Kyle Anderson Jr., one of the top sophomores in the nation, will play for St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley next year with Paterson Catholic set to close in June.

“He’s going to go to St. Anthony,” Kyle Anderson Sr. said. “Bob Hurley is a Hall of Fame coach. Transportation is easy because I work in Jersey City and I just think it’s the best fit for him to help him transition to the next level.”

A 6-foot-8, 215-pound North Bergen, N.J. native, Anderson has interest from Miami, Georgetown, Kentucky, La Salle, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Seton Hall.

A natural point guard, he can play virtually any position on the floor.

“He’s 6-foot-8 with skills,” Hurley said. “At the high school level, he literally could play all five positions.”

Anderson plays with the Playaz Basketball Club and has trained under his father, a former St. Peter’s College assistant coach.

“Obviously, what his father has done with him and the coaches at Paterson Catholic, they’ve laid a great foundation,” Hurley said. “He’s extremely versatile for his height. We would be excited to work with him and continue the development that he’s made so far. He’s got a chance to be a truly outstanding player.”

Anderson and the Cougars were a perfect 28-0 and ranked No. 3 nationally before losing to St. Anthony in the North Non-Public B title game at Rutgers.

Anderson will play this summer with the USA U17 team in the FIBA U17 World Championship For Men in Hamburg, Germany. That team also includes Maryland-bound junior point guard Sterling Gibbs of Seton Hall Prep and Kentucky-bound junior wing Michael Gilchrist of St. Patrick.

With Paterson Catholic set to close, several talented underclassmen will need new homes, including junior point guard Myles Mack and freshmen Kavon Stewart and Reggie Cameron.

“There’s been very few of those kids that haven’t had good transcripts,” Hurley said. “If they have good transcripts, athletes and regular students, St. Anthony has room in school for five to 10 students in each of the classes in school.

“They’re going to have to go somewhere and I hope there’s enough places that they can place everybody.”
