Maryland to the Big Ten, Rutgers To Follow Tuesday (UPDATED)

By MATT SUGAM & ADAM ZAGORIA

Goodbye, ACC, and goodbye, Big East.

Maryland and Rutgers are headed to the Big Ten in 2014.

Maryland’s Board of Regents voted  unanimously to leave the ACC and go to the Big Ten.

“Today is a watershed moment for the University of Maryland,” said Maryland university president Wallace D. Loh.  “Membership in the Big Ten Conference is in the strategic interest of the University of Maryland.  It will not only ensure the financial vitality of Maryland Athletics for decades to come, but the extensive opportunities in the CIC for collaborations with our peer AAU and flagship universities in education, research, and innovation will boost the University of Maryland’s ascendancy in academic excellence.”

“The Big Ten Presidents and Chancellors are pleased to welcome the University of Maryland to the Big Ten Conference,” said COP/C Chair and University of Iowa President Sally Mason.  “The University of Maryland is one of the premier public research universities in the country and represents a natural alignment with our other member institutions.  Their top-ranked academic and athletic programs will be a tremendous addition to our conference.”

Maryland still must come up with the $50 million exit fee to leave the ACC. Maryland and Florida State were the only schools to vote against the fee, but lost the vote.

“Since the (ACC’s) inception, they have been an outstanding member of our conference and we are sorry to see them exit,” ACC Commissioner John Swofford told McMurphy.

Rutgers, a member of the Big East since 1991, is expecting a Big Ten invitation today and will follow with a similar announcement on Tuesday, according to The Star-Ledger. ESPN.com first reported the news.

Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti, meantime, has the authority to accept an invitation from the Big Ten, should it come, the Ledger reported.

“Under normal circumstances, (the board of governors) would give the athletic director and the president the authority to act on their behalf,” Rutgers president Robert Barchi told the paper. “We do that with union contracts, we do that with a whole range of things.”

The Big Ten would then have 14 teams with the additions of schools from Maryland and New Jersey. The Big Ten Network would now have access to the TV markets in the Washington D.C. and New York/New Jersey areas.

Rutgers would be the ninth team since 2004 to leave the Big East. Their buyout from the Big East would be $10 million and they would have to give 27 months notice.

However, the Big East allowed West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Syracuse to leave earlier than the 27-month requirement by paying a higher exit fee. The aforementioned schools paid a fee of $20 million.

On the basketball front, the Big East, which this year has 15 basketball teams, will have 18 next year and 17 in the 2014-15 season, assuming UConn and Louisville remain in the league, which is a big if at this point.

By leaving the ACC, Maryland will no longer have league games against traditional rivals Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State, while Rutgers would no longer play Seton Hall, St. John’s, UConn and Villanova in Big East play.

Breno 4/18. 7 gtd. DRC to visit Jets tonight

Decker, Kerley and Nelson are solid, but the real killer is Hill. If he had developed into the game changer the Jets had envisioned they'd be set at WR. Just add two TE's and an elusive squirt at RB and you're ready to go. This underscores just how much a blown draft pick in Rounds 1-3 can kill you, especially when you only have 4 picks.

Idzik is slowly remolding this team, but it'll take time / 2-3 drafts.

Decker is a good POSSESSION receiver as well as a red zone threat at 6 foot 3. The Jets need to add an EXPLOSIVE receiver which is why they should try and draft  Marques Lee who can be that guy. James Jones or Sanders (preferably Jones) would be a great addition also

They will pick at least 2 WR's in the draft. Not sure which rounds but 2 is  my bet.

I like Ebron but us going after pettigrew makes me feel we might not draft him. I think he'll drop to 18 seems the hype has settled

So if we sign sanders were not drafting a wr right?

I cannot believeso many peoplehave been drivento fill our holes. Let's see we have at least 10 draft picks only need a starting Cornerrback, starting left guard, outside linebacker, running back for third downs who can be on special teams, a number 1 receiver, a tight end, and a safety. I hope he is as good as the draftas he has been projected to be. Day 4 of free agency and no 1 is home. This is shameful

What the Jets should do is sign Henry Melton, Colon, Cro and James Jones

Draft 1st TE Ebron 2nd WR Donte Moncrief 3rd CB Marcus Roberson

Kirk Michael
Kirk Michael

There saying Tates there last piece at wr so they don't need one, and can prob use the extra picks n Evans would be a great #1 for yrs

i am frustrated..could have signed a safety at least..after hearing that revis wanted to come back and the management didnt even attempt to try drives me crazzyy...idzick thinks he is going to build the seahawks in NY lol smh....i believe parcells said this, there are players and then there are "planet people." Only 1 or 2 guys out there that have that rare special talent..Revis was and probably will return to that this year..if he wanted to come back you could have at least tried to negotiate !! better sign bak cromartie and sign freakin sanders and then draft either 1st round reciever, safety, or linebacker. ok im done venting now

Confirmed on DRC? Or just hype?

