. 2 Ohio State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Friday at 7:15 p.m.

For a man who moved more than 20 times as a child and later made 10 stops in six states at various high schools, prep schools, junior colleges and colleges, one more flight to the Big Dance will be a welcome trip.

“It’s a blessing, I’m just excited to finally be able to play college basketball and get to play in the NCAA Tournament is going to be a feeling that I can’t put in words,” said Laury, 22.

That Laury is here is a testament to his strength and determination in overcoming long odds. As a child, The Star-Ledger previously reported, Laury moved often, shuttling around between his mother’s home in New Jersey, his grandmother’s home in Virginia, back to his mother’s before a stop at his father’s home in Jersey and then on to his Godparents.

He attended three high schools, with basketball always a driving force in his life, always a potential route to something bigger and better.

“We moved around a lot, I couldn’t control that,” he said. “Things that happened were beyond my control.”

Laury said he lived in early childhood with his two siblings and sometimes friends in a room in his mother’s homes in East Orange and Orange, N.J.

“The place I lived at had limited space,” he said. “And on top of that, if her friends didn’t have anything, she would always be feeding them or letting them come stay with us and we just didn’t have space to begin with so that would add more problems.”

That ultimately led to him moving out to live with his father and, after the two had problems, then his Godparents.

Once before his sophomore year, Vaughn Williams, Laury’s Godfather and the father of Laury’s teammate, Corey Williams at Burlington County, took the two boys shopping for clothes and Laury cried.

“That was the first time I’ve been ever taken school shopping,” Laury told SNY.tv, echoing the story he told the Ledger.

“He said, ‘This is the first time somebody ever took me school shopping,’” Vaughn Williams told the paper. “It was emotional. I felt bad that he had to go through that.”

His seemingly endless journey from one school to another nearly came to an abrupt halt three years ago when he nearly gave up basketball after coming back home to New Jersey from Western Kentucky University.

“I was supposed to go to Western Kentucky, I was there for two weeks,” he said of his time at the school in 2009. “People don’t know the real story but I didn’t clear the [NCAA] Clearinghouse…I was contemplating whether I would give [basketball] up.”

Laury still can’t understand how he didn’t clear the Clearinghouse.

“My grades from NIA Prep didn’t clear the Clearinghouse and a student who was NIA Prep with me (Y’Von Raymond), he took three of the same courses at NIA Prep and he cleared so I don’t know,” he recalled.

Alif Muhammad, the head of NIA Prep, said Laury’s classwork was “incomplete and unacceptable,” while Raymond “took care of business.”

Now Muhammad says he’s “proud” of Laury.

“He has matured and is a better person,” Muhammad said.

Still, in 2009 up on his return from Western Kentucky, Laury didn’t want to attend junior college because he had been told that “it was bad and you lose two years and such and such.”

He ended up at Ocean Academy, a postgraduate outfit in New Jersey where he took SAT prep class but attended no classes. He said he got a lot of bad advice.

“The people where I come from are not good people,” he said. “Not a lot of people are genuinely good people. Everybody has ulterior motives.”

He added: “It’s like the way I grew up, nobody was going to do anything for you unless it was going to benefit them.”

While at Ocean Academy, Laury first committed to Iona in November 2009, but changed course when Kevin Willard took the Seton Hall job the following spring.

He then committed to UMass in April of 2010, but couldn’t go because he still wasn’t eligible.

“I was all set to go,” he said.

Laury then made more two stops at Lamar State in Texas and Garden City Community College in Kansas before Iona head coach Tim Cluess and associate head coach Jared Grasso saw him at an open gym at Garden City in the fall of 2011.

“I saw a 6-8 point guard,” Grasso said. “He was a kid who could get it off the glass and lead the break and make his teammates better. He was the perfect point forward for our system. Me and Tim offered him on the spot.”

Laury committed in October 2011 and sat out a year before suiting up this past January. He has been a more than suitable replacement for former Iona forward Michael Glover, averaging 13.1 points and 10.4 rebounds, while providing an inside presence to balance out the perimeter scoring of guards Lamont “Momo” Jones and Sean Armand.

