Jared Nickens to Maryland

Jared Nickens didn’t need to take all of his official visits after all.

The 6-foot-6 2014 wing from Westtown (Pa.) High verbally committed to Maryland Saturday night on his official visit.

“I loved everything about it,” Nickens told SNY.tv. “When I first stepped on campus I felt this positive vibe, I love the campus, I like the [Washington] D.C. and College Park area around the campus. The atmosphere was great, the fan base is great.

“I really like the Coach [Mark] Turgeon and his honesty with his players, he’s a players’ coach, and is great with individual development, he looks out for his players. He knows what he’s talking about.

“I also like the rest of the coaching staff. We all get along great, I got along great with the players as well. I felt like I knew them all my life, they were really cool and fun to be around.

“I feel like I will fit in great and the type of skill set I will bring to Maryland is just being able to get the ball in the basket, but of course I want to contribute however I can. I’ll do whatever coach Turgeon asks because I know he has not only myself but the players interest in hand, also just the whole teams best interest in hand.”

Nickens had already visited Oregon State and was planning on visiting Wake Forest (June 21-23) and Dayton (June 28-30).

“Jared is a deadly shooter from the perimeter,” Brian Coleman, Nickens’ coach with the Sports U AAU program, told SNY.tv. “He’s also going to surprise people with his ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the rack. He’ developed a nice pull up game off one and two dribbles. The biggest asset Jared brings to Maryland is his character. He’s a great kid, great teammate, and very coachable. Coach Turgeon got a good one in Jared Nickens.”

Nickens joins 6-3 point guard Romelo Trimble of Arlington (VA) Bishop O’Connell and 6-3 shooting guard Dion Wiley of Oxon Hill (MD) Potomac in the 2014 recruiting class that will begin play in the Big Ten.
