  • Happy Birthday to Jerry Garcia, who would’ve been 66 years old Friday.

My son, James, wore a baby one-sie with Jerry’s picture and we took a photo of him outside in Jerry’s honor.

Before taking off on a much needed vacation to the Jersey Shore, my wife Jen and I saw the Deja Vu documentary, which features Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young on their 2006 Freedom of Speech Tour. If you’re any kind of a Neil Young fan, or if you’re interested in seeing the real cost of the Iraq war through the lives of soldiers and their families, we highly recommend it.

Sure, they’re a bunch of aging, early-60s hippies, but Neil is one of the most influential artists of the last century and this film shows his genius, force of personality and ability to capture historic moments through song. It also shows that, unlike many 60s and 70s bands, Young can constantly re-invent himself to surprise his audience and make them think and feel and debate.

    Bob Mulcahy is answering back.

In the wake of articles by The Star-Ledger reporting secret aspects of football Greg Schiano’s contract, Mulcahy says previous press releases — as well as a story by the Ledger itself — documented some aspects of Schiano’s contract. The Ledger reported that a secret addendum to Schiano’s contract enabled him to receive an additional $250,000 from Nelligan Sports Marketing, and also that he had a secret escape clause if the stadium renovations weren’t finished by 2009.

John Wall, the No. 1 player in the Class of 2009 according to Rivals, could announce his college choice as early as next week…or he could wait.

“If he chooses so, then very possibly next week,” Brian Clifton, Wall’s advisor, said via text message. “However, if he decides that it’ll be later, then that will be fine as well.”

He added: “(There is) no timetable. Whenever he’s ready.”

Many observers think it is now a fait accompli that the 6-foot-4 Wall will end up at Baylor

Garry Ward, the travel team coach for Abdul Gaddy, says Gaddy is still considering Memphis despite the recent news that Memphis self-reported a recruiting violation related to the Bellarmine (Wash.) Prep point guard.

“Since there’s no validity to the story, then I would say, ‘Yes, he’s still considering Memphis,'” Ward said by phone from Orlando.

Jeff Goodman of FoxSports.com broke the news that FedEx president and Tiger booster Dave Bronczek made an improper early July phone call to Oseye Gaddy, Abdul’s mother, who has been a FedEx employee based out of the Seattle area for more than a decade.

Recalling the conversation while watching her son play in a tournament in Las Vegas last week, Oseye Gaddy told FOXSports.com, “I was like, ‘Why would he want to talk to me?’ But the whole time he talked to me, he talked about my son.

“He was just talking to me a little bit about (John) Calipari and the program and then he was telling me about The FedEx Forum and how he goes to a lot of games and sits on the floor,” she added. “How Calipari is a really nice guy.”

Mike Rosario won a championship Thursday night, and Rutgers fans no doubt hope it’s the first of many.

Rosario, the 6-foot-2 McDonald’s All-American shooting guard out of Bob Hurley’s St. Anthony program, scored 19 points to lead AXA Advisors to a 103-98 victory over VP Builders in the title game of the Star-Ledger College Player Summer League.

Florida transfer Jonathan Mitchell, a Mount Vernon, N.Y. native who must sit out next season as per NCAA transfer regulations, added 15 points and 10 boards for the winners. Incoming Rutgers freshman big man Christian Morris scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, and Rutgers sophomore guard Mike Coburn, also of Mount Vernon, dished 9 assists.