“Obviously, he was on a difficult journey for many years until he got some stability in his life,” Cluess said. “And I think the fact that he’s been here and had that year to academically get settled and get used to college life and expectations and all that, I think he’s a more grounded kid right now and more focused than what he was. He’s got a long way to go in developing both on and off the court, but I’m really happy with the strides he’s making and I think he’ll be a big part of our program as we continue to move forward with him.”

While facing a hostile atmosphere and a heavily favored opponent, Cluess wants Laury to study Ohio State forward Deshaun Thomas up close, thinking he can learn a thing or two from the Buckeyes star.

“I want David to look at him and say, how hard do you need to work to be anywhere near what this kid is, and I’m hoping that lights a fire in Dave with his future,” Cluess said.

Of course, in order to see Thomas in person and get a glimpse of what he could be, Laury must first board an airplane.

Just the latest step in his own personal basketball odyssey.

Special to ZAGSBLOG

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Iona has punched its ticket to the Big Dance and earned a shot at redemption.

A year after blowing a 25-point lead and losing to BYU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Gaels are making a return trip.

This time around, they guaranteed their trip by winning the MAAC Tournament championship outright instead of nervously awaiting an at-large bid on Selection Sunday. Iona will enter the Big Dance on a five-game winning streak.

“This year, it’s a lot more meaningful,” Lamont “MoMo” Jones said after scoring 14 points to help Iona claim the championship with a 60-57 victory over arch-rival Manhattan at the MassMutual Center. “If you told me nine months ago that this was going to be the case, I probably wouldn’t have believed it.”

Jones, a Harlem native who climbed over the seats to embrace his mother following the victory, will now be headed to the Big Dance for the the third consecutive year after last season and the previous year’s Elite Eight run with Arizona.

Several of Jones’ teammates are also making a return trip, while some, like big man David Laury (10 points, six rebounds) and reserve guard Tre Bowman (20 points on 7-of-9 shooting), will be dancing for the first time.

“I said from the beginning of the season that we were going to make the tournament the right way,” said junior guard Sean Armand, one of four players left over from last year’s roster. ”Hard work pays off no matter what you do, and this shows it right here.”

Iona coach Tim Cluess also paid homage to a fallen recruit who would have been on the team.

“To me, it’s about effort, and I’m thrilled to be going back with the four players who were with us last year,” Cluess said. “I’m also thrilled to be representing Mike Haynes, who would have been with us right now.”

Haynes, a 6-7 forward from Chicago who signed with Iona for the 2012-13 season, was shot and killed last July at 22 while trying to break up a fight over a stolen necklace near his home.

The Jaspers (14-18) led at halftime, 26-24, but the Gaels seized control in the second half.

Down 35-30 with 14 1/2 minutes left in regulation, Iona went on a 17-2 run to take a 47-37 lead with 8:41 to play.

Manhattan tried to come back and cut the deficit to 56-52 with 1:24 left, but the Jaspers lacked rebounding opportunities when they needed it most.

Bowman made a pair of free throws with 28 seconds to go and Laury dunked with six seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.

After a late-season swoon that saw Iona lose six out of seven games, each by three points or less, the Gaels heated up at tournament time, winning three straight here, including the semifinal victory over top-seeded Niagara.

Iona (20-13) had to win three games in three different styles to cement their place in the bracket.

In the Gaels’ quarterfinal victory over Canisius, Jones and Armand combined for 57 of Iona’s 89 points and shot 25-of-26 at the free throw line.

Against Niagara in the semifinals, five Gaels scored in double figures.

In the championship, Iona had to gut it out on defense against a Manhattan team that allowed only 60 points per game to their opponents. Add that all up, and you get a team who played the most complete basketball to be one of potentially two New York-area representatives hearing their names announced on Selection Sunday.

