Oak Hill Academy power forward Lennard Freeman has cut his list to five schools and embarks on a key visit today (Friday).

The 6-foot-9, 245-pound Washington, D.C., native has trimmed his list to DePaul, N.C. State, Pittsburgh, UAB and Villanova, he told SNY.tv.

Freeman will visit Villanova beginning Friday and then trip to Pittsburgh May 3-5. Freeman may also trip to UAB May 10, he told SNY.tv.

As for the Villanova visit, that would be the school closest to his home.

“I just want to see the whole school, the coaching staff, the players and how they play and see campus life outside of school,” he told SNY.tv.

On the upcoming Pitt visit, Freeman said, “We haven’t really talked about it. We’re going to be doing that.”

Freeman tripped to N.C. State this past weekend, where he was hosted by Tyler Lewis and Ralston Turner.

“It was good,” he said. “I saw the whole school, the players, what they got, what they need, how I can come in and fit. I saw the whole program.”

He visited Seton Hall for the Rutgers game in March.

“It was good,” he said. “I really didn’t see the campus life. They was on spring break. I met with some teachers, saw the players and everything. I saw the Prudential Center.”

Freeman is still considering attending prep school next year and reclassifying to 2014, but said he won’t decide until after his visits are completed.

“I’m thinking about it,” he said. “I can go either way. I’m going to decide after I take these vistis and I decide which school is best for me.”

EDWARDS TO NEW MEXICO

Arthur Edwards, a 6-7 forward from Northwest Florida, committed to New Mexico, coach Steve Forbes told SNY.tv.

Edwards helped NWF to a 30-4 record and the national runner-up junior college position by averaging 6.4 points and 3.2 rebounds.

A second-team All-Panhandle selection, he was named to the Region 8 All-Tournament Team. Edwards shot over 40 percent from the arc.

He will have three years of eligibility at New Mexico.

Oak Hill shooting guard Sindarius Thornwell is down to two schools — N.C. State and South Carolina.

Thornwell will visit N.C. State Oct. 12 and may visit South Carolina Oct. 19, but that date has not been entrenched yet.

The South Carolina native had previously considered Ohio State and Georgia.

As for South Carolina, Thornwell told SNY.tv, “I like coach Frank [Martin]. It’s close to home. I got an opportunity to get a lot of playing time there and I like the playing style there. It’s just where I’m from, it’s just me. South Carolina is me.”

With the Wolfpack, he said: “They got a good chance to win a national championship. Playing style fits me. He lets his guards play. Coach [Mark Gottfried], he’s a good person. I just feel comfortable with both coaches.”

As for a timeframe, he said, “I’ll decide by November.”

Thornwell played well on the summer circuit, going for 38 points and 13 boards in one game at the NIke Global Challenge.

“He has a huge upside,” Oak Hill coach Steve Smith said. “He is learning what working hard and getting his body in shape means. We are demanding a lot from him and he has responded for the first time in his young basketball life.”

“He is a scorer who is improving his perimeter shooting. He is a great on-the-ball defender who is learning to guard screens and be a great help defender as well.”

Said Thornwell: “I just want to come in, contribute to the team as much as possible and do whatever it takes to win.”

“I’m still looking to trim [my list] down,” he told SNY.tv Friday by phone.

“They been on my list for a while, too,” he said. “I’ve had a litle bit of interest in them.”

Indiana coach Tom Crean had a home visit with Williams at Oak Hill. Williams will visit for Hoosier Hysteria Oct. 20, along with Stanford Robinson and Beejay Anya.

“I like Tom Crean a lot, we get along well,” he said. “I like the style of play that they have, too.”

Crean also had a home visit with center Kennedy Meeks Thursday night and meets with big man Beejay Anya Saturday night.

NEW YORK — Troy Williams’s recruitment is in flux.

Just a few months ago, he was going to announce for Kentucky or North Carolina.

Now a slew of new schools, including Ohio State, Indiana, Kansas, Memphis, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgetown and Arkansas are in the mix for the 6-foot-6, high-flying athletic wing who had 10 points as the USA team beat the NYC team, 87-86, Saturday night in the Big Strick classic at City College of New York.

Williams, who will spend his senior season at Oak Hill Academy, plans to visit Alabama this coming weekend, and may trip to South Carolina on the way out.

“[Alabama] is a real get up-and-down team, uptempo,” Williams told SNY.tv in the above video. “They’re recruiting me and my point guard, Anthony ‘Cat’ Barber, so we’re looking at going to them.

“I’ve been talking to coach Anthony Grant a lot. He’s excited about me coming down to the campus next weekend.”

Williams and Barber, who missed the Big Strick game with an injury, are considering packaging at Alabama, Louisville or potentially Kansas.

