St. John’s Bourgault Cleared; Marshall’s Canty Ineligible

St. John’s junior college transfer Marc-Antoine Bourgault has been declared eligible and will travel to Charleston, S.C., to join the Red Storm for today’s game against Murray State in the Charleston Classic.

Bourgault has two years of eligibility remaining and will be listed as a junior on the St. John’s roster.

Bourgault (pronounced “bore-GO”) had been participating in all St. John’s practices and intrasquad scrimmages while awaiting the NCAA’s decision, but could not participate in the Red Storm’s two exhibition contests or season-opening victories over Detroit (Nov. 13, 77-74) or the College of Charleston (Nov. 15, 64-53).

“We are pleased Marco will now be able to contribute to our team’s efforts on the court,” said head coach Steve Lavin. “In addition to being an outstanding shooter, Marco is a fundamentally sound basketball player. He possesses a high basketball I.Q. and exhibits exceptional court sense. His skill set lends itself to both playmaking and shotmaking opportunities. We expect Marco to torch the nets from long range.”

Bourgault, a 6-6, 210-point swingman from Saint-Malo on the northern coast of France, averaged 10.8 points in 2011-12 for Monroe College in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Fellow JUCO transfer Orlando Sanchez still awaits an eligibility ruling from the NCAA.

MARSHALL’S CANTY INELIGIBLE

Marshall freshman guard Kareem Canty is ineligible to play and practice this season, per the AP.

Marshall says the NCAA has denied Canty’s initial eligibility, although he’ll retain his athletic scholarship and can rejoin the team after the spring semester.

The 6-foot-1 Brooklyn native had been expected to help Marshall fill the departure of Damier Pitts.

Marshall (1-1) plays the District of Columbia on Friday and South Dakota State on Saturday in the 2K Sports Classic on Long Island.

OK,  it's probably time for Austin Howard to sign his deal with the Jets.   I don't want to hear you have a better offer and I definitely don't want to hear it's from the Dolphins.

Colon is a solid fallback option.......if healthy.  That's a very big risk though.

I guess if there's any position to have up in the air, it's guard. Making me nervous though.

On that note, WTF, Austin Howard. Can we please lock that down?

He is not that good.  I would not spend on him.  Colon is a better player imo.

Solid move TE can work the seam, good hands,  Solid blocker, not overpowering.  A little long in the tooth with a history of injuries.  If healthy a solid player.

@Disgruntled Jets Fan  It's 4:35pm here.  The free agency period has been underwhelming at best so far.

He just played 16 games.  I say bring back he and Vlad along with all the young guys and see what shakes out inside.

He wants to get paid.  So we will wait and get it done if he wants to take the price we have given him.

@Disgruntled Jets Fan @WilkershakesYeah, I can walk back the "very", but he does carry more risk than the other FA guards.  Torn bicep and injury history.  I still like him as a late offseason signing if all's right with him.  Still a risk.

@harold  I would like the Colon/Vlad/young guys competition in camp. Although Vlad's development has been painfully slow he is improving every year.

@harold He did tear his bicep.  He also has an injury history.  It didn't show up until the end of the season, but still a risk.

@Disgruntled Jets Fan @harold  Really would want to see Jets bring in a legit starting FA guard like Schwartz or Asamoah, and also bring back Colon and have him and Winters compete.  Winters was awful most of the season, we can't have that again if we're going to improve on offense.

harold

I agree, I just think if we bring back Vlad and let the young guys compete.  If a player is Colon or someone who is better than Colon, that is pretty good for us both on the field and financially
