Alex Murphy, the No. 1 small forward in the Class of 2012, has verbally pledged to Duke.

“Alex obviously thinks that Duke is the best place for him to reach his dreams and goals in basketball on the court and off the court,” his father, Jay, said by phone.

The 6-foot-8 Murphy out of St Mark’s (Mass.) chose Duke over Florida, Boston College, West Virginia, Kansas and North Carolina. He is the Blue Devils’ first 2012 commit.

He visited Duke last month for the Maryland game and has also played AAU events at Cameron.

“I think he’s a versatile player and he’s a got a lot of things to work on,” his father said. “He’s excited to play for Coach K and the Duke program.”

Murphy could potentially attend college in 2011 instead of 2012, but has not decided to do so as of yet.

Murphy tweeted Monday that he received a text from Duke guard Nolan Smith with a picture of his 2o1o National Championship ring and the words,”Come get one bro!”

The news was first reported by Scout.com.
