NEW YORK — Maria Sharapova, the No. 3 player in the world and 2006 US Open champion, has pulled out of the event on the eve of the tournament because of a leg injury. The 28-year-old Russian has not played since Wimbledon and posted on Facebook: “Unfortunately I will not be able to compete in this years US Open. I have done everything possible to be ready but it was just not enough time. To all my amazing fans, I will be back in the Asian swing in a few weeks and look forward to finishing the year healthy and strong.” The five-time Grand Slam winner was due to play Australian Daria Gavrilova on Monday, and could have met tournament favorite Serena Williams in the semifinals.
