Kyrie Irving, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, suffered a fractured hand Saturday and is expected to be out 6-8 weeks, according to the Akron Beacon-Journal.

“I’m a little disappointed for a freak accident like that,” Irving told the paper. “I have to be more responsible about my health. It was crazy. It happened so fast. That thing I did, hitting the padding on the wall, I’ve done it so many times. This time it was just a freak accident.”

The Cavaliers released a statement saying that Irving, the former Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick and Duke star, ”experienced a right hand fracture during today’s morning practice after slapping the padding on the wall at the practice site.

“X-rays taken in Las Vegas at Spring Valley Hospital confirmed the fracture. He will return to Cleveland and be evaluated Sunday at Cleveland Clinic Sports Health by Cavaliers Head Team Physician Dr. Richard Parker and Dr. Thomas Graham. His preliminary projection is to be ready for the start of training camp in late September, but his official status and timeline for return to play will be updated following his exam in Cleveland.”

This is Irving’s second injury in the last three years. He suffered a toe injury during his only season at Duke and played only 11 games for the Blue Devils as a freshman before entering the 2011 NBA Draft and being selected as the No. 1 overall pick.

Irving made news recently when he and Lakers star Kobe Bryant bet $50,000 on a hypothetical one-on-one game.

Now it looks like Irving will have to wait about two months to take on Kobe.

NEW YORK — St. Patrick High School is a tiny, red-brick Catholic school of about 150 students located in the rugged inner-city of Elizabeth, N.J.

Although it was supposed to close its doors for good after this school year due to financial struggles, school officials hope to keep it open by moving it to another, as yet undetermined location in the port city.

Yet if you take one look at the NBA Draft lottery in the last two years, you would have a hard time telling that St. Pat’s is in any kind of trouble.

A year ago, St. Pat’s product Kyrie Irving was the No. 1 overall pick of the Cleveland Cavaliers and went on to win NBA Rookie of the Year honors.

Sometime after 7:30 p.m. EST on Thursday, Irving’s former teammate, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, is expected to be chosen within the top three or four picks of this year’s NBA Draft, possibly as high as No. 2. At 18, Kidd-Gilchrist is the youngest player in the draft.

Appropriately enough, the draft at The Prudential Center in Newark will take place about 7 miles north of St. Pat’s on Route 1/9.

WHAT ARE THE ODDS?

So, what exactly are the odds of one tiny high school sending two players to the lottery — possibly as the No. 1 and 2 picks overall, respectively — in back-to-back years?

“You probably got a better chance of getting hit by a bullet [than] that happening odds-wise,” former St. Patrick coach Kevin Boyle, now the head coach at Montverde (Fla.) Academy, told SNY.tv.

“It’s just incredible. Even if it was [picks] 1-3, that’s just kind of incredible and I think it says a lot about the staff we had at St. Pat’s. But it also says a lot about Mike and Kyrie that they had the ability, they had the work ethic and we were just extremely thankful to them for their contributions to St. Pat’s over the years.”

And what do you think, Hall of Fame St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley, who served as Boyle’s rival for 20-something years?

“It’s astronomical, you couldn’t even calculate it,” Hurley said. “To put it in perspective, there are 20,000 high schools that have basketball in the United States. And you’re going to have in back-to-back years, a kid comes out of a particular school — and it’s not like it’s Oak Hill where kids come from all over the country.

“It’s a school like St. Anthony’s where the kids are regional. And it shows a lot about the level of basketball in this area that this has happened.”

What say you, ESPN college basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla?

“Well, if it happens at any other place besides St. Pat’s or St. Anthony’s, I’d be surprised and it would be statistically impossible,” Fraschilla told SNY.tv.

“But the fact that both guys are coming out of a place where they played at a very high level of high school basketball for a terrific coach in a hotbed like Northern New Jersey, it actually makes sense.”

“It seems like Kyrie came out of nowhere but once he got to St. Pat’s, he certainly jumped onto the national map.

“And MKG was always headed in that direction anway. So their bloodlines from St. Pat’s to Duke and Kentucky and now off to the lottery, actually it all makes sense.”

What do you think the odds are, St. Pat’s principal Joe Picaro?

