LaQuinton Ross Cleared at Ohio State

Ohio State freshman LaQuinton Ross has been cleared to play for the Buckeyes.

“Laquinton Ross @qross2011 is officially a Buckeye!!!!,” assistant coach Jeff Boals tweeted.

The 6-foot-8 Ross did well on his recent SAT and his former high school coach, Wilson Arroyo of Burlington Life Center, confirmed the good news Thursday.

Arroyo said he believes Ross will becomes eligible Dec. 10 after the semester ends.

Ohio State visits Kansas Dec. 10.

“Just got the news that he has been cleared to play and join his teammates,” Arroyo said by text.

In September, Ross was declared ineligible while the NCAA looked into his grades from his ninth and 10th grade years at Jackson (Miss.) Murrah High School, Arroyo said. Since then, he has been at home working out and taking courses online.

This was definitely not one of Reese's better drafts. He does not know how to use value to his advantage. Which I'm guessing is why he very rarely ever moves up or down in a draft. He went safe, yes he reached but these were safe picks. Like the signings of Grimble and Quarles as Undrafted FA's. Just need Quarles to get his head on straight. Love Nat Berhe but could've had him later in the draft.

I noticed Rutgers WR Brandon Coleman went undrafted, if I remember correctly.  I hope the Giants are thinking about bringing him in on an UDFA contract. Hopefully they can find a few other project DE's or OT's that can come in as well to push the backup linemen for jobs.

Here's the thing.  Where we know the players on the Giants roster from last season, there is going to be a new offense this year.  It is possible that based on McAdoo's offense - they are comfortable with the talent we have at Tight End.

The draft is never a panacea - and many draft picks never pan out anyway.

I can't wait till camp to see what we can do.

In light of the possibility of convincing Jermichael Finley to come in here as a free agent TE signing, I'm not surprised they didn't choose a TE in this draft. However, a TE taken somewhere between the 2nd and 4th rounds would probably have been cheaper contractually than what Finley will ultimately cost us as a free agent.

I'm mildly surprised Reese went after a LB in the 5th round, since normally he ignores the position. I thought drafting a pass rushing DE in this draft would have made sense, and when Chris Smith of Ark was still available in the 5th round, Reese ignored him to draft the Safety. Considering Reese's penchant in the past to draft DE's with potential, that was a surprising move.

So a lot of needs were filled, but the pass rush was ignored. I would like to know where the Giants think their increase in sacks from the DL will come from.

jaymanjay
jaymanjay

In a nut shell this draft was frustrating but not surprising. This draft is very similar to all the rest of Reese's draft solid picks in the first two round and then it falls off the cliff value wise.

Reese selected two potential starters and a bunch of special teams tryouts because let's face it folks if you think any these guys from round 3 onward will have a significant impact this year I'd be surprised and if they do that means a lot injuries and if that's the case look for the giants to be selecting in the top ten next year.

The giants had a lot of needs that's for sure but Reese did not resolve the most pressing needs fully enough. Taking one offensive linemen tells me that once again Reese is overvaluing the talent he has on his line believing the backups he brought in during free agency will make a difference fools gold once again. Further he seems think that Beatty will be better and I doubt it. Don't try to cover your behind for giving this guy big money and risk Eli protection once again. What about Snee? The talent on the offensive line is still very suspect.

Weapons for Eli not one Tight end? That is horrible. You also select a DT in the 3rd round you could have clearly taken in the 5th.

Reese shows again his poor draft management.

And again how do you push this whole we want character guys after signing john jerry that's aweful and shows just how full of it they are. Reese sits there talking about clean players what a joke.

Can't complain here. They did all they could to improve, addressed every need and also bolstered the special teams unit in the process. Lots of kids in there who can contribute in some form and that's what you want.

I personally love what thy did in the draft. I was initially upset about Beckham, and still think they should have pulled off a trade. However, what the heck do I know abou what moves were available?

My thoughts:

1- Beckham is as fast as Watkins and has a better vertical than Evans, so it's kind of like a combo of the two. I have yet to read a negative about his ability.

