Kevin Boyle finally has his first national championship.

After losing back-to-back national championship games in 2011 and 2012, Boyle led Montverde (FL) Academy to a thrilling 67-65 victory over St. Benedict’s Prep in the ESPN National High School Invitational championship game at Georgetown Prep in North Bethesda, MD.

“It means so much…coming out here and winning a national championship,” Kentucky-bound big man Dakari Johnson, who played for Boyle as a freshman at St. Patrick when they lost the mythical national championship game to Bob Hurley and St. Anthony, said on ESPN after putting up 18 points and eight rebounds in the win.

“And I’m going to win a national championship at Kentucky next year.”

Boyle won five New Jersey Tournament of Champions titles at St. Patrick, but never a national championship there. He left the school following the 2010-11 season to come to Montverde, and Johnson soon followed.

Montverde (24-2) trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half but stormed back to outscore St. Benedict’s, 26- 16 in the fourth period. St. Ben’s (32-2) led 36-22 at the break.

After Syracuse-bound Tyler Ennis put St. Benedict’s up 65-64 with a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left, Florida signee Kasey Hill kicked the ball out to Jalyn Patterson, who won the game with a 3-pointer from the right wing.

It was Patterson’s first field goal of the day, and it won the championship for Montverde, which blew a huge second-half lead to Findlay Prep in last year’s final.

“Us hitting a trey to take a lead and them coming down to hit a three to win it at the buzzer – you couldn’t have scripted it any better,” said St. Benedict’s coach Mark Taylor, who has gone 67-5 in his two years at the school after taking over a 13-12 club. “Unfortunately, we came out on the wrong end today.

“I’m so proud of this team. They did everything we asked of the all year and more. I really felt we were going to win it when Tyler hit his three. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Hill finished with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists.

“He means so much,” Johnson said. “He was cramping up before we got here at McDonald’s, but I was just telling that him we gotta suck it up and win this national championship. And that’s what we did.”

Montverde won despite shooting 9-for-21 from the stripe, while St. Benedict’s went 15-for-24.

Despite a sprained right shoulder suffered on a first-haf collision with super sophomore Ben Simmons, Ennis finished with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists in his final high school game before becoming the starting point guard at Syracuse next season.

Pittsburgh-bound Mike Young scored a team-best 19 points and grabbed 11 boards for St. Benedict’s (31-2). Isaiah Briscoe added 11 points for the Gray Bees.

During this magical season for the Gray Bees, they snapped St. Anthony’s 83-game winning streak earlier this year and Findlay Prep’s 54-game streak in the semifinals.

A putback dunk by Simmons put Montverde up for the first time in the second half, 61-60, before Ennis answered with a floater in the lane for a 62-61 St. Benedict’s lead.

Johnson answered with three-point play to give Montverde the lead back at 64-62.

Then Ennis hit his three before Patterson ensure Boyle his elusive national championship.

Dakari Johnson is the lone Kentucky commit on the McDonald’s All-American East roster.

Four of his future teammates are on the West squad in the game set for April 3 at Chicago’s United Center.

The way Johnson figures it, the organizers may just have been afraid to put all five future Wildcats on the same team for fear of the havoc they might wreak.

Kentucky and coach John Calipari have the top-ranked recruiting class in the nation.

“I guess they didn’t want the world to see what all five of us could do on the court at the same time,” Johnson, a 6-foot-10 center from Montverde (Fla.) Academy, joked to SNY.tv.

Johnson’s future Kentucky teammates, Andrew and Aaron Harrison, Marcus Lee and James Young, are all on the West side, as is uncommitted forward Aaron Gordon of Archbishop Mitty (Calif.), who is considering Kentucky, Arizona, Oregon and Washington.

If Gordon hasn’t decided by the time of the game, his four Kentucky-bound teammates may try to sway him. (Washington-bound point guard Nigel Williams-Goss is also on the West team.)

The East team, meantime, will also feature uncommitted forward Andrew Wiggins of Huntington (W.V.) Prep, who is considering Kentucky along with Florida State, Kansas and North Carolina and plans to announce in April. Johnson can try to whisper in his ear, while East teammate Wayne Selden can tell him about Kansas’s virtues.