“I think that it’s almost impossible,” Picaro said. “So the odds of it are astounding. And think about this, though, you also have Al Harrington and Sam Dalembert [in the NBA from St. Pat's] and there’s only about, what, 400 people that play in the NBA? [450 actually] And if you take 4 into 400 I think that’s 1 percent of the players in the NBA from one little school.”

“I’m so happy for the players,” Picaro added. “They deserve it. You know how Mike and Kyrie are, their personalities and what good people they are, so for them to be 1 and 2 [potentially] in consecutive years is certainly an indication of how well the program developed good players and good men.”

DIFFERENT PATHS TO ST. PATS

The son of former professional player Drederick Irving, Kyrie transferred to St. Pat’s midway through his high school career from Montclair Kimberley and soon exploded onto the national scene.

After Irving, Gilchrist (as he was then known) and current North Carolina guard Dexter Strickland led the Celtics to the 2009 New Jersey Tournament of Champions title, Boyle told SNY.tv that Irving had the potential to be the best guard ever to come out of New Jersey.

And that’s a group that included Bobby Hurley, Jay Williams and DaJuan Wagner.

“I think he needed a little push,” Boyle said of Irving. “I think him being at St. Pat’s was very good for him. He needed to get with other good players to try and start understanding, ‘Hey, you gotta take over. You gotta step up. You gotta be more assertive. You can’t sit back and wait for things to happen. You’re too talented. You’re too gifted. The plays have to go through you.”

After an injury-shortened season at Duke, Irving went No. 1 in last year’s draft and soon paid the Cavs back with a rookie season in which he averaged 18.5 points and 5.4 assists and was the lone unanimous choice for the All-Rookie Team.

After Irving left St. Pat’s in 2010, Kidd-Gilchrist took over the mantle.

“Mike was able to take over that spot the folowing year and show some great leadership,” Boyle said.

Kidd-Gilchrist made a daily 154-mile commute from his home in Somerdale, N.J., to Elizabeth, leaving home with his mother, Cindy Richardson, at 5 a.m. each morning and arriving back home at 8 p.m.

As part of his daily life at St. Pat’s, Kidd-Gilchrist received daily therapy for his stutter, which is now much improved and allows him to speak more comfortably in public.

“That was my life,” Richardson told the Philadelphia Inquirer of the commute. “But he was so happy. When you see a kid happy and being positive, you can’t say no.”

Kidd-Gilchrist went to Kentucky and helped a team loaded with freshmen and sophomores win John Calipari’s first national championship. Six players from that team are expected to be drafted on Thursday.

“Michael definitely gets it,” Calipari told the Philly Inquirer. “Before the SEC championship game, he asked if he could come off the bench because he thought Darius Miller might play better if he started. He’s an unselfish kid with a great, great work ethic.”

THE TENUOUS FUTURE OF ST. PAT’S

While Irving and Kidd-Gilchrist are emblems of St. Pat’s successful past, the school’s future remains in serious doubt.

Picaro said the school is attempting to move to another location, either Kean College or another undisclosed location in Elizabeth, even as enrollment has dropped by more than 100 students in the last five years.

“We don’t have an address yet but we’re definitely going to be open in September,” Picaro said. “We’ve had registration going on and if people are interested they need to hurry because we think we’re going to have a waiting list.”

Asked his thoughts on his school’s attempt to stay open, Kidd-Gilchrist said at the Final Four in New Orleans: “I was raised there basically, but yeah, it’s going to mean a whole bunch for me and Kyrie and stuff like that [if it stays open]. It’s going to mean a whole bunch.”

While St. Pat’s attempts to stay afloat, two of its most successful products are keeping the school’s name prominent as potential future stars in the NBA.

And it’s even possible they could end up being teammates if Kidd-Gilchrist falls to the Cavaliers at No. 4.

“Kyrie’s a very good pro and he’s going to be a great pro,” Boyle said.

“And it wouldn’t shock me if they’re both in the All-Star game together one day.”

NEW YORK — A year ago, Kyrie Irving was the consensus No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.

This time around, Irving was on hand at the NBA Draft Lottery only as an interested bystander. Decked out in a black suit and bow tie, the NBA Rookie of the Year was hoping his Cleveland Cavaliers would defy the odds and land a second straight No. 1 pick even though they entered in the No. 3 slot.

