The son of former NBA star Alvin Robertson, Cook also considered Gonzaga, Illinois, TCU, VCU, South Carolina, New Mexico and Arkansas.

“I liked the fact that me, Damyean [Dotson] and Dominic [Artis] will have a chance to grow together,” Cook told SNY.tv by text. “I think Oregon fits my style. The fans were crazy and I’m just excited about Dana and the coaching staff.”

“He chose Oregon because of his relationship with Coach Dana Altman and Coach Tony Stubblefield,” Forbes said. “He has the opportunity to play and be in the same class as Dominic Artis and Damyean Dotson. He also liked the style of play.”

Cook was recently named first-team All-Panhandle and also the Freshman of the Year. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Cook initially signed with Iowa State out of high school.

He joins Louisville-bound point guard Chris Jones among high-major D-1 commits coming out of Forbes’ program.

“Proud to be a jayhawk,” he Tweeted Tuesday.

He added by text: “Great school for big guys, development. I like the players, coaching staff, facilities [and] academics.”

He chose the Jayhawks over Florida and Texas.

“He chose KU over the others because it was in his gut and he believes that they have the ability to prepare him for the NBA,” his coach, Justin Harden, told SNY.tv.

A native of Cameroon, Embiid is unranked by the major recruiting services because he has only played organized ball for a short time.

“His upside is limitless depending on his work ethic,” Harden said. “He has great fundamentals for having only played for two years.”

Embiid joins a Kansas class that includes guards Frank Mason and Conner Frankamp and wings Wayne Selden and Brannen Greene.

BELL TO OREGON

Jordan Bell, a 6-foot-7 center at Long Beach Poly, pledged to Oregon over Auburn and UConn.

“Just’ everything. Coaching staff, players, weather, people that supported the basketball team,” he said by text by way of explanation for his choice. “Style of play.”

Bell is known for his rebounding and shot-blocking.

Aaron Gordon is back from his weekend official visit to Oregon and will head to Washington this coming weekend.

“[He said] he enjoyed it,” Tim Kennedy, head coach at San Jose (Calif.) Archbishop Mitty told SNY.tv Monday. “He was really impressed with the facilities and [said] they take care of their guys over there.”

Gordon knows Oregon point guard Dominic Artis from their time together on the Oakland Soldiers.

“So they have kind of a good connection,” Kennedy said.

The 6-foot-7 Gordon was at Oregon during a busy weekend when the No. 3-ranked football team trounced Pac-12 rival Arizona, 49-0, and the basketball team picked up a pair of commits in the Robinson brothers and also added Rice transfer Arsalan Kazemi.

Gordon has a home visit with Kansas head coach Bill Self on Tuesday and then heads to Washington this weekend.

He will take officials to Kansas (Oct. 11) and Arizona (Oct. 18) and still has to schedule his visit to Kentucky.

“Kentucky’s not finalized, but it might be that late October weekend, that 27th weekend,” Kennedy said.

As for Washington, Gordon has a longstanding relationship with head coach Lorenzo Romar.

“Coach Romar has known his dad since they were in high school,” Kennedy said. “He’s known him since he recruited Drew [Gordon] coming out of high school, so he’s known him for a while.”

Still, Kennedy says Gordon has no favorite as of now.

“I don’t think he has a top one [school] right now,” he said. “I think he’s still feeling them out.”

Kentucky wasn’t really on Gordon’s radar early this summer, but now they’ve become a factor.

“He’s pretty serious about them. they’ve already done their home visit and he’s impressed with Kentucky,” Kennedy said. “He always wants a challenge to go against the top competition around so they’re always going to be in the mix.”

As for Arizona, freshman forward Brandon Ashley is one of several Oakland Soldiers on the roster, “so he knows them,” Kennedy said.

“He’s done an unofficial out there before so he loves the facilities they have out there and the program they’re building up,” Kennedy said.

Gordon may be the least familiar with Kansas, but will meet with coach Self on Tuesday before the official next month.

“That’s one he kind of doesn’t know a lot about, just for the fact he’s never been out there,” Kennedy said. “But it’s Kansas, kind of like a Kentucky thing where it’s always a top program so he’s interested and he has a connection through knowing the assistant [Kurtis Townsend] for a little while.”

Gordon has always said he’ll wait until the spring to sign and that hasn’t changed.

“He’s been saying he’s not going to pick until April for a while,” Kennedy said. “I thought he might have switched it but he’s staying true to that.”

An explosive athlete who helped the Soldiers win the Peach Jam in July, Gordon has been compared to Blake Griffin and Kennedy seems some validity to the comparison.

