NEW YORK — Anybody with a pulse figures that Canadian Andrew Wiggins will go No. 1 overall in the 2014 NBA Draft.

But can a Canuck possibly pull that feat off this year as well?

“I’m trying to get that No. 1 spot, too,” Canadian power forward Anthony Bennett told SNY.tv Tuesday night at the Draft Lottery.

Kentucky big man Nerlens Noel seems like a safe bet to go No. 1 overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who won the rights to the top pick for the second time in three years. The Cavs could pair Noel with young guns Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters in an attempt to lure LeBron James back to Cleveland in 2014.

Bennett, a 6-foot-8 power forward, is projected to go No. 5 to the Phoenix Suns by SheridanHoops.com and No. 6 to the New Orleans Pelicans by Chad Ford of ESPN.

“I’m just excited, just anxious,” Bennett said. “I just want the time to come.”

Bennett wore his left arm in a sling, the result of recent rotator cuff surgery that caused him to miss the Chicago Pre-Draft Camp.

“I’m doing rehab at the beginning of next month,” he said. “The sling comes off the end of this month so It’s just a process but I’m pretty sure it’s going to go well.”

Bennett averaged 16.1 points and 8.1 rebounds in his only season at UNLV.

He is one of two Canadians projected to go in the lottery, with Gonzaga’s Kelly Olynyk the other.

A year from now, Canada is expected to make history when Wiggins, who recently pledged to Kansas, is expected to go No. 1 overall.

“I know we have a lot of great players on the come up,” Bennett said. “We have vets — Steve Nash, Joel Anthony. We have Tristan [Thompson], we have Cory [Joseph], we have people in the draft this year. Even the younger guys in college. We’re on the come up we just gotta keep working.”

By the 2016 Olympics, Canada could have a loaded Senior National Team led by Wiggins, Bennett, Thompson, Joseph, UNLV forward Khem Birch and younger players like Syracuse-bound Tyler Ennis, Florida State pledge Xavier Rathan Mayes, uncommitted senior Trey Lyles and others.

“It would be crazy because last summer there was a Team Canada camp,” Bennett said. “Everybody was over there and it was just a lot of talent under one building and it was just a good feeling.”

Bennett is repped by Canadian Mike George, the former co-director of the CIA Bounce AAU team. Going forward, George could end up representing many of the future Canadian stars, too.

“Speaking for myself, I feel comfortable with him being my agent,” Bennett said.
“Just knowing him for all my AAU career. I feel like I can trust him. I’m pretty sure everybody else thinks like that, too.”

Special to ZAGSBLOG

CHICAGO — This year’s NBA draft class looks especially thin on shooters.

The lack of three-point specialists is Tim Hardway Jr.’s gain.

Hoping to solidify himself as one of the top long-range threats in the draft, Hardaway has showcased his jumper for NBA teams in workouts. Another strong showing in drills at last week’s Chicago Pre-Draft Combine greatly helped his stock.

ESPN’s Chad Ford bumped Hardaway up from No. 34 to No. 27 overall.

“I competed very well,” said Hardaway. “I gave it my all, didn’t take any plays or anything off in the drills. I tried to dominate everything I did. You got one or two chances to make a coach or GM happy, so you want to go out there and put in maximum effort while playing against these guys.”

In a group of shooting guards including Allen Crabbe, Archie Goodwin and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Hardaway shot the ball as well as anyone. The Michigan product’s success came as no surprise to him.

“You have to have that confidence,” Hardaway explained, “especially coming from a program where all we do is shoot. I’ve been in the gym constantly, working on my shot and trying to stay as consistent as possible. It felt really good out there.”

The 6-foot-6 Hardaway boasts the requisite size to play off-guard at the professional level. As a junior he averaged 14.5 points and shot 37 percent from three for the Wolverines, the national runner-up. His athleticism and potential as a defender makes him an intriguing commodity.

Teams including Atlanta, Milwaukee, Minnesota, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Oklahoma have taken notice, sitting down with Hardaway for interviews. His three college seasons have Hardaway feeling more than prepared for the next level.

“I feel like I can definitely make an impact shooting wise,” he said. “I can also grab rebounds and push into transition, be a decision maker. A lot of pressure is always on the point guard to push, but if you can grab the rebound as a two you can get him out there to score as well.”

