John Kadlecik, Bobby Weir’s Furthur bandmate, says the legendary Grateful Dead guitarist collapsed Thursday night during a show in Port Chester, N.Y., after “accidentally” taking a sleeping pill.
“This wasn’t overpartying, btw, it was accidentally taking an ambien instead of a painkiller… the shoulder injury is real…” Kadlecik reporteldy wrote on Facebook, according to Relix.com.
As first reported by ZAGSBLOG.com, Weir, 65, collapsed onstage during the band’s ninth show in 12 nights at the Capitol Theatre. He was helped to his feet and later assisted off-stage by crew members after an incoherent performance in which he was unable to sing the lyrics to numerous songs.
After the house lights came on and some fans left, bandmate Phil Lesh told the audience Weir was dealing with the after-effects of a shoulder strain and the band then played several songs without him.
Furthur is due to play Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City tonight and the band’s official Twitter account said they were “getting ready” to play the show.