“We’re about 50/50 on it,” Williams said. “We’re going to talk about it more. We’re going to try and either commit and sign in November. If not, we’re going to just wait until the spring.”

As for the other schools, Williams has no visits planned.

“With Kansas, they finished second last year,” Williams said. “I’ve been keeping in touch with Coach [Bill] Self and coach [Joe] Dooley a lot. They’re also recruiting Cat, too, so they’re looking to get us together.”

Indiana is also working hard for Williams, as we reported in this story.

“Indiana is a real up-tempo type,” he said. “I’ve been talking to their coaches. Their recruit Stanford Robinson, he’s been talking to me about it so I can learn inside and outside information about them.”

Ohio State and Memphis have also expressed interest.

“Ohio State just became interested,” he said. “I’m looking at them, I don’t know a lot about them.

“Memphis, I just found that they’ve been recruiting me. My uncle [Boo Williams] has been keeping it from me for some reason.”

South Carolina, Georgetown and Arkansas are also in the mix.

Troy Williams of Phoebus (Va.) High will spend his senior season at vaunted powerhouse Oak Hill Academy, while fellow 2013 star Allerik Freeman with play for Findlay Prep.

“He’s a combo forward, he can play the three/four,” Oak Hill coach Steve Smith said of Williams in confirming the news. “His deficiency, if he has one, is his outside shot. He thinks he needs to make a few changes on his shot.

“He plays extremely hard, defends, offensive rebounds like crazy. Scores inside, scores mid-range. He just needs to work on his outside shot to become a little more consistent. I like the fact that he plays so hard.”

As first reported by SNY.tv, Williams, the Rivals No. 4 small forward in 2013, recently opted to expand his list and wait on his college decision.

He added Florida, Louisville, South Carolina and Georgetown to Kentucky and North Carolina, saying both his uncle, Boo Williams, and the latter two schools supported the decision to wait.

Williams will join Sindarius Thornwell, a 6-5 shooting guard from Lancaster (S.C.) ranked No. 10 at that position by Rivals, in Oak Hill’s new class.

The Warriors also return wing R.J. Currington and combo guard Ike Iroegbu.

Multiple reports say North Carolina-bound guard Nate Britt Jr. will also attend Oak Hill, but Smith said “I’m not sure on the point guard yet.”

Oak Hill will play next year in the Iolani Classic in Hawaii, an event that will also feature Findlay Prep, the reigning ESPN NHSI champions.

Smith said the Warriors will also face Jabari Parker and Chicago Simeon in the Hall of Fame Classic, and will compete in a doubleheader in Las Vegas in which Findlay is also involved.

As for Freeman, he Tweeted that he would leave Charlotte (N.C.) Olympic to spend his final year at Findlay, and Findlay assistant Todd Simon confirmed the news.

Freeman, a 6-3 shooting guard ranked No. 11 at that position in 2013 by Rivals, will be the first North Carolina native to play at Findlay Prep.

Freeman averaged 17.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.3 steals at Olympic last season, helping the Trojans to a 28-2 record and a second straight appearance in the N.C. 4A Western regional tournament.

As reported by SNY.tv, Freeman recently added Duke, UCLA and Ohio State to a list that featured Kansas and Villanova.

Bob Hurley has coached at St. Anthony for 40 years and won 27 State titles and 12 New Jersey Tournament of Champions crowns.

After Tuesday night’s 66-62 victory over Plainfield in the TOC final, Hurley has now led seven teams to undefeated seasons, according to Jim Hague, St. Anthony historian and journalist at the Hudson Reporter.

In four of the previous six unbeaten seasons, the Friars won a USA Today mythical national championship.

But this year, for the third time, St. Anthony won’t win the mythical national title.

That’s because Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., completed its season 44-0 and is ranked No. 1 in both the USA Today and ESPN polls. Findlay Prep (29-1) is currently No. 2 in both rankings and St. Anthony is No. 3 in both.

“I hate to blow your bubble on this one but I really don’t care,” Hurley told SNY.tv in a recent interview. “All I’m interested in is The Star-Ledger poll in New Jersey given out to the No. 1 team in the state at the end of the year. If you do really well in the Ledger poll then you’ve had a really good year.

“The rest of the stuff is so subjective that I’ll leave it up to the people who have been able to take 20,000 high schools and rank them in the country. I know I couldn’t do that. I know in our state it’s a little bit easier.”

High school basketball is subjective the way college football and the BCS are.

Unlike the NCAA Tournament in college basketball, there’s no all-inclusive tournament that features all the top teams. Thus, there’s simply no ironclad way to determine the true national champion.

St. Anthony is also No. 1 in the MaxPreps poll, meaning they could potentially receive a national championship banner from that company.