Johnson is a former Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick standout who followed coach Kevin Boyle to Montverde. The good news is that he will team with Florida-bound teammate Kasey Hill on the East team.

“It feels great to make the McDonald’s Game,” Johnson said. “It’s been a dream of mine since I was young and making it is really big and a huge accomplishment.

“It will feel good to play with my brother, Kasey Hill. I’m used to playing with him so it’s great they teamed us together; and to compete against my future teammates will be interesting because I know we all like to compete but it should be fun and a great experience.”

Ten days after the McDonald’s Game, Johnson and his four future Kentucky teammates will play in the Jordan Brand Classic at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Ironically, there he will team on the West squad with Andrew Harrison, Young and Lee, while Aaron Harrison will be the lone Kentucky commit on the East.

“In the Jordan Game, it will be fun because I will get a chance to play with three of my future teammates and get used to their games and just create chemistry,” Johnson said.

Between the two All-Star games, the five Kentucky commits should get a good chance to bond and learn about one another on and off the court.

“It will be good hanging around those guys because we will not only get to play with and against each other on the court but we’ll get to hang out and know each other off the court,” he said. “That will be cool.”

Asked about Nerlens Noel’s ACL injury and how strong Kentucky could be next season should Noel opt to return to campus and forego the NBA Draft, Johnson said:

“I don’t know about Nerlens’ situation,” he said. “That is his decision to make, but he is a great and very talented player so I have no doubt he will make the best decision for him.

“But it would be cool to play with him if he decides to come, but ultimately that is up to him.”

Kevin Boyle will lose Dakari Johnson, Kasey Hill and Devin Williams to college next year, but the Montverde (Fla.) Academy coach is adding a 2015 star in Ben Simmons, a 6-foot-8 small forward from the Australian Institute of Sport in Melbourne.

“Ben Simmons, the best player in the world under 18, will be at our school next week,” Boyle told reporters in Wheeling, W.V. Saturday night, according to this video from the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Dave Telep of ESPN.com reported the news Friday, adding that Dave Simmons, Ben’s father and an Oklahoma City, Okla., native, wants his son to attend college in the U.S.

“The primary reason he’s coming to the United States…is to get in college,” Boyle said. “Obviously, you gotta be qualified for the NCAA.”

Boyle joked that he expected Simmons to play in Saturday’s 82-53 rout of Duke-bound Jabari Parker and Chicago Simeon.

“He’s supposed to play [Saturday],” Boyle joked, before adding:

“We’re part of the high school state association in Florida so I don’t even know the state rule on that [whether he is eligible this season].

“I would think it’s probably in his best interests to get comfortable in school and work on academics.”

He added: “If it’s up to me, it would probably be best to wait until the next campaign [2013-14].”

Simmons will join 2014 guard D’Angelo Russell among Montverde’s top players next season.

As for the 6-4 Russell, who put up 21 points in Thursday’s win over Roselle Catholic, Boyle said Ohio State, Indiana, Missouri and Louisville were among those recruiting him the hardest. Russell is a Louisville native, and Boyle said he — Boyle — is a big fan of Louisville coach Rick Pitino.

“He’s definitely a top 10 talent in the country and now if he can match that top 10 intensity, then he’s going to be a big-time player at a big-time school and he’s going in the right direction,” Boyle said.

Montverde (Fla.) Academy and Huntington (W.V.) Prep are in talks to play one another March 2 or 3 in a game that would feature Kentucky-bound big man Dakari Johnson against Kentucky target Andrew Wiggins.

“I think it’s pretty sure,” Montverde coach Kevin Boyle said Saturday after his team pounded Duke commit Jabari Parker and Chicago Simeon, 82-53,, according to hthoops.com. “Until we get the contact in the mail, you never know.”

Montverde is currently No. 1 in the ESPN 25 Power Rankings, and Montverde is No. 3.

The 6-foot-8 Wiggins went for 29 points and 11 rebounds Saturday in a 45-41 win over Wesleyan Christian. The No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2013, is considering Kentucky, Florida State and North Carolina, among others.