Manhattan coach Steve Masiello, who received a questionable technical foul for being outside of the coaches’ box in the second half, believed at the half his team was on the verge of its first bid since 2004.

Up two points, he told his players in the locker room that they were 20 minutes away from their “ultimate goal.”

Afterward, he had a different message.

“We’re going to look back on this day and cherish it,” Masiello said. “And this will be the fuel to Manhattan’s future.”

The Jaspers should be very good next year, when they get injured star George Beamon and Maryland transfer Ashton Pankey back.

For now, it is Iona’s time to celebrate.

“We felt that if we were going to win it, we were going to have to win it the hard way,” said Cluess. ”We deserved it because of that.”

Now, the Gaels have a second straight date at the dance and a shot at redemption.

One of two things will happen tonight at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass.

Either coach Steve Masiello and No. 6 Manhattan (14-17) will beat Iona in the MAAC championship and qualify for the NCAA Tournament with a 15-17 record….

Or, coach Tim Cluess and No. 4 Iona (19-13) will win, sending the Gaels to the Big Dance for the second straight season — and with a chance to redeem themselves after their second-half collapse against BYU last season.

Either way, New York City-area basketball wins.

In a year when St. John’s, Rutgers and Seton Hall won’t go dancing unless something miraculous happens this week at Madison Square Garden, the winner of the Iona/Manhattan game will.

And LIU also has a shot. The Blackbirds face Mount St. Mary’s in the NEC championship game Tuesday night at the LIU Wellness Center with a chance to go to the NCAAs for the second straight season.

Masiello and Manhattan are in this position despite having begun the season at 3-9 and despite losing MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, George Beamon, to a foot injury that will force him to redshirt.

But they’re here now after knocking off Fairfield, 60-42, in Sunday’s semifinals behind Emmy Andujar’s 16 points and Michael Alvarado’s 12.

“Iona’s been the premier college, somewhere we want to be in going to back-to-back NCAAs and getting at-large bids, having great nonconference wins,” Masiello told MassLive.com. “Tim Cluess has done a fantastic job. They’re kind of the face of New York basketball right now and I say that with great admiration.

“I think you’re looking at two very good college basketball programs who are going to play for the opportunity to go to the Big Dance. Both of these teams deserve to go.”

Iona, meantime, lost six of nine down the close of the regular season, but knocked off No. 5 Canisius and No. 1 Niagara to get to the final and has now won four straight.

Four players scored double-figures in the semi, including David Laury, who went for 20 points and 17 boards, and MAAC Player of the Year Lamont “Momo” Jones, who tallied 17 points with five assists.

“Our kids played their hearts out for 40 minutes,” Cluess told LoHud.com. “They shared the ball, defended, rebounded, made shots, made plays. We played a great Niagara team, played very well, and we’re fortunate to come out on top.”

A year ago, a loaded Iona team featured Michael Glover up front and Scott Machado at the point. The favored Gaels lost the MAAC championship game to Fairfield but still received an at-large bid amid much controversy.

They looked like the Miami Heat for a half against BYU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but blew a 25-point first-half lead and lost 78-72.

It [stinks]. It [stinks],’’ Machado told the New York Post at the time.

A year later, Iona is back in the title game with a chance at redemption.

Standing in their way is a Manhattan team looking to go to the Big Dance with a sub-.500 record.

The teams split their regular-season meetings and will now lay it all on the line for a chance to go dancing.

Either way, New York basketball wins.

Much traveled point guard Kelvin Amayo is headed to Iona — and he hopes it’s his last stop.

“Yeah, I just committed,” Amayo told SNY.tv. “I talked to Coach [Tim] Cluess.”

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Amayo recently left Marshall, as first reported by SNY.tv, because he said they did not have a scholarship for him. Before that, he had committed to Towson but was ruled academically ineligible by the NCAA.

Now he will enroll at Iona May 13 and the school will go through a waiver process for immediate eligibility and an additional year of eligibility. He will have at least three years of eligibility remaining.