Throughout the draft preparation process, Hardaway has benefitted from his relationship with his father Tim — the former Miami Heat All-Star point guard. The elder Hardaway’s professional experience has been invaluable for his son.

“I can talk to him about anything now,” said Hardaway. “If I need help he’s one call away. It’s great to have a father like that. I just talked to him—he was like ‘Are you having fun?’ and said that’s all that matters. That’s been his advice since day one, and I’ll continue to do that.”

Hardaway chose Priority Sports and Agent Mark Bartelstein last month, citing his reputation working with “underdogs” and helping turn them into successful pros. Late-round selections like David Lee and Taj Gibson are some of Bartelstein’s top clients, and Hardaway hopes to follow that model.

He knows nothing will come easy.

“I’m not going to take the foot off the gas pedal at all,” said Hardway. “I’m going to keep on working. I feel like I still have a lot to prove and have to take that mentality into each workout from here on out.”

Special to ZAGSBLOG

CHICAGO – Who’s No.1?

Ben McLemore certainly has a case in next month’s NBA Draft.

One of several names thrown around as the potential top overall pick, the smooth shooting guard from Kansas made his case at the Chicago Pre-Draft Combine.

The consensus seems to be that this year’s draft is historically week, and the confusion at the top of the class reflects that.

Although Kentucky big man Nerlens Noel is regarded as the likely No. 1 pick, McLemore, injured UNLV star Anthony Bennett and Indiana guard Victor Oladipo have each been mentioned as potential No. 1 picks. Some have even speculated that Michigan point guard Trey Burke could go first, depending on how the lottery order falls. The big picture remains unclear.

The Draft Lottery will take place Tuesday night in New York, and it’s entirely possible that the Orlando Magic or New Orleans Pelicans — both of which have young big men — could trade the rights to presumed No. 1 pick Noel should the ping pong balls fall their way.

“Makes more sense for New Orleans to trade it,” one Western Conference GM told SNY.tv. “Noel is a power forward and a perfect complement to [center] Nikola [Vucevic].”

Still, McLemore could present the highest upside of them all.

An elite athlete, standing 6-foot-5 with a 42-inch vertical, McLemore’s uncanny scoring ability has established him as a legit top-three choice.

“This year’s Brad Beal,” the GM said of McLemore.

The chance to hear his name called first next month has helped keep McLemore motivated.

“It’s definitely important to me, but not just because people say I’m [a top pick],” said McLemore. “I still have to work for it. At the same time, I want to make history. It’s been a while since a shooting guard has gone No. 1. It would definitely mean a lot to me.”

Of late, McLemore has been surrounded by controversy after his former AAU coach Darius Cobb admitted taking money to steer the talented guard toward potential agents. McLemore still has yet to choose an agent, and remains focused on his NBA aspirations in spite of it all.

“I’m just trying to get through the process,” McLemore said, “to get to that special day where I can walk across that stage and say to myself ‘I made it.’ Down the road, however my career goes, I’m just going to keep working hard each and every day.”

Drawing comparisons to a more athletic Ray Allen, McLemore averaged 15.9 points and 5.2 rebounds as a redshirt freshman last season. Kansas coach Bill Self called him the most talented player he’s ever coached. The St. Louis native helped lead Kansas to its ninth straight Big 12 title and a Sweet 16 appearance.

Some scouts have raised concerns about McLemore’s makeup, saying that he lacks the “killer instinct” with a tendency to defer to others. But whether or not he’s cut out to be a team’s top scorer, his strengths will make him tough to pass on.

“I can do a lot of things,” said McLemore. “I have great shooting ability, great leaping ability, quickness and I can guard pretty well. I know every night I’m going to go out there, give it my all and be a dog.”

Though he sat out a year, along with fellow Jayhawk Jamari Traylor, due to academic ineligibility, the work McLemore put in made him an immediate force at the college level. He says the whole experience turned out productive, and given where his draft stock lies, it’s hard to disagree.

“It was kind of tough,” he said. “At the same time I put in the work to get where I’m at now. That redshirt year was a blessing. I stayed in the gym, did some extra stuff and worked with the coaches. The following year I had the chance to show my talent and perform, and that’s what I did.”