Huntington has several Division 1 commits, including Florida State-bound shooting guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes, Baylor-bound center Dominic Woodson, Arkansas-bound center Moses Kingsley and Tennessee-bound point guard Travon Landry.

Montverde also features Florida-bound point guard Kasey Hill, West Virginia-bound forward Devin Williams and uncommitted 2014 guard D’Angelo Russell.

By ADAM ZAGORIA & SEVE COUSINS

Dakari Johnson pledged to Kentucky Saturday night as Coach John Calipari and the Wildcats took another step toward assembling arguably the greatest recruiting class in the history of college basketball.

With the addition of the 6-foot-11 center from Montverde (Fla.) Academy, Kentucky now has the Nos. 3, 5, 6, 12 and 30 players in the 2013 ESPN 100.

They remain in the mix for the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 7 players as well in Andrew Wiggins, Julius Randle and Aaron Gordon -- all of whom will sign in the spring.

“If they land any combo of those guys it will be without a doubt one of the greatest classes of all time,” one veteran NBA scout told SNY.tv Saturday.

As things now stand, Johnson becomes the sixth member of a class that includes point guard Andrew Harrison (No. 3), shooting guard Aaron Harrison (No. 5), shooting guard James Young (No. 6 ) and power forward Marcus Lee (No. 30), as well as power forward Derek Willis.

“Coach Cal, Coach O [Orlando Antigua] and Coach [Kenny] Payne were honest with me; they told me this is a place where I’m going to have to come in and work hard,” Johnson, who reclassified to 2013 from 2014, said on ESPNU after picking Kentucky over Georgetown and Syracuse. “I want to win a national championship in high school and in college.”

Johnson, a Brooklyn native and onetime teammate of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist at St. Patrick, is the second Kevin Boyle-coached player to commit to Calipari in three years. Kidd-Gilchrist, the first, was the No. 2 player selected in last year’s NBA Draft.

The top-ranked center in the ESPN rankings, Johnson is the first true low-post presence in Calipari’s heralded 2013 class. They now effectively have at least one player at every position.

“Kentucky can expect a hard worker and a good person on and off the court,” said Johnson, whose top-ranked Montverde team crushed Duke-bound Jabari Parker and Chicago Simeon, 82-53, earlier on ESPN2.

Kentucky currently has 7-footers Nerlens Noel and Willie Cauley-Stein on its roster, but Noel is projected as a top lottery pick in June’s NBA Draft. DraftExpress.com currently has him ranked No. 2 on its Mock Draft.

Some NBA scouts believe that the 7-foot-1 Cauley-Stein actually has a bigger upside going forward than Noel.

If Noel and / or Cauley-Stein opt to stay at Kentucky for the 2013-14 season, the frontcourt will be even more crowded.

Still, Johnson said he spoke with Calipari about that possibility and is OK with it.

“He’s going to get close to a double-double and he’s going to be picked in the Top 10 [of the NBA Draft] after one year because of the potential he has to be an outstanding player,” Boyle told reporters in this video from Wheeling, W.V.

Asked if Johnson was definitely a one-and-done player at Kentucky, Boyle added:

“I think there’s going to be too much pressure on him not to be.”

One thing’s for sure, NBA scouts will be spending quite a bit of time next season in Lexington with all the talent Kentucky has amassed.

“Some teams will be renting apartments next to Rupp Arena,” the NBA scout told SNY.tv.

“Kentucky has established itself as the top destination in college basketball for all NBA personnel to determine just how good the lottery is based on their talent each and every year,” a second NBA scout said.

Johnson picked Kentucky in part because it is most familiar to him.

He spent his middle schools years at the Sayre School in Lexington and still has extended family there, something that is important to Johnson’s mother, Makini Campbell.

Calipari nailed down the pledge this week by appearing at Montverde’s games Friday and Saturday at the Cancer Research Classic in Wheeling, W.V.

Longtime Calipari confidante William Wesley, known as “Worldwide Wes,” also was on hand Thursday when Montverde beat Roselle Catholic in New Jersey.

