Seton Hall had hoped to get word on Keon Lawrence’s waiver by Friday, the last day of final exams.
Had the 6-foot-2, 175-pound junior been granted the waiver by then, he would have been permitted to suit up for tonight’s IUPUI game at the Prudential Center.
Because the NCAA is a business like any other, it will be taking time off over the holidays. According to a source, that means that Seton Hall probably won’t hear anything on the matter for at least a little while.
Lawrence, who transferred from Missouri, is seeking a hardship waiver because of family issues I detailed in this story.
“Keon is an incredible recruit for us,” Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez said. “He has a huge name in the state of New Jersey and he’s coming back home to Newark. He can play the 1 and the 2. He’s a natural scorer and really an electrifying, exciting player that the fans are just going to love. When he decided to transfer, everyone in the country wanted him, but he chose us. I think that really says something about where we’re headed as a program.”
The Pirates recently got word that 6-10 freshman Melvyn Oliver won’t be eligible this season and senior forward John Garcia is out with a knee injury, leaving the Pirates with just seven scholarship players at this point.
The Big East season begins Dec. 30 at Syracuse.
