“I just felt most comfortable with their staff and how they play,” he told SNY.tv by text.
Chatman, a 6-foot-7 left-hander from Portland (Ore.) Columbia Christian, also considered Arizona, Oregon and USC.
“We like Michigan,” Chatman’s father, Canaan Chatman, who played at Oregon State, told SNY.tv this summer. “I’ve known Coach Beilien and he’s known me since I was playing. Obviously, on the year that they had you gotta pay attention to that.
“They’re trying to lock down some national recruits and we definitely like Michigan.”
The No. 29 player in the Class of 2014 according to Rivals, Chatman is listed as a small forward but said Michigan plans to use him at the 1, 2, 3 and 4.
“Freshman year I played point guard at my school,” Chatman told SNY.tv this summer, referring to his time at Portland (Ore.) Jefferson, the school that produced NBA players Terrence Jones and Terrence Ross. “I’m not really a point guard. I’m a guy who likes to play off my teammates. I’m an unselfish guy. Whatever the coach wants me to do I could do.”
Canaan Chatman said he wanted his son at the Deron Williams/Kyrie Irving Academy over the summer instead of the Kevin Durant Wing Academy so he would work on his game.
“We don’t think he’s a point guard, he has point guard skills,” Canaan told SNY.tv.
Michigan is also recruiting guards Devin Booker and James Blackmon Jr., and small forward Donte Grantham, who is expected to announce Friday for Michigan, Clemson or Cincinnati.