What was Sanders scheduling conflict? He's going to SF to visit instead....

As deep as this draft class is at WR I would be surprised if the Jets don't take at least 2 WRs.

Pat d
Pat d

If we sign Sanders we better draft a WR. The Jets will still need a WR that can get seperation.

machoking

@lagoo I think we still might... we need something that could be a promising wildcard. If we draft a stud (hopefully) then when either Sanders or Decker get dumped, you're not left empty.

LOL. they have 12 draft picks, give or take

The draft doesn't work that way

I'd rather draft Allen Robinson in the second with ebron in the first

Why the rush to sign Cro. He's not that good. Revis wanted a one year deal, pass.

@fortysyxx  so your hot as hell girlfriend, who you were dating for a few years, who drove you crazy most of the time with her demands for a better life, better gifts, better (i.e. more expensive) things. Finally you find out that there is someone else willing to take her on, so you gladly end your relationship and move on. a year later the new guy realizes what a mistake they made and let your ex go. she calls you up saying she wants another shot, so the question is do you go back to her because you have no self respect, or do you remember all the issues you had in the past and decide to pass, because although still hot as hell, shes just not a good fit for YOU?

the point is since the jets were in teh best position to evaluate him (seeing as how he was theirs the 1st 6 years of his career) and judging by the 54 million they paid him over the 1st 6 years, which included at least 2 contract hold outs (including one before he ever played a snap), and was probably heading to a 3rd, its pretty safe to say that the reason we didnt engage revis in a contract negotiation was simply because woody didnt want to go there.

this is starting to feel like kids and their parents. fans are kids and management is parents. im sure everyone here had issues w/ something a parent or guardian didnt let you do when you were younger, only to realize how right they were when you got older.

believe me no one wants revis more than i do, and there is no better fit for our system/team/coach, but the prevailing issues may be too much for us to handle, and too much for us as fans to logically comprehend.

greggreen

@fortysyxx  you really want to go through the whole "we might lose revis " saga again. the guys wanted a 1 year deal so he can make sure he beats shermans next contract. Hes obsessed with his ego being justified by his salary

Brendan
Brendan

@fortysyxx  I think safety is one spot you shouldn't expect much from. They already have Landry/Allen/Bush/Jarrett/Miles under contract and might bring Reed back. I think that's fine, as long as they lock down the open CB spot.

Bent

@Brendan @fortysyxx  That's what I was hoping but this morning KMart said the Jets "have quite a few needs, but I'm told they're "definitely in the safety market"

fortysyxx

@Brendan @fortysyxx  I like Reed but he probably has only a yr or 2 left in him..He looked ok last year for the brief time we had him but we need someone younger...the other safetys im not sold on yet..i would of luved signing Byrd.

kniff

@Brendan @fortysyxx  I think when we lost out on Verner, we could have done one year splurge on Revis for 12 mill...

But that's just me....

Same here. The best recruiting tactic, is being championship timber.....

They are both good but Jones is bigger and more physical and scores more TD's

machoking

@Pat d I'd still like some depth if we could.  If James Jones is the right price, he would come in and be our top guy... give time for a rookie to develop.  however, i wouldn't be upset if we went RB (MJD) and just pound it with he and Ivory.

Pat d
Pat d

The Jets will be able to draft a WR that is better than all the WR FAs

machoking

@kniff @Bent@Brendan@fortysyxxIs it frugality or intelligent? If we are able to sign all of our studs in the next few years, Potentially draft a young stud WR, with a solid veteran along side of him.... is that not something you want to sing on for ? We had a ton of money in Revis and couldn't sack the QB.. i think Idzik is building a team, that can compete year in and out. non of these heavy spending teams is around in the playoffs...

kniff

@Bent @Brendan @fortysyxx  Bent, We could have splurged on Byrd, knowing we wanted to have nothing to do with Revis, and then reverted back to our new found frugality, no?

