  • Rutgers coach Fred Hill will be in Tallahassee, Fla., Wednesday night to check out Marvell Waithe and Waithe is set to decide soon between Rutgers and Arkansas.

“He’s fixing to take visits to Arkansas this weekend (Oct. 9) and Rutgers next weekend (Oct. 16),” Tallahassee Community College coach Eddie Barnes said by phone.  “He has narrowed it down to those schools.”

Rutgers is hosting its “Tip-Off to Kick-Off” event at 6:15 Oct. 16 prior to the football game between the Scarlet Knights and Pittsburgh that will be shown on ESPN.

Waithe will have two years of eligibility wherever he ends up.

A 6-foot-8 combo forward out of Toronto Laurier Collegiate Institute, Waithe initially committed to Loyola Chicago in 2006, choosing that school over several others, including Rutgers.

So much for Eddy being ready.

    Eddy Curry, that is.

The Knicks big man won’t be ready for the season opener Oct. 28 and looks like he could be done for a while.

“He’s not ready to go out there and play at an NBA speed,” Knicks President Donnie Walsh told beat writers today, according to Frank Isola of the Daily News. “So we’re going to take longer and get him there. Because every time he comes on the floor he pulls a muscle. We want to get him to a point where he can get out on the floor and run.

“That’s the issue. Our trainers will work with him. He missed training camp after the first day so the gap between him and the team is even farther.”

JayVaughn Pinkston and Devon Collier, two of New York City’s top players, are at a key stage in their recruitments.

The 6-foot-6 Pinkston had an in-home visit Monday night with Seton Hall head coach Bobby Gonzalez and assistants Dermon Player and Scott Adubato.

A skilled wing forward considered the top player in the Big Apple, Pinkston is considering Seton Hall, St. John’s, Villanova, Tennessee and Marquette.

Kimani Young of New Heights, Pinkston’s mentor, says Pinkston is done with his home visits and will probably attend the Red Storm Tip-Off at St. John’s Oct. 22; Villanova’s Hoops Mania Oct. 23; and Tennessee’s exhibition with North Alabama Oct. 31.

Jesse Morgan, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound shooting guard known as “The Takeover,” has picked up offers from Louisville and Rutgers and will tentatively visit Seton Hall this weekend and Louisville the next.

“[Rick] Pitino and Fred Hill were in yesterday [Monday]. They both offered yesterday,” said South Kent (Conn.) coach Kelvin Jefferson.

Morgan said he has two visits set.

“I have a visit to Seton Hall this weekend and a visit to Louisville on the 16th,” he wrote in a text.

“Seton Hall is trying to get him up on a visit this weekend. I’m trying to get the paperwork done,” Jefferson added.

Morgan said his top five schools are Seton Hall, UConn, Louisville, Rutgers and UMass. Jefferson said UConn and UMass “like him” have not officially offered.

The mother of five-star power forward Terrence Jones says she has tentatively set up a run of official and unofficial vists for her son.

Jones, a 6-8 forward out of Portland (Ore.) Jefferson, has the following visits on tap:

    Oct. 9 – Oklahoma

    Oct. 16 – Washington

    Oct. 23 – Arizona

    Oct. 28 – Kentucky for Blue/White Game

    Oct. 31 – Oregon (unofficial)

    Nov. 6 – UCLA

Linda Mashia-Jones, Terrence’s mother and a former scholarship player at Washington, says Kansas may get an unofficial but she has not heard back from the staff.

Shane Southwell has known for some time where he wanted to play his college ball.

    Now it’s official.

The 6-foot-7, 205-pound guard out of Manhattan Rice has committed to Kansas State.

“I’m committing to Kansas State University,” he said Monday. “I actually made it Friday but I probably knew that I was going to this school since early September.”

Marquette and Providence showed some interest early, but K-State and head coach Frank Martin have been his biggest fans.

“I went there last weekend [Sept. 25-26],” Southwell said. “The whole campus is beautiful. The teammates were great, the coaching staff was great. The fans were crazy. They love their basketball and their football.”