The 6-foot-8 Wiggins also played at the event with Huntington (W.V.) Prep and is expected to pick between Kentucky, Florida State and possibly North Carolina in the spring. (Kansas, Syracuse and Ohio State are also in the mix.)

The 6-9 Randle is down to Kentucky, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Kansas and N.C. State and has visits planned to N.C. State later this month and to Texas and Kansas in February.

The 6-8 Gordon is considering Washington, Arizona and Kentucky.

Dakari Johnson will make his college announcement tonight.

The 6-foot-11 big man from Montverde (Fla.) Academy will choose among Kentucky, Georgetown and Syracuse and announce at halftime of the Gonzaga (D.C.) vs. Salesian (Calif.) game at 8 p.m. ET on ESPNU, according to Paul Biancardi.

Johnson and Montverde will play Duke-bound Jabari Parker and Chicago Simeon at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Ironically, Johnson is down to the same three schools that current Kentucky freshman Nerlens Noel had on his final list.

Johnson told SNY.tv this week while in New Jersey that even if Noel and fellow freshman Willie Cauley-Stein stay at Kentucky and don’t enter the NBA Draft, he could play with the Wildcats.

“I talked to Coach Cal and it wouldn’t matter to me, even if they stayed they would push me harder in practice and I would just be better developed going against those guys every day,” he said.

Kentucky coach John Calipari and his staff watched Johnson play Friday night and is expected to watch Montverde play tonight, Dave Telep reported.

Johnson has a family connection to Kentucky, having spent several years there in middle school.

“As a parent, with you not being there in the same place as your child, you always want, kids always say, ‘I have an aunt there’ or ‘I have an uncle there,’ there’s someone to kind of look after him,” Johnson’s mother, Makini Campbell, told SNY.tv in November. “So that’s comforting for me, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it might be the best fit for him, but I think that will definitely have an appeal for him.”

Should he pick the Wildcats, it would add to an already impressive 2013 class that includes Aaron and Andrew Harrison, James Young, Marcus Lee and Derek Willis. The Wildcats remain in the mix for 2013 late signees Andrew Wiggins, whom Calipari also watched Friday, and Julius Randle.

Meantime, Georgetown coach John Thompson III was in the building at Roselle Catholic Thursday night to watch Johnson. Even though the Hoyas just landed UCLA transfer Josh Smith, who becomes eligible in December, they are still in the mix for Johnson.

“Roy Hibbert, Greg Monroe, all of them their just so great, so developed and very skilled, “Johnson said of Georgetown’s tradition of big men.

Syracuse assistant Adrian Autry has been recruiting Johnson since middle school, but Johnson’s mother previously told SNY.tv she had concerns about the number of big men Syracuse had on its roster and coming in for 2013.

“I watched them ever since I was growing up in New York City,” Johnson told SNY.tv. “It’s a great school, and they have a great coach in Jim Boeheim.”

Special to ZAGSBLOG

ROSELLE, N.J. – Dakari Johnson and Kevin Boyle’s first visit to the Garden State after two years was a success.

Montverde (Fl.) Academy defeated St. Peter’s Prep (N.J.), 89-62, in the Holiday Hoops for Troops event at Roselle Catholic.

From the onset, Montverde, ranked the No. 1 team in the Nation by ESPN.com, lived up to the hype.

Johnson, the No. 1 center in the country, was a dominant force and finished with 16 points, even while sitting out the fourth quarter.

“It felt great to come home and play because my family really wanted to see me play live,” said the 6-foot-11 big man, who has narrowed his college choices to Kentucky, Syracuse and Georgetown.

“It was really cool for my family to come see me and I was very excited to play.”

Top-ranked Montverde also received big contributions from West Virginia-bound power forward Devin Williams (17 points), uncommitted 2014 guard D’Angelo Russell (13) and Florida-bound point guard Kasey Hill (10). Trevis Wyche lead St. Peter’s with 23.

The second homecoming of the night belonged to Boyle, the fiery head coach who led St. Patrick to five New Jersey Tournament of Champions titles during his 23-year tenure that ended when the took the Montverde job in 2011.

