Recruiting Notebook: Abu Visits Florida; Perkins to Skip UConn Visit; Nairn Cuts to 3

There were several interesting developments on the recruiting front on Wednesday.

First, Abdul Malik Abu of Kimball (N.H.) Union visited Florida instead of UConn, his AAU coach, Tyron Boswell, said.

Abu is considering the Gators, Providence, N.C. State and UConn and has now visited the first three schools on that list.

Florida coach Billy Donovan has had success putting forwards like Joakim Noah, Udonis Haslem, David Lee, Al Horford, Corey Brewer and Chandler Parsons into the NBA, something that is not lost on Abu.

Second, Randy Perkins, the father of Huntington (W.V.) Prep point guard Josh Perkins, told that Josh won’t visit UConn prior to announcing his college decision.

“No UConn visit, Josh will announce Aug. 24,” he said.

The 6-2 Perkins is also considering Gonzaga, UCLA, Minnesota and Kentucky, with UK the only school that hasn’t offered.

Gonzaga and UCLA would appear to be the favorites.

Third, 5-10 point guard Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn out of Bel Aire (KS) Sunrise Academy cut his list to Minnesota, Indiana and Oklahoma.

He will take officials to Oklahoma Aug. 23-25, Minnesota Aug. 29-31 and Indiana Sept. 20-21.

“There’s nobody that I’ve seen and I’ve coached the last 20 years, seeing a point guard with better leadership skills that he has. He’s a pass first kind of guy. Kids love being around him, he’s positive and sets a great example by how hard he works,” MoKan Elite coach Jim Huber told

Finally, Minnesota, which this week hosted Tyus Jones and Reid Travis on an unofficial, will host Minnesota shooting guard Rashad Vaughn on an unofficial Friday. The Gophers are also hosting 2015 prime Prep big man Elijah Thomas this week, sources confirmed to
