Henderson (NV) Findlay Prep point guard Derryck Thornton has several upcoming visits and is still considering reclassifying to 2015 from 2016, his father told SNY.tv on Monday.
“We just went to Duke, we’re going to go to Cal-Berkeley, we’re going to go to Miami and we’re going to go to Louisville March 7,” Tank Thornton said. “Miami and Cal will be after the season, like in April.”
Findlay Prep plans to finish its season at the ESPN NHSI, which runs April 2-4 in New York.
As for reclassification, Tank Thornton said both Duke and Louisville had inquired about having Derryck reclass to 2015 and that he only needs one more class to make it happen.
“It’s still an option,” Tank said. “Duke asked him to reclass as well…We’re not even going to think about it that much until after the high school basketball season is over.”
Thornton has already visited Kentucky, among others. He also went to Duke for the North Carolina game which the Blue Devils won in OT, 92-90.
“It was amazing,” Tank said. “It’s a ridiculous campus. The coaches were top-notch. The students and the fans there are unbelievable.
Tank said Duke is “not sure” if freshman point guard Tyus Jones will leave early for the NBA, but wants Thornton for 2015 anyway.
“Even if [Jones] is there, I think they feel like Derryck’s ready,” Tank said. “He goes to Findlay Prep, he’s been playing at this level for a few years now. I think they just feel like he’s ready to come into college. And he’s only one class away from graduation.”
Thornton is also close with Gladstone (N.J.) Gill St. Bernard’s guard Tyus Battle, who on Monday cut his list to seven, including Duke and Louisville.