2- the giants needed a future center and they got him. I don't see anything wrong with him and now they have Schwartz, Pugh, And Richburg as anchors for another 3-5.

3 - reach? Maybe but people didn't like Hankins last year either. They though Pugh was a reach as well. But now they are both anchors. So I will just say, I hope this kid is legit because there was a lot of talent at that time.

4 - Andre was as much a guarantee as anyone to be drafted by the giants. I personally love it and they need a bruiser in case Jennings is a bust.

5 - I wanted Lynch here but if they sign

Finley, as I expect they will, then grabbing a safety and LB for depth and ST is fine by me.

6 - See above.

I do this all the time after the draft. I go through and pick what I would have taken with the 1st pick of each round and no 1st rounder. So here it is:

2nd Round, Pick 1 - Jordan Matthews

3rd Round, Pick 2 - Marcus Martin

4th Round, Pick 3 - KaDeem Carey

5th Round, Pick 4 - Arthur Lynch

I don't know who I would take with the rest of the picks but that's my top 4 with no 1st rounder.

amiright
amiright

1st Round B ( wish he was bigger)

2nd Round A- ( filled a huge hole and got the best C in the draft)

3rd Round C- (have to agree w the whiners, its a reach)

4th Round A (stud and perfect timing)

Don't know the players well enough to voice an opinion on them but it looks like we filled more holes, and who doesn't like filling holes? Amiright?

Overall B+

All in all, a solid if unexciting draft.  But that was likely needed.  The Giants added a lot of talent in free agency and they needed to add some depth at key positions and get another receiver.  A pass rusher with some ceiling would have been nice but you can't have everything.

On that point, Donald was a beast in college and a DT who can rush the passer can put huge pressure on an offensive line if paired with 2 above average ends.  Those don't come along too often and if Donald turns into a top pass rusher, the first round pick will be a huge mistake unless Beckham is a truly elite wideout.  Let's hope that he is.

Richburg was a solid, hopefully low risk, pick - the Giants needed a solid interior lineman.

Bromley - who knows?  He had a lot of sacks for a defensive tackle.  Patterson and Jenkins are on the wrong side of 30 and the Giants need another young DT after the Austin fiasco.

Williams was a solid and reasonably safe pick although his weakness as a receiver is unfortunate.  After seeing years of stone hands Jacobs and Hynoski, I've had my fill.

Kennard is an interesting pick.  He had 8 sacks against good competition.  If he can be used as an effective situational pass rusher, backup SAM and contribute to special teams, this could be a good pick for the 5th round.

The two secondary players are fliers - if they work out great, if not, it's the 5th and 6th round.

In general, I'm a big fan of the makeover Big Blue has done with the off season and the draft. The 3rd round DT, 5th round Safety and LB seem like reaches to me. I would have preferred Nix III, Exum and Zumwalt. Reese spends more time at this than I do though.... :)

I wonder if we will ever see a draft where we don't take a Cuse, ND, Wolverine, LSU, or BC player? It seems like the scouts LOVE those guys...almost to a fault.

Go Giants! Super excited to see the rebuilt offense in action. Finally an O-line.

Dave Rosenbluth
Dave Rosenbluth

On paper the choices look good.  A new offensive line was vital and between free agents and the draft they appear to have done that. If Lewan was available I wonder if they would have chosen him rather than the WR, but we will never know.

I like the C, the RB pick especially and I think the first 3 can contribute immediately.

Biggest challenge for this team is learning the new offense

@Jeff Comerford  I don't think so.  The Packers use the TE quite a bit and that is the offense the Giants will be running.  Hopefully Finley is healthy enough and choses the Giants when he gets cleared to play.

@Skookaloop

Where in the first round was he trading down to and still get to keep ODB?? You've never answered the question.. the Bears was the only logical choice to trade out with.. and if Reese did call them and they said no we had no choice but to take him at 12 .. Beckham wasn't getting past the Jets at 18 so Reese did the right thing and took him.. Bromley was a reach, no argument there... Behre was a questionable one but no way were we picking AJ McCarrron, Reid wasn't getting picked thanks to Bromley.. so 1 questionable and one bad draft pick on paper... not bad at all and we wont know how this will turn out until they play the games

@Skookaloop  Crazy.  I don't know why they even bother playing the games.  You've got it all figured out.  Pencil the Giants in for 8-8 or 6-10 and call it a year.  Saves me 50 or so hours of weekend time anyway.