“A lot of people say that just from an athleticism standpoint,” Kennedy said. “I don’t think he’s as explosive, but I think he shoots it a little better. I think he can handle it a little bit better, too, and pass it a little better. We play him at the point at times and he’s one of our best passers.

“I think he’s a little bit more versatile than Blake is right now.”

Kazemi averaged 12.4 points and 10.3 rebounds last season at Rice and reportedly also considered Kentucky, Florida, Cincinnati, Texas and Ohio State.

His transfer was first reported by the Eugene (Ore.) Register-Guard.

Kazemi, the first native of Iran to play Division 1 college basketball, will reportedly seek a waiver to play immediately. He joins 6-11 former junior college big man Waverly Austin, who wasn’t academically eligible at South Florida.

Tyrell Robinson is a 6-4 small forward who also plays outside linebacker, while the 6-4 Tyree is a shooting guard who also plays safety.

Tony Woods, the dismissed Wake Forest center, will arrive at Oregon in early August for summer school and will be immediately eligible to play in the 2011-12 season.

“He really liked his visits, the people and the team,” Norm Parker, Woods’ AAU coach with the Georgia Stars, said by phone. “He felt like a fresh start worked out good for him. He feels like he can go out and contribute right away and help that team.”

Woods averaged 4.6 points and 3.2 rebounds as a sophomore at Wake.

The 6-foot-11 Woods was dismissed from Wake Forest last October after a domestic violence incident in which he kicked and pushed his girlfriend, Courtney Lorel Barbour, in front of their 8-month-old child.

According to ESPN.com, Woods reached a plea agreement on a misdemeanor charge of assault of a female, was given a 60-day suspended sentence and had to complete 100 hours of community service as well as anger management classes. He has one anger management class remaining for when he arrives at Oregon.

“He had to finish school — 18 hours — plus the two other classes this summer before doing anger management class,” Parker said.

Woods took an unofficial to Kentucky and an official to Texas, and also considered Louisville, Auburn, Cincinnati, Xavier and Texas Tech.

Because Oregon is on a quarterly system, school does not begin until September, giving him time to complete his academic requirements

“A lot of schools would not be able to get him playing on the team until December,” Parker said. “That really upset and bothered him a lot.

“As we searched for schools we found that Oregon starts in late September. He finishes up his A-A degree in late July. He can be out at Oregon in August and start summer school and start school in late September, and be on the team and not miss any time and that was important to him.”

Stoudemire is tutoring some of the top big men in the nation, including Brandon Ashley, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward who will attend Findlay (Nev.) Prep next season.

“We’re doing a lot of cool stuff,” Ashley, the No. 5 power forward in the Class of 2012 per Rivals, said Saturday by phone. “A lot of stuff on post moves and everything. He’s teaching us how to get through the pick-and-roll and how to defend it. A lot of simple stuff that’s going to take us a long way.”

Ashley, who runs with the powerful Drew Gooden Soldiers AAU program, is being courted by a Who’s Who of big-time colleges and says he plans to cut his list to five “as soon as I get back home.”

Asked who was recruiting him the hardest, he said, “Two schools close to home have been showing me the most love and recruiting me the hardest, and that would be Oregon and Arizona.”

Nick Johnson and Josiah Turner, two of Ashley’s former Soldiers teammates, are incoming freshman at Arizona, while another former teammate, Jabari Brown, will suit up for the Ducks.

“I’ve played with dudes all over the country,” Ashley said. “I can’t really say that them being there will affect my decision at all.”

Ashley said he made the move from Bishop O’Dowd in the San Francisco Bay Area to Findlay Prep, the national power, in order to “get ready for college.”

“Going to Findlay I’ll be playing top competition year round,” he said. “I’ll be challenged year round. Working out through practices with Anthony Bennett,Winston Shepard and Landen Lucas, I’ll just be playing good players year round and going harder.”

“Devoe to Oregon,” Ro Russell, Joseph’s AAU coach with Grassroots Canada, said by text.

“We have nothing but respect for coach [Tubby] Smith and the people at Minnesota. This is a Pac-10 style of play program that needs experience and immediate help. It also has a quarter system where he can play starting in early December versus late December like with a semester school.”

Joseph must sit out a season and will become eligible in December.

The 6-foot-3 junior averaged 11.2 points in eight games at Minnesota after sitting out the first six games because of a violation of team rules.

Joseph appeared in 76 career games for Minnesota, making 25 starts and averaging 7.7 points, 2.4 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 21.6 minutes.

Smith said in a statement Wednesday he was “disappointed” Joseph decided to leave the program.

Joseph is the older brother of Texas freshman guard Cory Joseph and the cousin of Syracuse junior forward Kris Joseph.

The news was first reported by ESPN.com.