“They’re going to go for the waiver right way because I was misled [at Marshall],” Amayo said. “They didn’t have a scholarship.”

Marshall has had 13 players on scholarship since the fall, sources told SNY.tv. Sources said Amayo did not show up for practice Jan. 7, the day he announced he was leaving, and still hadn’t informed head coach Tom Herrion of his decision as of that night.

Now Amayo, who turned 21 Jan. 9, hopes to play at Iona beginning in the 2013-14 season. He could play anywhere from the one to the four with the Gaels.

“I’m going to go to school in May,” he said. “I probably [won't play] till the beginning of the season next year. I’ll have four years.”

The Hillside, N.J., native has a “very good relationship” with David Laury, another former Newark NIA Prep product.

Amayo will join a core that will include Laury, incoming junior college wing Isaiah Williams, and guards Sean Armand and Tavon Sledge, which could be Iona’s most talented core to date.

He was recruited by associate head coach Jared Grasso and likes the entire staff.

“Coach Grasso did a tremendous job recruiting me,” Amayo said. “When I went up to Iona for the unofficial, every member of the coaching staff was there, telling me what I needed.”

He added: “I needed a place where I can blossom. I can’t afford another place where I don’t know what the coach was thinking.”

In other Iona news, a source told SNY.tv that “it’s not looking promising” that 7-footer Norvel Pelle, who committed last August, will suit up for the school. The NCAA still hasn’t moved forward on the questionable eligibility of the one-time St. John’s pledge.

Special to ZAGSBLOG

PHILADELPHIA – As first impressions go, David Laury made a pretty darn good one for Iona on Thursday night in a road game at La Salle.

On his very first touch, the 6-foot-8, 238-pound sophomore grabbed a rebound, went coast-to-coast and finished on the other end, drawing the foul and completing the 3-point play. In a nine-minute first-half run, he would pour in nine points and grab eight rebounds; by the end of the night he had a team-high 21 points (8-13 FG, 5-6 FT) as well as a game-high 14 rebounds in 26 minutes.

“Were we expecting it? No. Did I think he had it in him? Yes,” Iona coach Tim Cluess told SNY.tv after the game. “I thought he had a very nice first game out there. Obviously, there’s a lot of things he has to learn to fit within our team, but individually he did a really good job and we expect big things out of him as we go forward.”

What made it even more unexpected was that Laury had only practiced with the team once prior to the game, instead of the full season that many transfer players get to adjust to their new teammates and coaches.

“Our unit now has got to find some new cohesiveness because it’s a new body being added after only one day, and that throws you out of sync on both ends a little bit, but I do expect big things and I thought he did very well for the first time on the floor in quite some time,” Cluess said.

The Gaels could certainly use some help in the frontcourt. 6-7 senior Taaj Ridley is averaging 6.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in 22.6 minutes while 6-9 junior Shawn Jackson is averaging just 2.0 points and 3.1 rebounds in 15.7 minutes per game. According to KenPom.com, Iona is one of the 20 shortest teams in the country, and in addition to adding a 6-8 body they get one who showed off a nice handle and a great spin move in the lane.

“I think my skill set is unique, I can cause matchup problems,” Laury said. “I’ve been playing point guard in prep school and stuff like that, so I’m used to it, just gotta get in shape.”

“I think just his toughness, his rebounding, his offensive ability, his passing ability,” Cluess said about what it is that makes Laury an effective player. “I think he’s got a good head for the game. Obviously he needs to get into shape and he needs to learn what we do, so he’s got a lot of work ahead of him, but I expect him to be one heck of a player as he moves forward.”

One of the things Laury and his coach agreed on was that he didn’t do enough work to get ready on his own from a conditioning standpoint, but now that he’s practicing with the team, Laury doesn’t expect that to be a problem. He said he currently weighs 238 but doesn’t see much of a problem getting his body to where he wants it.

“I only had one day to practice, so I’m sure within the next two weeks I’ll be 230,” he said. “But I don’t want to get lower than 230, 235 because I like to post up and be physical.”