Instead, the Cavs will pick at No. 4, behind New Orleans, Charlotte and Washington.

“My stomach was twisting [Wednesday],” Irving, the former Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick and Duke star, said after the Draft Lottery. “I wanted the No. 1 pick…I was a little nervous.”

With Kentucky star Anthony Davis a foregone conclusion to go No. 1 to the Hornets in the June 28 NBA Draft, there will be a drop-off after that.

DraftExpress.com projects that the Cavaliers will select Florida freshman guard Bradley Beal at No. 4 after the Bobcats take Kansas’ Thomas Robinson at and the Wizards select Kentucky’s Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who played at St. Pat’s alongside Irving.

If Kidd-Gilchrist is still on the board at No. 4, the two former Celtics stars could be teammates in Cleveland, which also features former St. Benedict’s Prep standouts Samardo Samuels and Tristan Thompson.

“I have no idea who we’re picking,” Irving said. “Do you have any idea who we’re picking? I have no idea. Maybe we should exchange numbers and you can tell me who.”

Whatever happens, Irving has a busy summer ahead.

He was invited to play with the USA Select team against Team USA and will be in Las Vegas from July 5-22. The Select Team also features Knicks guard Jeremy Lin and former Kentucky stars John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins.

After a summer of ball with those guys under the coaching of Syracuse coach Mike Hopkins, Irving plans to be a more vocal presence next year with the Cavs.

“I just work hard and I just try to lead by example every single day and that’s all I’m going to continue to do,” Irving said. “But I’m going to be a lot more vocal next year. I’ll have to assume that role and continue to work hard on it and see where it goes. I’m really excited for the summer and really excited for our draft pick.”

Irving is also excited about his Pepsi MAX “Uncle Drew” commercial, which has now drawn nearly 7 million viewers on YouTube.

“It was awesome,” he said. “I was in makeup for four hours, which was unbelievable. And then having the response that I’ve gotten it’s been amazing.”

Irving said he and the creative folks at Pepsi teamed up to make the ad — in which he plays crotchety old-time basketball player “Uncle Drew” — come to life.

“It was just an idea that we came up with the at the same time,” he said. “It was interesting and they made it happen.”

Asked if he’s working on a sequel to the ad, which was filmed in Bloomfield, N.J., Irving said, “Yes, Uncle Drew will be making a few more appearances. I’m not sure where but he will be in another video.”

If you haven’t yet seen this Pepsi MAX commercial featuring NBA Rookie of the Year and St. Patrick High School alum Kyrie Irving, check it out.

Irving follows in the footsteps of Larry Johnson as “Grandmama” in a Converse sneaker ad and LeBron James as “The LeBrons” in a Nike commercial among Rookies of the Year with their own commercials.

Irving’s acting skills shouldn’t come as a shock. He starred in a version of Disney’s High School Musical while at St. Pat’s.

Drederick Irving, Kyrie’s dad and a former pro in Australia, even makes a cameo on the sidelines.

Kyrie Irving, who began his high school basketball career at tiny Montclair (N.J.) Kimberley Academy and finished up at powerhouse St. Patrick, will be named the NBA Rookie of the Year, according to reports.

Irving, who led all first-year players in scoring at 18.5 points per game, will receive the award Tuesday, the AP reported.

“I would imagine it’s something you dream about as a kid working out with all the time and effort you put in,” former St. Patrick and current Montverde (Fla.) Academy coach Kevin Boyle told SNY.tv. ”He was blessed with some talent but what people don’t realize is he’s an example of a guy who really loves to play and really worked hard. He put a lot of time in the gym.

“I try to use him as example,” Boyle added. “A lot of the guys think it’s just going to happen and they want the awards and the praise but a lot of guys don’t understand the countless hours spent in the gym. Kyrie actually understood that and I think he actually enjoys it.”

For financially strapped St. Patrick, which is trying to remain open at another location next year, the award is a milestone.

“Anytime an alumni achieves a moment of greatnesss it only reflects proudly and greatly on the school that they came from,” Boyle said.

ESPN.com and The Cleveland Plain Dealer first reported Irving’s win.

Results of the voting won’t be available until Tuesday, but it’s safe to assume Irving’s victory will be lopsided. After Minnesota guard Ricky Rubio suffered a season-ending knee injury, Irving was far and away the best all-around player in the rookie class.