During his tenure at St. Pat’s, Boyle served as a foil to Hall of Fame St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley and coached the likes of Al Harrington (Orlando Magic), Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers) and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Charlotte Bobcats)

“It was different, I was happy to come back and see a lot of family and friends.” Boyle said. “I wasn’t overly happy with the way we defended tonight but I think they’ll turn it up tomorrow. “ Thursday night Montverde will face off against host team Roselle Catholic in the marquee game of the event.

Roselle Catholic is led by Syracuse-bound forward Tyler Roberson and 2015 wing Malachi Richardson, who has already received offers from Indiana, Miami and Cincinnati, among others.

Johnson is the top unsigned center in America and is coming off winning MVP honors at the City of Palms Classic.

His college list is now identical to that of the previous No.1 center in the country, Kentucky freshman Nerlens Noel.

Noel has teamed up with fellow freshman center Willie Cauley-Stein with the unranked Wildcats.

Johnson, who spent his middle school years in Lexington, Ky., spoke with SNY.tv about the possibility of playing with both Noel and Cauley-Stein or replacing them if they head to the NBA.

“I talked to Coach Cal and it wouldn’t matter to me, even if they stayed they would push me harder in practice and I would just be better developed going against those guys every day,” he said.

Johnson also pointed out that he has paid close attention to the development of the Georgetown big men, from Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning to Roy Hibbert and Greg Monroe. The Hoyas just landed UCLA transfer Josh Smith, so it remains unclear if they will also have room for Johnson.

“Roy Hibbert, Greg Monroe, all of them their just so great, so developed and very skilled, “Johnson said.

Johnson and his teammates still have many tough games ahead, including contests against Duke-bound Jabari Parker and Chicago Simeon and UCLA-bound Al Freeman and Findlay Prep.

Right now Boyle and his troops appear to be the best team in the country and are capable of winning a mythical national championship.

“I just try to look to the next game; I think we’re good, we can beat anybody,” he said. “We’ve already proven that.

“We have a lot of tough games ahead of us we’ll see what happens.”

Now, nearly two years later they will make a triumphant return to the Garden State.

Boyle, Johnson and their Montverde (Fla.) Academy teammates are ranked No. 1 in the nation by ESPN after winning the prestigious City of Palms Classic. Their next stop after winning that event will be the Holiday Hoops for Troops event at Roselle (N.J.) Catholic Jan. 2-3.

“I feel good coming back to New Jersey,” the 6-foot-11 Johnson, who is considering Kentucky, Syracuse and Georgetown, told SNY.tv. “To go back home and see my friends and also my family, they will get to see me play so I am very excited.”

Montverde will face St. Peter’s Prep on Wednesday, and will then meet Syracuse-bound Tyler Roberson and Roselle Catholic on Thursday.

Montverde also features Florida-bound guard Kasey Hill, West Virginia-bound power forward Devin Williams and uncommitted 2014 shooting guard D’Angelo Russell, while RC also has 2015 wing Malachi Richardson, who holds offers from Indiana, Cincinnati and Miami, among others.

“I think Kevin wanted to come back to New Jersey to play this year, and it was a case that we were able to put together the type of event he wanted to be a part of and fit his schedule with Montverde,” RC coach Dave Boff told SNY.tv.

“I am glad [Coach Boyle] set these games,” Johnson said. “One, it added to our already tough schedule, and second, I will get to play in front of my family. They rarely get a chance to watch me play live so it will be very exciting for them as well.”

After Boyle took the Montverde job in April 2011, Johnson followed his coach a couple months later. He then learned he would have to sit out the 2011-12 season due to Florida transfer rules.

The Johnson who left New Jersey was more of a role player on the 2011 St. Pat’s team that also featured Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Derrick Gordon. The one who returns to Jersey is more of a dominant force. He had 10 points and 11 rebounds en route to MVP honors as Montverde beat Highland (Utah) Lone Peak in the City of Palms championship.

“Dakari is one of the top players in the country and has been for sometime,” Boff said. “I think people will be interested to see his development over the past year.”