Kennard may well have been targeted as a situational pass rusher.  Also, Bromley had a bunch of sacks last year.  We'll see how that translates to the pros.  There were not a ton of defensive ends with pass rushing upside and he Giants chose to go Center over Ealy in round 2.

Re TE - they chose a center over a TE, arguably a greater need.  The top 4 guys were gone by round 3.

@Peter Sinapi  ....  Why no 1st rounder?  Doesn't make a lot of sense, since we weren't deprived of a 1st round pick.

I was watching The NFL Network's coverage of the draft on Day 1.  When they went to the camera inside the Giants' War Room, it looked as though Coach Coughlin had his hand on his head, slighlty rubbing his forehead (not all the way extended to his temples w/ his hand) but definitely to the top bridge of his nose.

When I saw that body language, I thought that Coach Coughlin was disgusted/upset/stunned that the Titans had just drafted OT Taylor Lewan.  Which makes me believe that the Giants were ready to draft Lewan, and were stunned at the announcement that the Titans actually selected him.

In following the draft, most analyst that I heard commented on the Titans' pick of Lewan as being "odd" since they only had a few draft picks - 2 in the Top 100, with glaring needs at QB, CB, and RB having already signed RT - Michael Oher in free agency, and have LT Michael Roos, who according the the Titans website is "one of the premier left tackles in the league."

Not about being a leader right away. Its about character and demanding respect from your teammates, and developing into a leader in a few years.  Being a captain goes way beyond simple leadership.  Its shows you are liked, respected, intelligent, influential and willing to put in the necessary work on and off the field to succeed

Bromley seemed like a reach, but really, what is this based on?  Mel Kiper's or some other "experts" board?  We don't know what the giants board or any other teams board looked like.  Maybe other teams liked him as well.  If the Giants really like this kid, you gotta take him.  Who says he would make it back to them in a round anyway?

spider43
spider43

@manchu @Skookaloop  ....  The thing about Beckham is that we could have risked losing him by trading back to anywhere between 14 - 17, but it wouldn't have killed us to lose him. If the Giants committed to one of those draft positions, the Jets COULD have moved up in front of the Giants to steal Beckham at that point. But so what if they did??

I don't think Beckham is or was "head and shoulders" above either Jordan Matthews or Marqis Lee or Moncrief in terms of production or talent. I'm pretty sure I would have preferred to have traded back one spot with the Rams, or between 13 - 17 to have picked up an extra pick(s), which in turn would have given the Giants more options to fill more holes. We could have still ended up with a pretty darn good receiver in the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round, whichever was the next highest rated WR Reese would have had on his board. A comparable WR taken later in the draft than #12 would have still given us a very good weapon for Eli to upgrade the offense.

If we were forced to stay at #12 because no one wanted to trade up with us before the Jets spot at #18, well that's a different matter entirely. Being forced to pick Beckham there would have made some sense. I still would have preferred to pick Donald or have leveraged Donald with a team willing to trade up to get Donald from the Giants at #12. It would have been worth risking the loss of Beckham because other very good receivers were still available later. This isn't a matter of hindsight -- this draft was loaded and DEEP with WR's. We would have been fine waiting until later to draft one while collecting draft picks from anyone willing to move up. Reese himself said there were offers made to him. I would love to know what those offers were. Unfortunately, I'm sure we'll never find out.

but , we don't know for sure.....

if REESE made a Move it would have to be with,

the Rams - Bears - Steelers or Cowboys....

No reason. It's just something I do to show that you can still fill needs without a top overall pick. It's more fun after the season starts. The 2013 redraft:

1 - Larry Warford

2 - Keenan Allen

3 - Jordan Mills

4 - Zac Stacy

5 - LaAdrian Waddle

6 - Joseph Fauria

7 - Paul Worrilow

That's with the last pick in each round.