The Cavs used the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft to select Irving, who played in just 11 games as a freshman at Duke because of a toe injury. However, it didn’t take long for the 6-foot-3 Irving to establish himself as one of the game’s rising stars.

With a fearlessness on the floor, Irving made clutch shots, orchestrated fourth-quarter comebacks and managed to keep the Cavs competitive and in the playoff picture for several months before they traded guard Ramon Sessions in March and injuries took their toll.

Irving is the second Cavaliers player to win the award, joining LeBron James in 2004.

Irving’s is the final postseason award to be announced by the league.

Irving recently treated himself to a postseason vacation in the Bahamas. In June, he’s expected to play on the Cavs summer league team in Las Vegas and will be part of a U.S. Select Team which will train against the American Olympic team going to the London Games.

(The AP contributed)

Kyrie Irving won’t play for Australia this summer in the London Olympics and said he hopes to be a part of Team USA for 2016.

Yet Irving clarified earlier remarks about Team USA Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s future, saying he’s not certain if Coach K will lead the Americans four years from now.

“I spoke to Coach K [and] he did tell me he was coaching, but I prematurely spoke on that,” Irving, who played for Coach K at Duke last season, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “But I know he’s going to be part of USA Basketball. That’s the most important thing. That’s what made my decision easier.

“He’s going to be part of the USA staff anyway whether he’s coaching or not. That way it’s easy for me.”

Irving, the former Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick star, was born in Australia because his father, Drederick, was playing pro ball there. He maintains dual citizenship with the U.S. and Australia.

On Monday, he announced he wouldn’t play for Australia this year because he “found out Coach K would be coaching in 2016,” the Plain-Dealer reported.

Irving, 19, will continue to play for the U.S. Select Team and hopes to join the National Team for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

Jerry Colangelo, chairman of USA Basketball, told ESPN there have been no discussions about naming a future coach.

“I kind of disappointed my Aussie fans,” Irving said. “It’s all about the future. It’s always been a dream of mine to play in the Olympics. It’s a good feeling to know I’m going to play for my country.”

NEW YORK — Kyrie Irving is actively working to help his alma mater, Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick, out financially, but Al Harrington and Sam Dalembert are not, Celtics head coach Chris Chavannes told SNY.tv.

“We have faith that Kyrie will help St. Patrick,” Chavannes said, referring to the Cavaliers rookie point guard and the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s NBA Draft. “They have been very pro-active.”

The same is not true of St. Patrick alums Harrington, whom St. Pat’s principal Joe Picaro used to drive to school, and Dalembert, Chavannes said.

“Since they have been in the league, a number of consistent people who donate [to St. Patrick] have stopped because they all are under the assumption that these alums are giving back in a variety of ways,” Chavannes said.

Chavannes said St. Patrick — featured in the recent HBO documentary “Prayer For a Perfect Season” — is not in danger of closing but is in need of financial support.

“Our tuition is $5,500 and the cost to educate each child is $7,500,” he said. “In order to continue to give a quality education we need to raise the difference.”

After Harrington, now with the Denver Nuggets, scored 24 points Saturday night to help beat the Knicks, 119-114 in double-OT, I asked him if he or his foundation had donated anything to St. Patrick, where Harrington played under former coach Kevin Boyle.

“Not as of right now,” Harrington said. “But at the end of the day they’re part of the Archdiocese of Newark so they got more money than Al Harrington has, so they probably should step up and help those struggling schools. You know, St. Pat’s ain’t the only school struggling.”

He added: “I’m just saying it’s a Catholic school. They should help those schools out also. But I guess I heard there’s a lot of other things they’re dealing with outside of, that they’re spending their money on. So they should help them schools out because those schools really help and save a lot of kids’ lives.”

The Catholic church has had to spend money paying off sex abuse cases.

Harrington said St. Pat’s has not been in touch, but he would be willing to help fundraise for the school.

“They haven’t reached out to me yet,” he said. “I mean, I would help anything with fundraising. I think that instead of any school just asking for money, they should come with cute ways to get us involved ot help raise money instead of just asking for a check.