McLemore grew up in extreme poverty, the second youngest of six children, with his mother working multiple jobs to make ends meet. His NBA contract will drastically change things for his family, still based in St. Louis. McLemore says his youngest brother Kevin, now a high school senior, will live with him wherever he ends up.

All of that is motivation. Until he signs that contract, McLemore will keep grinding. And no matter where he calls home, the hard work won’t stop. After all, that mentality is all he’s ever known.

“It’s still a dream to me right now,” he said. “I can’t believe I’m in this position, to provide for myself and for my family. It hasn’t hit me yet, that I’m here and about to head to the NBA. It’s just a blessing.”

CHICAGO — In what was a stressful week for many, nobody at the NBA Draft Combine had more fun than Steven Adams.

Seven feet tall in shoes and weighing over 250 pounds, the New Zealand native cuts an imposing figure — but Adams was all smiles Friday as he discussed his draft preparations. The Pitt product enjoyed himself all week, particularly going through interviews with potential employers.

“It’s been awesome,” Adams said. “[Teams] just want to get to know me and my background. They all have their own interview styles. Dallas had a sports psychologist who tries to mentally torment you — I found that fun, it was really different.”

Adams also spoke with teams including Minnesota, Orlando and Phoenix, taking in his surroundings and appreciating each step of the process. The week marked his first real taste of the NBA spotlight.

“Meeting new people, it’s cool,” said Adams. “It’s almost been an asking them for their autograph type of thing. I saw the Dallas head coach [Rick Carlisle] and was like, ‘Oh my god, what’s up bro? I’ve seen you on TV!’”

After his positive showings at the combine and in workouts, some now see Adams as a Top 10 selection, or at least Top 20. Still just 19, his physical gifts—his size as well as quickness and ability to run the floor — scream with promise. He also displayed an improved jump shot on Friday.

“Great in workouts,” one Western Conference GM told SNY.tv. “More skilled facing the hoop than he showed at Pitt. Probably going 15-23″ in the Draft.”

DraftExpress.com has Adams going No. 16 overall, and Chad Ford of ESPN has him at No. 19.

Scarily, Adams has only played competitive basketball for six years.

Adams’ father passed away in 2006, and basketball helped him fill the void. Adams, with help from his older brother Warren moved to Wellington, New Zealand’s capital. There he began to work with Kenny McFadden, a former Washington State player and according to Adams, New Zealand’s “NBA guru.” McFadden was also a pro teammate of Pitt coach Jamie Dixon’s in New Zealand, hence the commitment to Pitt.

“When I was 13, I started really loving the game,” Adams explained. “Kenny taught me a ton of stuff and I liked the progress I had made. I got addicted to it, and I wanted to keep carrying it on.”

In 2011, Adams joined the Wellington Saints in New Zealand’s professional league. After winning Rookie of the Year and helping the Saints to a domestic championship, he packed his bags for the United States, earning a reputation as a coveted international prospect and NBA hopeful.

Upon his arrival, Adams spent a year at Notre Dame (MA) Prep before heading to Pittsburgh.

In just 23.4 minutes per game as a freshman, Adams averaged 7.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and two blocks — not a bad showing from a still-raw prospect learning the American game.

“The competition was way higher than in New Zealand,” Adams said. “I wasn’t used to playing against really tall people who were strong as well. Back home I could usually go over them, now I try to use my body to get a hook shot off and to rebound.”

Though still very much a project-type player, Adams’ considerable upside is sure to make him a valuable part of his new team’s plans. He’ll likely sit with fellow prospects in the draft’s green room next month, waiting to hear David Stern call his name and take the stage on national television. And as usual, no matter whose hat he puts on, it’ll be no big deal.

“I’ll just be relaxing,” said Adams with a laugh. “I heard they’ve got real good food [at the draft]. I’ll be good.”

Special to ZAGSBLOG

CHICAGO — Every NBA draft has its unknowns, names full of intrigue and potential, boom-or-bust players who can make general managers look like a genius or help get them fired.

From the high-major studs to the European imports, all hoped to increase their stock this week at the Chicago Pre-Draft Combine. And all things considered, perhaps the most enigmatic player in the gym was Norvel Pelle.