Five Star Basketball, which includes both prep schools and four-year high schools in its poll, has the Friars at No. 4 behind Oak Hill, Brewster Academy, a prep school that includes fifth-year players, and Findlay Prep. (Full disclosure: I am a consultant for Five Star, but don’t formulate the rankings.)

For the first time in school history, St. Anthony has completed back-to-back perfect seasons — going 65-0 across two campaigns under the leadership of UCLA-bound point guard Kyle Anderson.

St. Anthony previously won mythical national titles as awarded by USA Today in 1989 (32-0), 1996 (31-0), 2008 (32-0) and 2011 (33-0). Last year they also received a national championship banner for finishing No. 1 in ESPN’s Powerade Fab 50 rankings.

“I’ve been coaching for 40 years here and I don’t know of another team ever having back-to-back undefeated seasons,” Hurley told The Ledger after Tuesday night’s win. “That’s saying something because we play some pretty good basketball in this state.”

Bobby Hurley, who the 1989 TOC with St. Anthony and then two NCAA titles at Duke, says this team ranks with any of the previous ones because Anderson is so special.

“Any time you have a player of Kyle Anderson’s caliber and what’s he’s accomplished individually I think the record speaks for itself,” he said. “I think they played great competition. They’ve been perfect so they would certainly I would assume rank with the best teams, my team in ’89 and some others that St. Anthony’s has had. I’m happy for the kids and I’m happy for my dad , all the work that they’ve put in.”

While Findlay Prep still has to compete in the ESPN National High School Invitational later this month, they cannot erase the one loss they have. In fact, all eight teams in that event — including Newark St. Benedict’s Prep — have at least one loss on the season.

The one team that will finish the season unbeaten and with more wins than St. Anthony is Oak Hill, which won a school record 44 straight games without a loss.

The Warriors recently completed a tour of China and elected not to play in the ESPN event.

“I think what we’ve done speaks for itself,” Oak Hill coach Steve Smith told SNY.tv recently. “If polls want to rank us [No.] 1, obviously that’s great for our school and our team and if they choose somebody else that’s up to them.

“We played 10 teams in the Top 50 so I don’t think anybody else has done that.”

Smith, whose teams have competed three times in the ESPN event but never won it, conceded it’s difficult to come up with a system that accurately determines a mythical national champion.

In that way, high school basketball does mimic the BCS poll in which an unbeaten team from a non-BCS conference can sometimes get left out of the mix for a national champion.

“I don’t know,” Smith said. “It’s hard to do that. All the states are involved and the state high school associations are involved. Some teams are playing in the NHSI, the ESPN tournament, some teams can’t. I don’t know.

“It’s hard to get it all uniform. Obviously, you’re proud when your teams finished No. 1 in the country.”

In any other year, Oak Hill coach Steve Smith would be happy to take his team to the ESPN National High School Invitational in North Bethesda, Md.

But not this year.

That’s because Smith is taking the Warriors (43-0) — who are No. 1 in the ESPN poll and No. 2 in the Five Star Power Rankings — on a basketball tour of China that runs March 7-19.

Oak Hill — which has produced a slew of NBA players, including Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony and Rajon Rondo — will return before the NHSI runs March 28-31, but Smith said his team will be too wiped out to prepare for the event and Oak Hill President Michael Groves wasn’t “keen” on the players missing any more school.

If Oak Hill wins its final game Tuesday, they would end their season at 44-0, the most wins in the storied program’s history.

“The guys all want to go to China,” Smith, the Naismith High School Coach of the Year, told SNY.tv Monday. “They’re excited to play international competition. They’re excited to go to China and see another culture.”

The current Oak Hill team features Georgetown signee D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, N.C. State commit Tyler Lewis, UCLA signee Jordan Adams and Memphis-bound Damien Wilson, among others

Oak Hill has never won the three-year old NHSI and has twice lost in the finals, including last year to Montrose Christian (Md.).

Montrose will return this year, as will Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep, Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict’s Prep, Montverde (Fla.) Academy, LaPorte (IN) La Lumiere and the winner of the Florida Tournament of Champions, industry sources told SNY.tv. It remains unclear who the other two teams will be.

“We talked about it [the NHSI]….We played in it three years in a row,” said Smith. ”We’d have to miss two days of school to go to that. My president wasn’t keen on that.”

Smith last took a team overseas in 2004 when Rondo and Josh Smith were on the club that went to Barcelona.

“That was a great experience, they loved it,” Smith said. “When I see those guys, that’s like the highlight of the season. That’s all they talk about.”

In China, Oak Hill will play a Chinese team as well as 18-and-under National Teams from Australia and Lithuania.

“We play each team three times in three different cities [Guangdong, Fujian and Jiangxi], which will be fun because we’ll see different parts of China,” Smith said.

The trip is being funded by the Chinese National Team.