It was a long-awaited debut for the sophomore from West Orange (N.J.), who originally committed to Iona back in 2009 — after signing an NLI to attend Western Kentucky — before winding up in the JUCO ranks at Lamar State (TX). Aftering averaging 16.2 points and 9.8 rebounds in his freshman season at the junior college, he committed to Iona last October and sat out last season per NCAA transfer rules.

“I felt like out of everybody, they were the most genuine about what kind of coaches they are, how they run their offense, where I would play in the offense, and what kind of team they’re trying to build and the tradition they already have going,” Laury told SNY.tv. “Coach Cluess is a run-and-gun coach, he wants you to be in shape, he wants you to be mentally tough, so I like that.”

NEW YORK — Norvel Pelle is unlikely to suit up for Iona this season — and may never wind up playing with the Gaels.

The 7-footer from California is not currently on Iona’s campus and isn’t expected anytime soon.

“He hasn’t been cleared by the NCAA,” a source close to the Iona basketball team told SNY.tv following Rutgers’ 81-73 victory over Iona at Madison Square Garden. “He went to so many schools, they’re still probably trying to track down his paperwork.”

Asked if there was any chance Pelle would play for Iona this season, the source said, “Ninety-five percent, no. Miracles do happen.”

A onetime St. John’s commit, Pelle pledged to Iona in August amid comparisons to Kevin Durant.

But he was not cleared by the NCAA in 2011 when he was supposed to enroll at St. John’s, and nothing has changed since then.

“Yes, I’m waiting on the NCAA,” Pelle said in August.

Iona does expect 6-8 forward David Laury for the team’s Dec. 20 game at La Salle. Laury had to sit out the first semester due to NCAA initial eligibility regulations.

“They’re a good basketball team,” Rutgers coach Mike Rice said. “They’re a great offensive basketball team. As soon as they get some of the guys sitting out, that’s a 20-win team.”

Tavon Sledge wanted to come home to be closer to his father.

Kwame Sledge is ill and Tavon, a 5-foot-9 sophomore point guard from Spring Valley, N.Y., needed to be with him.

So he transferred from Iowa State, where he was getting little playing time, and moved to Iona, where he enrolled in summer classes. On Thursday, he learned that he had received a hardship waiver to play immediately.

“My father’s sick,” Tavon told SNY.tv, declining to specify what the illness is. “He’s been sick since I was in Iowa and it’s just been getting worse. When I thought about transferring back home, I kept my father in my mind, my family,

and came to the conclusion that the best thing for me to do is to come back close to my family and try to do as much as I can to help him out.”

Sledge, who now has three years of eligibility, joins a loaded backcourt at Iona that includes Lamont “Momo” Jones, Sean Armand, DaShawn Gomez, Curtis Dennis, Tre Bowman and A.J. English.

“When I first heard that I was granted my waiver I was really excited,” Sledge told SNY.vv. ”The first thing that came to mind was stay in the gym, keep working on my game and think about the upcoming season.”

He added: “As far as what I know I can bring to the table, my speed, my athleticism, being an all-around smart point guard. Getting players involved and putting shooters and big men in spots where I know they’re more dominant and they can help us win a game.”

Iona coach Tim Cluess, who continues to add transfers and junior college players with experience, was thrilled.

“I commend my staff and our compliance administrators once again in their tireless effort and assistance in preparing the waiver for Tavon,” he said. “The NCAA is also thanked for their diligence in the decision making process to allow him to play.”

Sledge spent one season at Iowa State and saw limited action in eight games during the 2011-12 campaign.

Sledge played alongside current Milwaukee Bucks forward Tobias Harris at Half Hollow Hills West High School in Dix Hills, N.Y. on Long Island. A two-time All-State, All-Long Island and All-Conference recipient, Sledge averaged 25.3 points, 5.2 assists and 3.5 steals, and led Half Hollow Hills West to an 18-6 mark and a Class AA state semifinal appearance.