Standing nearly 6-foot-11 in shoes, with over seven feet of wingspan and a 9-foot-1 inch standing reach, Pelle certainly looked the part of an NBA prospect. Though only 207 pounds, you couldn’t help but notice his raw athletic ability. The upside was obvious.

The thing is, hardly anyone had seen him play.

Pelle, once a top-ranked high school center out of Los Angeles, never took the floor for a college team, unable to meet the NCAA’s academic eligibility requirements.

He committed to St. John’s and head coach Steve Lavin in 2011 but was ruled ineligible that August along with fellow commits JaKarr Sampson and Amir Garrett. While Sampson and Garrett eventually ended up with the Johnnies, Pelle never did.

Last August, Pelle committed to Iona — which has a history of success giving players second chances — and was compared by some to Kevin Durant.

“I think he’s going to be what everybody is comparing him to right now,” Rambo Rasheed, Pelle’s mentor, told SNY.tv last August. “A ‘KD type of player. a new age KD. Honestly, I think he’s going to be the new age basketball player.

“He’s 6-11, he can handle exceptionally well. He can shoot it exceptionally well from the mid-range. He’s one of the fastest people up and down the court. His athleticism speaks for itself.”

The Gaels could’ve used him during their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

“Norvel has unlimited potential and we thought in our up-tempo systeam he would be our most talented player and a possible Player of the Year candidate as a freshman,” Iona associate head coach Jared Grasso told SNY.tv.

“With [head coach] Tim [Cluess's] success developing players and Norvel’s tools there is not telling the success he could have had at Iona.”

But a funny thing happened on the way to becoming the next Durant. Pelle never made it to Iona and fell off the grid.

One year later, the Los Angeles native has resurfaced at the combine, hoping to catch on in the league and rediscover the dream that was once all but lost. NBA executives have taken note of Pelle’s talents — still very much raw, but clearly a possible steal for someone willing to take a chance. What’s more, he’s just 20 years old.

Pelle has interviewed with teams including Atlanta, Houston, Memphis, Miami, New Orleans and Portland, making his case to be selected in June’s draft.

“They want to know what happened last year, the reason I didn’t go to college and what I’ve been doing,” said Pelle. “I got it together, I went to prep school [at Malvern Prep in Pennsylvania and Stoneridge Prep near Los Angeles] and I’ve been taking care of my mom. I’ve just been focusing, trying to get ready.”

Many teams had already taken a look at Pelle during private workouts, but the combine provided more than that — it was a measuring stick opportunity for the lanky center.

“Just being here and going through the experience of the combine, being with the top 60 players, it’s a lot of fun,” Pelle said. “I did pretty well, I thought I held my own. I still have to get stronger, but I did what I had to do.”

His post game is still developing, but Pelle is confident he can help an NBA team in the future. He wasn’t concerned about where he’d be drafted — he hadn’t even discussed it yet with agent Cervando Tejeda.

“He’s probably a guy who’ll have to make it via the NBA D-League,” one Western Conference GM told SNY.tv.

One veteran NBA scout was more blunt, calling Pelle “an AAU tragedy who got bad advice. Wasted years of development. Get his passport ready.”

Hungry for a second chance, Pelle kept it simple at the combine.

“Blocking shots and running the floor are my strengths,” he said. “I can bring energy and heart…just the willingness to come and play hard every day.”

It’s no secret the odds for NBA success aren’t in Pelle’s favor. He knows there are things he could have done differently. He says all the trouble is in the past. Given all he’s been through, there’s still plenty left to be accomplished, and it will continue to drive him forward.

“Being the underdog in this whole combine is really motivational,” Pelle said. “Just to get picked and not have any game film, I’m really motivated to be here. Anywhere I end up, I’ll be happy.”

CHICAGO – Count two former Syracuse players among those who would love to see the ACC Tournament come to Madison Square Garden.

“It would be great having the conference tournament there,” former Syracuse guard Michael Carter-Williams said at the Chicago Pre-Draft Combine. “The Garden is a great place to play. It would help us [Syracuse] a lot. There would be a lot of Orange there.”