Originally a member of the Class of 2014, he has since reclassified to 2013 and trimmed his list to the aforementioned three schools, the same three schools to which current Kentucky freshman center Nerlens Noel cut his list before picking the Wildcats.

Johnson says he has no visits planned during the high school season.

“So far I’m focusing on the season right now,” Johnson said. “After the season, I will make a decision.”

Johnson has been listing these same three schools for several years now, and all have a strong connection.

Johnson and his family lived in Lexington, Ky., for several years during his middle school years and he has extended family there.

“Of course they have great tradition and they have a great coach in Coach Cal, and great assistants in Coach O (Orlando Antigua) and Kenny Payne,” Johnson said. “I am very familiar with Lexington as I’ve lived there during my middle school years, so I am very familiar with the area.”

Syracuse assistant Adrian Autry has been recruiting Johnson since the player was in middle school, and Syracuse has produced its share of talented big men.

“I watched them ever since I was growing up in New York City,” Johnson said. “It’s a great school, and they have a great coach in Jim Boeheim.”

Georgetown, of course, has a tradition of sending big men to the NBA, from Patrick Ewing to Greg Monroe.

“Obviously, Georgetown is a good big man school and they have been great in developing big men from Ewing to Roy Hibbert and Greg Monroe,” Johnson said. “Coach [John] Thompson is a great coach, and I’d fit pretty well in their system.”

Andrew Wiggins, Julius Randle and Aaron Gordon aren’t the only elite 2013 players drawing John Calipari’s interest.

The Kentucky coach was at Montverde (Fla.) Academy over the weekend to watch 6-foot-11 big man Dakari Johson, Ben Roberts of the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.

Johnson, a Brooklyn native who spent his middle school years at Sayre’s Middle School in Lexington, reclassifed to 2013 from 2014 and is considering Kentucky, Georgetown, Syracuse, Kansas, Florida, Ohio State and Missouri.

Georgetown and Missouri, which recently offered Johnson, watched Johnson on Wednesday and Florida and Ohio State have also been in recently, Roberts reported. Syracuse has also been in this fall.

“He’s ready to start right now at any place in the country,” Kevin Boyle, Johnson’s current coach at Montverde and his former coach at Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick, told the Herald-Leader on Thursday. “Not putting down any of those schools, but I think if he was at any of those six schools I mentioned he would start now for them.”

Through two blowout victories, Johnson is averaging 22 points and 14 rebounds.

“He doesn’t jump great,” Boyle said. “He’s not super explosive. But he’s incredibly strong around the basket. Keeps the ball up.

“He’s a very good offensive rebounder, and he’s actually a very good passer, too. So I think he has an excellent chance to be a real good college player and a chance to be a real good pro player, too.”

Boyle compared Johnson favorably to current Kentucky center Nerlens Noel.

“The big kid that Kentucky has now is a more athletic player, but Dakari’s definitely further along in his basketball IQ,” he said. “If he was at Kentucky now, he’d be getting very good numbers as a freshman.”

Makini Campbell, Johnson’s mother and a teacher at Montverde, told SNY.tv last week that Kentucky remains a strong option for her son because of the family’s connections to Lexington.

“Actually, last Thanksgiving we spent time with his friends there, with his extended family,” she said. “So for him that is kind of like going back to something that ‘s very familiar and something that is likable.”

Johnson also played alongside former Kentucky star Michael Kidd-Gilchrist at St. Pat’s, when the Celtics lost to St. Anthony in the mythical national championship game in 2011. St. Pat’s 2010-11 season, Boyle’s last in New Jersey, was documented in the film, Prayer For a Perfect Season.

Campbell also indicated that the family had “question marks” about a couple schools on his list that already have centers on their roster or committed for 2013. Syracuse and Kansas fall into that category.

“Some schools will probably not be in the mix because of some players that signed, and also whether or not schools have availability [of scholarships],” she said. “We looked at some schools that they tend to have had verbal commitments from players that are very similar to Dakari, so now he’s kind of getting the thought, ‘Well, maybe that’s not really the school that I may want to consider.’”