“I’m not saying that’s what they’re doing, but I think that would definitely help. But if they wanted to do something like that, I would do anything they need me to do.”

Chavannes said he and other school officials did try to reach out to Harrington but to no avail.

“We are happy to hear Al is willing to help with fundraisers because we had no idea he was still interesting in helping out,” Chavannes said. “As he said, he has not been in touch, his foundation has not given, he has not given in six years. It has been impossible to get in touch. We tried through his brother on Facebook.

“So this is very good, refreshing news because we are not expecting it, based on the previous evidence.”

As for Dalembert, now with the Sacramento Kings, Chavannes said he donated $7,000 “after his first year in the league,” but nothing since.

Marc Cornstein, Dalembert’s agent, did not respond to a request for comment.

Irving, in contrast, has offered to help the school, as first reported by SNY.tv in October.

“Kyrie and his dad [Drederick] are helping with the restructuring of the school,” Chavannes said. “They have already helped with fundraising and have committed to helping St. Patrick in a variety of ways.”

Kyrie Irving returned to his alma mater Tuesday night and he brought more than his jaw-dropping basketball skills.

He brought some valuable lessons for the young St. Patrick players as well as a promise to donate some of his earnings to the struggling Catholic school.

“He’s very, very helpful in so many ways,” St. Patrick coach Chris Chavannes told SNY.tv. “And he’s made his promise to also help out the school financially in the very, very near future.”

Irving, the No. 1 pick of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2011 NBA Draft, has not yet received his first NBA paycheck because of the lockout but he is currently shooting a Nike commercial, which would allow him to donate to his alma mater.

Irving attended a dinner and fundraiser that coincided with the HBO broadcast of “Prayer For a Perfect Season,” which documents St. Patrick’s 2010-11 season that culminated in a loss to arch-rival St. Anthony in the mythical national championship game.

Chavannes said some 220 people attended the dinner at The Westwood in Garwood, N.J., and that it raised more than $8,000 for the school.

“I think it shows that there’s many ways to give back and just [Irving's] presence alone drew a lot of people there, to the point where some people didn’t have seats to enjoy the festivities,” Chavannes said.

Among other things, “Prayer” highlights the financial struggles of Catholic schools like St. Patrick, with an enrollment of 215 students.

“I’m painfully aware of what’s happened to Catholic education,” Naismith Hall of Fame St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley said during the film. “I think my least concern right now as a coach here is my preparation for games. I think my biggest concern is my preparation for fund-raising.

“In the Catholic church, we are settling lawsuits throughout the diocese, all over the United States, with the religious and the sexual abuse cases, which has really taken away any reserve of money that would’ve normally been used to keep schools open.”

Irving, who left Duke after his freshman season, also served as a valuable role model for the current St. Patrick players because he is back taking four courses at Duke during the lockout.

“I love Duke,” Irving told CBS News during a recent interview. “I’m back here because I love it. You know, because Duke is the place.”

The CBS piece pointed out that Irving is one of 52 current NBA players currently taking college courses. Others include former St. Benedict’s Prep standout Tristan Thompson (Texas), Steph Curry (Davidson) and Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook (UCLA).

Irving, who along with Dexter Strickland (North Carolina) and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Kentucky), helped St. Pat’s win the 2009 New Jersey Tournament of Champions title, made a promise to his father upon leaving Duke early that he would get his degree within five years.

“And he stuck to the pact and I commend him for being so young and having the fortitude to actually stick to the game plan,” Drederick Irving told CBS.

Chavannes, who took over for departed coach Kevin Boyle, now at Montverde (Fla.) Academy, says Irving’s decision to return to his alma mater can only have a positive impact on the current players.

“It showed the guys that there’s many ways [to help],” Chavannes said. “He comes back to open gyms and….gives them advice and shows them those Duke ways of doing certain things, whether it be from a basketball standpoint or from a leadership standpoint.”

ELIZABETH, N.J. — Only a handful of onlookers were there Monday evening when Kyrie Irving drained four straight 3-pointers, two from midcourt, in the bandbox that is the St. Patrick High School gym.

“He’s shooting the shot from halfcourt like it was [nothing],” said Darrian Collins, a rising 5-foot-9 junior guard from St. Pat’s.