As covered in this earlier story, the ACC is investigating moving the tournament to New York at some point after 2015, when their current deal in Greensboro, N.C., expires.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim and several incoming recruits are — no surprise — in favor of the idea.

Players want to compete on the brightest stage, and no brighter spotlight exists anywhere in the country than MSG.

“I feel like if the ACC moved to Madison Square Garden, it would be great for everybody,” said former Syracuse forward James Southerland of Queens. “I know a lot of people from down South would love to come to Madison Square Garden and see it in person. It’s a great venue and makes sense for the ACC to use. “

As for Southerland’s performance here, he reportedly made 14-of-25 3-pointers from a variety of places on the floor on Thursday.

The former Cardozo and Notre Dame Prep star averaged 13.3 points last season and set a new Big East Tournament record for 3-pointers in the event.

“If you’re going to have a special skill, this is the one to have,” ESPN analyst and former NBA general manager Tom Penn said during ESPNU’s broadcast of the combine, according to Syracuse.com. “Every team needs floor-spacers. They need guys on the weak side. James Southerland is the kind of player who can stand out there and bang in threes.”

Southerland does not even appear on the DraftExpress.com 2013 Mock Draft, but he could be a fit for a team needing a shooter.

“He could be a great fit on the right team,” ESPN draft analyst Chad Ford said. “Not necessarily a starter or a star, but off the bench. I think he’s a really nice pick in the late first round or early second round.”

As for the 6-5 Carter-Williams, he is projected as the No. 12 pick by Draft Express, but opted not to participate in the combine, only to do interviews.

By DAVE SPAHN

Special to ZAGSBLOG

CHICAGO – The past college basketball season and ensuing months certainly could have gone better for Shabazz Muhammad.

First, the NCAA ruled Muhammad ineligible for the season just days before UCLA’s first game for receiving improper benefits. The ruling was voided after three games, but the cloud of an NCAA suspension still hovered over his head.

Next, the 6-foot-6, 220-pound Muhammad failed to reach the lofty, arguably unrealistic expectations placed on him during his collegiate tenure. He quickly slid down from the top of draft boards and is currently projected at No. 10 on DraftExpress.com.

Then, reports began to leak about Muhammad being a full year older than originally believed. His father, Ron Holmes, claimed him to be 19 years old, but his original birth certificate proved otherwise. A 20-year-old freshman who’s older than most sophomores suddenly seems much less impressive.

Now, Muhammad felt the need to impress NBA front office personnel at the NBA combine in order to help secure his position as a lottery pick, an unimaginable scenario before the season started.

More importantly, Muhammad had to answer the tough questions for NBA front office personnel that everyone wanted to know.

What was the real story behind his initial season-long NCAA suspension? How knowledgeable was he about the impermissible benefits his family received? Why should NBA teams invest millions of dollars into a player with questions about his past?

“I cleared it [the NCAA suspension story] up,” Muhammad said Friday at the Chicago Pre-Draft Combine. “Some of that stuff I didn’t know what was going on. I’m a guy who just plays basketball, and I had my other family members controlling that other stuff. Now, as an NBA guy, I’m more mature as a player, so I can definitely speak for myself. “

He continued: “I just wanted to get those questions out of the way so everyone can know what’s really going on. A lot of people speculate how bad I am as a player and stuff like that, but I really cleared it up. I was so happy to do that stuff, and I can’t wait to do these other interviews this afternoon.”

One Western Conference GM told SNY.tv the age issue wasn’t a problem.

“The age doesn’t bother me,” the GM said. “He needs to be in a place where his game works based on style of play. He’s a scorer and needs to be in a system where he is featured in multiple isolation sets.”

UCLA’s offensive system under former coach Ben Howland was part of the reason Muhammad could not show his true NBA potential throughout the season. For much of the season, the Bruins did not play a high flying, fast paced, pick-and-roll system comparable to many of the NBA teams.

“He shot the ball well at the combine and looked good,” one veteran NBA scout told SNY.tv. “I think he’s in the 9-14 range.”

Muhammad said his preference is to be a shooting guard instead of a small forward, but there is debate among NBA personnel about that. The GM said he’s a three, while the scout called him a two.

One question Muhammad answered over and over – with his words and his actions – was his passion to play the game of basketball. Unlike many of his counterparts likely destined for the lottery, Muhammad competed in all facets of the NBA combine.

