  • Great job by Alex Schwartz of Northstar Basketball getting this update on Derrick Favors of South Atlanta High. Favors told Schwartz he has eliminated Florida State from his list and is down to Georgia, Georgia Tech, Memphis and N.C. State.

The 6-foot-9 Favors did not sign in the early signing period and will now wait to sign in the spring. He has taken officials to N.C. State and the two Georgia schools, but his recent visit to Memphis was cancelled because his mother was ill.

He told Schwartz that he won’t necessarily pick one of the in-state schools.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Dominic Cheek is sitting behind the Rutgers bench for today’s St. Bonaventure-Rutgers game at the Rutgers Athletic Center.

There’s not much of a student turnout today. Maybe everyone’s home watching the Titans-Jets game?

The 6-foot-5 wing from St. Anthony in Jersey City is here on his official visit and also took in Friday night’s 69-55 victory over Robert Morris in which his former St. Anthony teammate Mike Rosario went off for a career-high 27 points.

Playing its first game since losing Anthony Mason Jr. for the season to a foot injury, St. John’s routed Howard 79-44 behind a combined 46 points from sophomores D.J. Kennedy, Paris Horne and Justin Burrell.

“I play the starting role just like I play coming off the bench, I just keep the energy up and go out and play hard,” said Horne (pictured), who finished with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting, 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. “Coach [Norm Roberts] always prepares us in case one of us gets hurt. So my mindset was basically the same, just go in , play hard, play defense and score. WIth the help of my teammate I can fill that role.”