“Their National Team in China is basically footing the bill for all these other teams,” Smith said. “For our team to go over there and play it’s costing them $50,000. You’re talking airline tickets for a party of 15. We’re in five-star hotels. They’re flying us around over there. It’s at least $50 grand per team.

“They obviously have the backing financially and they want basketball to grow. It’s a very popular sport in China. Nike is big in China. Nike basketball has something to do with the event.”

Oak Hill is headed to China at a key time.

Several NBA players including J.R. Smith of the Knicks, Kenyon Martin of the Clippers and former Knicks and Nuggets forward Wilson Chandler played this season in China.

NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver said over All-Star weekend in Orlando the league is in discussions about playing preseason games next season in China, perhaps in Shanghai, where former Houston All-Star Yao Ming owns the Chinese Basketball Association team.

Yao has also been advising Knicks guard Jeremy Lin, whose parents are Taiwanese but whose grandmother has roots in China. Lin has said he plans to return to Taiwan this summer to help grow basketball there.

“With Yao Ming and all that, it’s kind of growing,” Steve Smith said, referring to basketball in China. “And then you’ve got Jeremy Lin, who’s not really from China but he’s got some Chinese in him so he’s like a cult hero over there the last couple weeks more than even he is in the U.S.

“Their basketball is growing, they’re excited.”

And so are the Oak Hill players.

“As far as what team that will be, we can’t say because we don’t have a signed contract,” Brian Nelson, Reeves’ father, told the Modesto Bee. “Reeves is not returning to college. He’s not transferring anywhere. He has every intention of turning pro.”

The 6-foot-8, 235-pound Nelson plans to enter the 2012 NBA Draft and thus cannot sign with an NBA team, even as a free agent, until after the draft, the Bee reported.

Howland suspended Nelson for one game earlier this season, a loss to Middle Tennessee State, but reinstated him for UCLA’s trip to the Maui Invitational, only to watch as Reeves missed the flight to Hawaii. He was then suspended the first half of the Chaminade game. He was later benched in the second half against Texas.

He was averaging 5.7 points and 4.5 rebounds in six games this season.

His departure opens up another scholarship for UCLA, which has a total of four to use.

Two have been given to St. Anthony point guard Kyle Anderson and Oak Hill shooting guard Jordan Adams.

The Bruins hope to give the other two to small forward Shabazz Muhammad, the consensus No. 1 player in the Class, and 6-9 forward Tony Parker.
Parker put up 29 and 10 Thursday night but his Livonia (Ga.) High team lost to Adams and Oak Hill, 72-68, at Morehouse College’s Forbes Arena.

The Rivals No. 10 center in the Class of 2012, Ibeh also considered Arkansas, Vanderbilt and Texas A&M.

He brings “great length and athleticism,” Naaman Forest coach Jeff Clarkson said by text. “He is already a great shot blocker. He needs to work on the offense but he has tremendous upside with his size and quickness.”

Ibeh is Rick Barnes‘ fourth commit for the Class of 2012, joining 6-10 center Cameron Ridley, 5-11 point guard Javan Felix and 6-9 power forward Connor Lammert.

HAMMONS TO PURDUE

A.J. Hammons, a 7-foot center from Oak Hill Academy, chose Purdue late Thursday night, per Warriors coach Steve Smith.

An Indiana native, Hammons is the No. 18 center in the Class of 2012.

“A.J. has improved his body and overall skill level since coming to Oak Hill last year,” Smith said by text. “He is a true center that defends, blocks shots and is developing on the offensive end of the floor. I think he will develop into an outstanding player at Purdue.”

He joins Raphael Davis, Jay Simpson, and Ronnie Johnson in Purdue’s recruiting class.

SMITH-RIVERA TO ANNOUNCE SATURDAY

Oak Hill Academy guard D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera will make his announcement Saturday at 5 p.m. at Westlane Middle School in Indiana, and is leaning toward Georgetown, sources told SNY.tv.

Ranked the No. 5 point guard in the Class of 2012 by Rivals, the 6-3 Smith-Rivera is also considering Louisville, Memphis and N.C. State.

OBEKPA TO VISIT UCONN

Chris Obekpa, a 6-9 forward from Our Savior New American, will take an unofficial visit Thursday to UConn, per Our Savior assistant Eric Jaklitsch.

Obekpa has already taken an unofficial to Providence, but cannot take any official visits until his SAT results come in from the Oct. 1 test.

Obekpa will also be at St. John’s Midnight Madness Friday night, along with St. John’s commits Amir Garrett, Ricardo Gathers and Darrick Wood. Cardozo 2013 forward Jermaine Lawrence will also be among those in attendance, per coach Ron Naclerio, as will 2013 wing Jason Boswell of Trinity (Conn.) Catholic.