“I’m so blessed to be out here. That’s why I love just playing,” Muhammad explained about competing in the combine. “Some of the guys are sitting out, but I want to play. If I’m a lottery or not, I want to play against the guys and compete. I’m not running away from anybody. That’s one thing I love about my game. I want to play.”

Projected No. 1 overall pick Nerlens Noel weighed in at 206 pounds at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago and immediately took some heat as a result.

Anthony Davis, the No. 1 pick in last year’s draft, weighed 222 pounds at the combine and the ESPNU crew wonders how Noel will be able to post up and defend NBA big men at that weight.

Can his frame handle much more weight?

“I’m 206, I can post up,” Fran Fraschilla said on ESPNU, adding that he didn’t think Noel is the consensus No. 1 pick.

“I talked to a number of NBA general managers last night who echoed Fran’s concerns about this,” Chad Ford said. “206, even at the power forward position if you project him, that’s really light.”

One Western Conference GM said Noel’s weight wasn’t an issue, though.

“He’ll get stronger but his game is based on fast-twitch, quickness, mobility and agility,” the GM told SNY.tv.

The former Kentucky freshman did measure 6-10 in socks and 6-11 1/2 in shoes with a 9-2 wingspan, all of which are bigger than Davis.

Noel told Andy Katz he interviewed Thursday with six teams — Boston, Orlando, Charlotte, Phoenix, New Orleans and Cleveland.

He said he’s “well ahead of schedule” on his return from a left ACL injury.

“They say it’s still a learning process for this injury but the 6-8 month point would be around November/December,” said Noel, who led the nation with 4.4 blocks per game to go with 10.5 points and 9.5 rebounds.

Noel is at the eight-and-a-half-week point of his injury and said he’s working out twice a day in Birmingham, Ala., to get back.

“Through this injury process,” he said, “I’m just going to prepare my body and prepare my mind for what the NBA holds for me and I think I’ll definitely do well in coming back from this and I’ll have all my skills polished up.”

FREE THROWS

Katz reported on three injured players. Louisville’s Gorgui Dieng has a boot on his right ankle but is hopeful he can work out for some teams in the coming weeks. He interviewed with six teams…Maryland’s Alex Lex has a stress fracture in his left shin and will talk to 15 teams in Chicago. He hopes to be ready to work out in August….Jamaal Franklin of San Diego State has a boot on his left ankle and hopes to work out in June.

Nerlens Noel is expected to be the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft next month, but he says he’s not thinking about that too much at this point.

“I really don’t pay too much attention to that,” the 6-foot-10 Noel said Monday on ESPN’s “Mike & Mike.” “My main focus is just rehabbing and working hard down there in Birmingham, Ala….and just really staying focused on that.

“I’m not too much into the high draft picks and stuff. That’s really my main focus, is getting back on the court.”

Noel had ACL surgery in March after tearing it during a February game against Florida.

Noel, who averaged 10.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.4 blocks as a freshman at Kentucky, will attend the Chicago Pre-Draft Camp this week but only to interview with teams.

“I will definitely just be taking some interviews, shooting some free throws at the combine, being interactive with some of the teams,” Noel said. “Just showing my personality and being able to speak with them and show them what I’m about.”

Both Iman Shumpert and Derrick Rose tore their ACLs on the same day in April 2012. Shumpert came back in January and has played very well as of late in the playoffs with the Knicks, while Rose has not yet returned with the Bulls.

Asked how he would approach his comeback, Noel said, “I definitely know being mentally strong is a big part in this injury and from Day 1 I made sure that was something I would focus in on because that’s a big part. When I get cleared to play I will definitely look to play but you gotta definitely be there mentally just as much as physically.”

Asked if he would take it slow when he does come back, Noel said: “Yeah, definitely you gotta be careful with this injury because it takes a while to come back. You don’t want to blow that away just wanting to get back.

“You gotta take your time with it and come back just as strong as before.”

Still, he admitted that watching the physical Bulls-Heat series has gotten him “amped up.”

“Oh yeah, that gets me amped,” he said. “I was watching the game the other night. I started doing pushups. I can’t wait.”
