Hilliard Expected to Pick 'Nova; Rider Adds Guard

Darrun Hilliard, a 6-foot-5 2011 shooting guard from Liberty (Pa.) High, is expected to announce that he will attend Villanova during a press conference at his high school Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Hilliard also considered Notre Dame, Seton Hall, Iowa, Michigan and Boston College.

Hilliard averaged 18 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists last season while leading the Hurricanes to their first appearance in the Pennsylvania Class 4A semifinals.

He would join Montrose Christian (Md.) point guard Tyrone Johnson, Long Island Lutheran shooting guard Achraf Yacoubou and Brewster (N.H.) Academy center Markus Kennedy in Jay Wright’s 2011 class.

Tommy Dempsey’s Rider team picked up a commitment Tuesday from 6-foot, 175-pound point guard Eddie Mitchell of La Salle High in the Philly Catholic League.

Mitchell chose Rider over Wagner and Niagara.

“I had some good talks with coach [Kevin] Baggett,” Mitchell told the Philly Daily News, referring to Dempsey’s associate head coach. “I liked the way he presented the program and the school. And when I talked with some of the players, they were always saying that they liked how things were done and that the coaches keep their word.”

Rider previously got a commitment from 6-7 wing Shawn Valentine of Winslow Township in N.J..

Jeff Jones, a Virginia transfer, also becomes eligible in 2011.

“All the guys like the way the offense is played,” Mitchell told the Daily News. “You know how school-ball offense can be compared to [the quicker tempo of] AAU ball. Rider likes to let their guys play. You can go up and down. It’s freelance, but in a controlled way.”