“It hit the rim, though,” joked another onlooker, underscoring the fact that one of Irving’s long-distance shots wasn’t a perfect midcourt swish.

The 6-foot-3 Irving (wearing blue shorts and a white T-shirt in the video) was the No. 1 pick of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Draft this summer, but on this night he was just another one of the guys. One of the many talented former and current Celtics playing pickup in the school’s tiny gym.

“It’s great coming back to St. Pat’s,” Irving, who, along with North Carolina guard Dexter Strickland and Kentucky wing Michael Gilchrist, helped St. Patrick win the New Jersey Tournament of Champions in 2009, told SNY.tv. “St. Pat’s gave me a lot, basket-wise, academically, so it’s always good to come back and play.

“And it’s good just to get a few shots up here with the guys and support them.”

Strickland, a two guard on the preseason No. 1-ranked team in the nation, was also at Monday’s run, and he and Irving playfully pushed and shoved one another while running on opposing teams.

The game also featured Rutgers guard Eli Carter, St. Bonaventure forward Da’Quan Cook, George Mason forward Paris Bennett and many of the current St. Pat’s players, including the team’s two most talented players, junior wings Deandre Bembry and Jared Nickens.

Few high school basketball programs in the country can produce an impromptu alumni game of this quality. And consider that St. Pat’s alums like Gilchrist, Corey Fisher, Shaheen Holloway, Sam Dalembert and Al Harrington weren’t even there on this night.

“It’s great talent, it’s great talent,” Irving said. “We’re just enjoying ourselves out here, that’s it.”

For a young guy like Collins, the run provided an opportunity to test himself against the No.1 pick in the draft. At one point, the sharp-shooting, diminutive Collins drained a 3-pointer over Irving’s head. On another play, Irving schooled the youngster by driving past Collins for a layup.

“Yeah, it is fun, to know that he is No. 1 and you get to play against him,” said Collins, a South River, N.J. native. “It’s competitive. You get to work on playing defense against top players.”

First-year St. Pat’s coach Chris Chavannes, who takes over a team that was ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of last season before losing to St. Anthony in the New Jersey state tournament, said the young players will benefit from playing against Irving and the other guys.

“One thing that Jared has to learn is how to have confidence in himself and how to learn to become the man,” Chavannes said. “We as coaches can express that to them, but to hear it from Kyrie and Dexter and these other guys, it means a ton. Especially, they’re closer to their age also, so it’s been very , very helpful in so many ways.”

Irving and several other alums drove down to Allentown, N.J. on Saturday to watch the current team play in the Summer Primetime Shootout, where the Celtics went a perfect 4-0.

“Yeah, they drove all the way down there in the rain to come sit down and watch our guys play,” Chavannes said. “And he didn’t have to do that, the other guys didn’t have to do that. So it means a lot for him to come back here and give back, whether it’s playing against the guys or coming down and sitting in the stands and supporting us. It’s been tremendous.”

Even as Irving made a behind-the-back, out-of-bounds pass to Bennett for a breakaway dunk, he was treated as just another player in the gym.

Of course, everyone in the game knew he was the No. 1 pick in the draft, but on this night he was running with many of his former high school teammates as if it were a another St. Pat’s practice two years ago before his one and only season at Duke.

“I think that’s what makes St. Pat’s special,” Chavannes said. “If you ever come through the halls of St. Pat’s during the daytime, nobody cares who Kyrie or [former coach] Kevin Boyle was. Everybody’s the same. Everybody just likes each other and gets along with each other.”

Of course, Irving is not the same.

He’s the No. 1 pick in the draft, but because of the NBA lockout he’s currently without a paycheck or a team.

Asked if that was a weird feeling, he said, “Yeah, a little bit. knowing that I’m not getting paid right now and I can’t work out with teammates so it’s hard to think about.”

Irving said he plans to split time between New Jersey to Cleveland during the NBA lockout.

“Most likely I’m just going to be back and forth to Cleveland and getting acclimated there,” he said.

In the meantime, he left Wednesday for a 16-hour flight to Shanghai, China where he and Grant Hill will watch Duke participate in some exhibitions there.

Once he returns, Irving could drop in for a few more runs in his old gym, where he’ll just be another St. Patrick Celtic.

“It’s all competition,” he said. “It’s always in good fun.”
