Marial Shayok to Marquette

Blair Academy wing Marial Shayok is headed to Marquette.

The 6-foot-6 Canadian wing also considered Providence and Virginia but announced for the Golden Eagles Thursday night on Twitter.

“I’m happy to announce that I’m going to be playing for @TeamCoachBuzz at Marquette. Thanks to all family, friends and coaches@CoachMantegna”

“It was a great fit,” Shayok told SNY.tv. “It’s a great fit for development and the relationship with the staff is great. I appreciate every school that recruited me.”

As for what skillset he will bring, Shayok said, “I will bring versatility and I’m able to play multiple positions.”

Shayok visited Marquette last weekend for its Midnight Madness and is the second visitor to commit this week, following 6-6 Georgia shooting guard Ahmed Hill.

Marquette, which was picked on Wednesday to win the Big East regular-season title, also has pledges from Wisconsin shooting guard Sandy Cohen and Illinois small forward Malek Harris.

Marquette coach Buzz Williams visited Shayok at Blair last month.

“He was telling me more about the opportunity of coming to Marquette and how it could possibly make me a pro since they’ve gotten players not even in the top 100 to the NBA,” Shayok said then. “Eight I believe and that played at my position, so he was saying I could possibly be the ninth one, so that was good.”

Blair coach Joe Mantegna believes Shayok has a big upside.

“Marial will bring a versatile skillset, an ability to play multiple positions and a willingness and capability to do whatever is necessary to help his team win,” he said. “He has made a huge jump since last year and is only going to get better going forward.”

CIA Bounce coach Tony McIntyre added: “He’s an outstanding scorer. He’s a long , athletic, hard-worker with a great body and can score in a variety of ways.”

Marquette also lost small forward Jameel McKay on Thursday, when he announced via Twitter that he was transferring without ever having played a game at the school.