TK, we're not going to trot Milliner and Walls out there as the starting CB's with AA and Landry at safety.

Agree with this 100%. Woody is not in there telling them what guy to target, or draft. But as owner, he sure as hell can tell them whom he does NOT want to do business with.

You realize the Pats lost a CB and got a one year replacement.

@Disgruntled Jets Fan @jma020@Brendan@kniff we don't want Revis nor should we.  He does not = a ring.  However, he is guaranteed to complain about his money.  He will do exactly that next year.  This is a desperate patriots move.  They have many holes, that having Revis will not allow them to fill.

phily kay
phily kay

@jma020 @Disgruntled Jets Fan  another rumor/story/fact thats making the rounds is that revis camp put out there that they wanna return to ny knowing it would never happen simply to get the fan base riled up. probably a bit of payback for "idzik lying" to get the fans to mad at idzik.

seems like it worked like a charm if its true

phily kay
phily kay

@jma020 @Disgruntled Jets Fan  who said that the jets didnt internally explore this option, and concluded it wasnt in their best interest? just because manish didnt have the scoop it is now assumed that nothing was done? organizations like new england and pittsburgh have historically not been leaky, and you didnt know what was going on internally. i think we got so used to "sources" handing over every piece of info 5 seconds after its been discussed (like sittin in a meeting and emailing a reporter updates). were in a new era. we now think before we act. yes, that is boring, but effective.

I can name 48 super bowl champions that won without revis. can you name 1 that won with him?

jma020
jma020

@Disgruntled Jets Fan @jma020  Well common sense tells me that football players prefer long term deals rather than short term ones in general.  In addition to that, there have been reports that Revis just went to Pats after finding out the Jets weren't interested.

I'm not sure that is the case, but if it is I'd be dissappointed for not even negotiating.

Disgruntled Jets Fan
Disgruntled Jets Fan

@jma020 @Disgruntled Jets Fan  Do you have first hand knowledge that Idzik was unaware of Revis's acceptable deal parameters?   There's no evidence on which we could speculate that Revis was ever at all amenable to a longer deal.

jma020
jma020

@Disgruntled Jets Fan  I'm not saying I wish we signed Revis to a 1 year deal.  I'm just saying that if Idzik and Woody were too butthurt over last year's negotiation to even explore the possibility, then I'm disappointed in the front office.  I don't think it's an unreasonable stance at all.  Especially from an organization which prides itself on "leaving no stone unturned".

Disgruntled Jets Fan
Disgruntled Jets Fan

@fortysyxx @Disgruntled Jets Fan @jma020 @Brendan @kniff  He signed a ONE YEAR deal.  That guarantees it happens again.  Without the ability to trade.

lageman
lageman

@jma020 @Brendanlet's move on from Revis.  He's a mercenary and team will be fine without him.

fortysyxx
fortysyxx

@jma020 @Brendan  he technically did though lol revis wanted to know if he was being traded and idzick didnt really answer the question...the writing was on the wall but still...i wouldnt have been happy about being traded to the buccs if i was him either...regardless like i said before...guy still wanted to play for you...do some due diligence and try to see what you can work out...if they could have locked him in for a 3 yr deal i would of been cool with that..if it didnt work out I would of been fine with that

Brendan
Brendan

@jma020 I very much disagree with that, jma. They lied, flat-out lied about people still with the organization, and Revis called Idzik a liar. No way should they have to swallow pride and put up with stuff like that if they don't want to.

kniff
kniff

@Brendan @kniff  Gotchya bro, maybe Cro can prove he's healed and can have an exceptional year with us...pull a late Pace type deal....

fortysyxx
fortysyxx

@Brendan @kniff  I understand Woody is mostly the problem but from a larger prospective he now went to your biggest rival!! makes no sense..bite the bullet..make amends or at least try..even the way they are handling cromartie angers me

jma020
jma020

@Brendan @kniff  I don't buy that we have to respect that.  GM/Owner has to put aside any kind of personal gripe to do what's best for the team.  If they didn't even explore it, that's disappointing.

Brendan
Brendan

@kniff They didn't lose Verner, they lost Davis. They apparently weren't in on Verner, but were in on Davis until the bitter end.

The team has no desire to ever do business with Team Revis again, we as fans just have to respect that. We weren't the ones being trashed publicly, so I don't think we can assume that POV.
