NEW YORK –– Thirty-eight hours of inactivity did nothing to slow Rafael Nadal in his pursuit of his first U.S. Open championship.
Nadal, the No. 3 seed, moved into the semifinals — and inched closer to a potential dream final on Monday against Roger Federer — by finishing off No. 11 Fernando Gonzalez 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-0, in a match that started on Thursday night, was washed out Friday and finally concluded Saturday.
Because he was only on court for 34 minutes Saturday, Nadal will have additional time to rest before his semifinal against No. 6 Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina on Sunday.
